About
Rudy’s passionate interest in Cabernet Sauvignon lead him to discover a family connection to Eric de Rothschild, and he wrote a letter asking to do an internship at Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. Each year the Chateau had been hiring an intern from the French winemaking program at Montpellier. Thinking that two minds are better than one, Mr. Rothschild invited Rudy to work for the 1985 harvest as their first American intern. Upon completion, Rudy returned to Napa Valley in the spring of 1986 and became the enologist at Trefethen Winery and Vineyards. In 1988, he became the assistant winemaker in charge of production at Newton Vineyards in St. Helena. Shortly after their marriage in 1989, Rudy and Rita von Strasser set out looking for a vineyard property to serve as a home for their future family as well as future brand. Having already developed a deep passion and talent for producing Cabernet Sauvignon, Rudy was committed that the property must be in a microclimate blessed with the ability to grow and produce the finest red wines in Napa Valley. Coincidentally, the old Roddis Estate Winery on Diamond Mountain had just been put on the market, and in a bold move, the von Strasser label was born. From 1990 through 2016, von Strasser Winery made their mark on Napa Valley with their Diamond Mountain District Cabernets. Not only did Rudy spearhead the effort to turn Diamond Mountain District into a distinct AVA (American Viticultural Area), he assembled a core of the AVA’s best vineyards to partner with. On top of his Estate Vineyard, he has made vineyard designated wines from Sori Bricco Vineyard, Spaulding Vineyard, Post Vineyard, Agira Vineyard, Diamond Terraces Vineyard, Rainin Vineyard and Vineyard 2131. Over this period, he achieved unparalleled success as a Cabernet producer. Von Strasser Winery was named Wine and Spirits Magazine Winery of the Year for an unbelievable 13 times over this span. Starting in 2017, von Strasser is making another bold move by relocating their winery and expanding their labels. In late 2015, von Strasser Winery added Lava Vine Winery to their portfolio. Lava Vine, a small Calistoga winery, is known for its ‘alternative varietal’ portfolio of wines. The facility at Lava Vine is currently being expanded to include an ultra-modern fermentation and barrel aging building. The Lava Vine brand already has a loyal following thanks to their great wines and friendly tasting room. Over the next few years, Rudy will slowly expand the Lava Vine brand to focus on Pinot Noir, Grenache, Petite Sirah and Grüner Veltliner. However do not be surprised when offered a taste of Verdehlo, Tempranillo, charbono, or old-vine Zinfandel, and many other treats. And of course, Rudy will also continue to make his world class Von Strasser label single vineyard cabernet sauvignons.

Fun spot!
Jul 2019
Got lucky one afternoon and had Brian serve us some of the most delicious wines. He was funny and helpful in educating some of us new wine drinkers. We ended up staying for 2 hours and got to meet the winemaker too. It's a little place but well worth a stop.

Lovely personalized tasting
Apr 2019 • Couples
From the outside it would be easy to miss. We had an appointment but we were the only ones there during our visit. They had a table set up for us with a little welcome sign. The little touches do make a difference. The staff were very friendly, there were 3 of them there and they all came around to talk to us. We enjoyed the tasting, we thought the wines were very good. The tasting room has plenty of tables for multiple groups so everyone is not crowded around a bar, very relaxed setting.

A great surprise!!

We stumbled (not literally:) on this quaint, laid back winery en route to Calistoga. We had a fantastic tasting of delicious wines with charcuterie outside on the terrace. The server (Chris?) was funny and attentive. We had a quick tour too.

Very disappointed...
Nov 2017 • Couples
We had heard such great things, but were very disappointed. The wine was good - but host just poured the wine and walked away. No explanation or conversation. Wine is about experience - so a good host makes or breaks the tasting.

Incredible wines!

We were greeted by Kerry and had the most wonderful time! She was a very gracious host and shared a lot of information about the wines, the vineyards and the history of Rudy and Rita. The wines were fantastic! The Calistoga Chamber suggested that we stop here because the Cabernets were 'insane'! We were not disappointed! Rudy and his dog, Huckleberry, came by for a quick visit with us....so personable! We will definitely go back!

Super chill winery with lovely outdoor space

We were staying in Calistoga and wandered into Lava Vine on a bike ride. So glad we stopped! The tasting room was spacious and light-filled, and Amy (our pourer) was knowledgeable and gracious. Tastings were $25 with generous pours. It was a gorgeous warm Fall day, so we took our wine out to their patio and sat in their super-comfy sofas and enjoyed the sunshine. Amy brought the tastings out to us, and we had a super enjoyable hour relaxing, talking and tasting. this was one of my favorite experiences because we were not rushed, and Amy served us as a sommelier would. It's a great afternoon visit to an off-the-beaten-trail winery. Highly recommend.

Awesome place to come to the wine was the best the people here really care about you whatever you do make sure you have a good company to take you here don't drive and get a ticket and also don't use a company call "Timeless Wine Tours" they suck. I'll say no more about them but I will tell you if you want a down-home good place to visit and good wines and music you found it here

Excellent Wine, Super-Nice Staff, Congenial Wine-Tasting Room
Jul 2017 • Friends
We stopped for wine tastings at several Napa Valley wineries yesterday. The stop at Von Strasser was far and away the most pleasant. We had visited Von Strasser in the past, at its former location up the mountain from its current Calistoga location, and had liked it very much. They're one of the few wineries in the region that makes Grüner Veltliner, one of our favorite white wines, especially in the summer.

I'm so glad we included Von Strasser in our stops yesterday. Amy DeTrinidade, the staff member who poured wine for us, could not have been nicer. We appreciated that she poured a glass of the Grüner for one of the four of us who had decided he'd sit out this wine tasting, after having had several glasses of wine previously. She was very hospitable, made us feel very welcome, and was solicitous and courteous, telling us she had waited to pour the next sample until we had finished a conversation.

The surroundings are also pleasant and homey, without the hustle and bustle (and, let's face it, pretension) of more established larger wineries. The wine tasting is held in a rustic room with dark wood walls that make you feel you're in a cozy Stube or Kneipe or Lokal in Germany. The small tables interspersed around the room also enhance the cozy atmosphere.

The wine is also wonderful — the Grüner above all. The cost of a wine tasting is not daunting, too, in comparison with the price charged at more pretentious wineries. Amy's pours were also generous, and we appreciated that she offered us a top-end red blend that was not on the list of wines for the tasting set we had chosen.

All in all, a first-rate experience at a place offering some first-rate wines.
