My husband and I decided to give wine tasting a break and opted for a Horesback ride on the Beach. We contacted Outback Trail Rides after researching other trip advisor posts. We were looking for a ride that allowed a little more independence than the traditional nose to tail rides, and they did not disappoint! Our Guide Mick And Marie were fantastic and made everyone feel at ease, regardless of your skill level. Group was small...only four riders and two guides which allowed for personal attention if desired. I was able to canter/trot independently from the group which I really enjoyed. The horses appeared well cared for and responded well to the riders commands. Helmets optional, no charge. Bring cash or check if you do the beach ride. Our location for the ride was Morro Beach, and they met us there right on the beach. No wasted time getting to/from location. I would highly recommend this activity if you enjoy riding.

I recently went to the US and really wanted to fulfill one of my 'bucket list' dreams, that being a ride along a beach, preferably with a canter included. Wow. I really managed to check that item off my list. Unlike other places that I'd looked at, mainly in the Monterey bay area, this seemed a more relaxed option where I thought I was more likely to be able to do something more than just a walk along a trail ride in single file.
It was an amazing experience. Mick, our guide, was happy for us to have a canter along the beach as long as we felt comfortable with it. I was riding on my own but there were a couple of other people who were also happy to canter along the beach so we did this together. Although we had a couple of complete beginners on the ride who were really well looked after I would suggest this for a more competent rider.
I would like to thank everyone at Outback Trail Rides for an amazing experience that I would have been happy to do all day. Although I think my body was thankful that we weren't able to do that! :-)
(By the way, you need to remember to take cash with you as they don't take cards)

We did the beach ride in Morro Bay this past weekend. What a fabulous ride!! I contacted Mick on Friday to see if he could fit us in on Saturday and he was so pleasant and helpful. What a great owner! Marie our trail guide was terrific! She was so informative and gave us all additional riding tips, especially for our one rider who had only been on a horse once. Loved being able to spread out and not ride in a single line. Riders were allowed to trot and canter if experienced enough which was a blast! My daughter and I have ridden on vacations for years but this was definitely the best ride ever! If you are in the area, don't miss out on this one. Huge kudos for Outback Trail Rides, Mick and Marie!!!

OBTR called 24 hours prior to our trail ride and cancelled because there were no available guides. We rebooked with a company in San Luis Obispo. They mentioned OBTR uses college students for guides and can at times run short of staff and cancel at the last minute. I requested a refund of my deposit when OBTR called and cancelled, and received a luke warm commitment. One week later, still no refund. Called and spoke to a guide. Called a second time and spoke to Nick, the owner. They appear to be unable to locate my deposit on their financial books. I can see their charge on my AMEX. Now two weeks later and still no refund and no progress and unreturned messages. I have disputed the charge through AMEX. Unreliable service, poor followup, unreturned messages and poor bookkeeping. Be careful if you are asked to put a deposit on your ride. I anticipate the owner will respond to this review with an excuse. Bottom line, two weeks later and no progress on the refund after they cancelled our ride at the last minute.

I was needing info from OBTR so I called and left a message , when I didn't get a call back two days later I called again. No answer, not even a machine this time. So I emailed, still no response. I gave up after two more tries on the phone. Disappointed.

This was an amazing experience. The highest level of service and professionalism. Remember to bring cash to pay your guide and bring some extra for a tip...Mick (our trail guide) was great and deserved every penny.
He was patient and a great person to chat with on the trail. He takes his time to show you the ropes and makes sure everyone is safe and having a good time.
At one point while cantering, I lost money out of my back pocket on the trail. I told him it was just a couple bucks and that it was okay but he insisted to head back down the trail himself to find it...and find it he did. Definitely an amazing host and guide.
The trail is gorgeous the horses are well cared for and treated with respect and love. Great experience!

We decided to do something a little different and booked a one hour trail ride into the coastal hills with Outback. The wranglers were all very friendly and helpful. (Well worth leaving them a nice tip at the end of the ride.) The horses were all very well trained, cooperative and easy to ride. A good time without over doing it on time and energy.

I contacted Outback Trail Rides and spoke with Mick about reserving a spot for my girlfriend and I to horseback ride on the beach in Morro Bay. He scheduled us a time without any problem. We arrived yesterday and Mick was beyond the best person possible to have taken us on this ride. It was an amazing experience, he had stories to tell and kept very great conversation with us the whole time. I will definitely be back to ride with Outback Trail Rides again hopefully soon!

We took a 90-minute horseback ride with Kristin on a beautiful April afternoon. We are all novice riders and she (and the horses) were patient with us. The best part is that the group was just the three of us!
After the ride, we walked to the tasting room on the other side of the parking lot and enjoyed a wine tasting as we set outside appreciating the view from the hill top.

We stumbled across the Outback Trail sign on Highway 1 on the way to our Cambria hotel stopover. I managed to convince my husband that it would be a great thing to do. Our two daughters are horse mad and a real "cowboy experience" was a total treat. As I say, my husband wasn't too keen, but went along with the plan for the children's sake.
We turned up to meet Mick at the appointed time, filled in the obligatory health and safety forms, met our horses, had a quick lesson in western style riding (different to english style), and off we went for an hour through the country.
We were lucky enough to have Mick to ourselves, it was late in the season (end of October) and things were starting to quiet down - lucky us!! We spent an hour trekking through the most stunning scenery, on one of the hottest days of our trip, with one of the nicest, easiest going guys around (typical laid back Aussie!).
We had great fun and the children, and the reluctant husband still talk about this as being one of the best things they did in California. The total cost for the four of us was around $200, but the horses were well looked after and we got a FULL hour in the saddle, so I feel it is well worth it.
Well done Mick, thanks for making our "mini-ranch experience" a good one. Next time we are in Cambria we will definatly be back. I would not hesitate to recommend this to friends and family.
