PENCE
About
We are a small, artisinal winery specializing in Chardonnay, Rose, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Gamay. We farm organically & produce wines and will be making bread from our own Italian rye. Our winemaker and breadmaker is Sashi Moorman, and we are planting olive trees, stone fruit trees and more. We have chickens and livestock that feed the ranch workers who live on the property.

Felt incredibly disrespected. Absolute worst service of my life. Wouldn’t recommend to my worst enemy.

Stopped here for a private tasting. The wines were unexpectedly good. If you didn’t know, you woul not expect wineries in this area. It turns out to have a very good micro climate that produces very nice wines. Pence (not to be confused with a VP) offers a nice selection including an excellent Pinot.

Our Stagecoach wine tour arrived at Pence @3 on a Saturday and presumably Pence was expecting us since each winery visit we made had been scheduled in advance. However, at Pence, we had to wait in the parking lot for 20 minutes. While there, we considered using the portable toilets (but didn't) which were disgusting, and we watched another van tour arrive and be escorted directly to a wine tasting. Once seated in an outdoor area, we waiting some more while nothing happened. Eventually, a sommelier showed up and poured us a taste of wine but mainly he entertained another tasting group (maybe the ones who had been welcomed?). We waited a long long time between pours and he obviously wasn't interested in being in that place and time. The wines were expensive so it wasn't apparent why they couldn't afford better facilities.

An ATV ride through the vineyard shows off the landscape. Then, enjoy a private tasting with the excellent Pence staff. Burgundian wine lovers (Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay) this is your spot. Not overly oaked, some fruit without any loss of structure in the pinots. The Unum and Fugio (Estate grown Pinot Noir) show off the winemaker's talent for creating two drastically different expressions of Pinot from such a small parcel of land. Cozy, yet classy ranch vibe. I brought my parents who are new to wine (midwestern folks, visiting) and they loved it as well.

My wife and I love wine. We’ve tasted in close to one hundred wineries, and this was one of the best and most memorable. In search of great chardonnays, we picked 5 different wineries to visit. When we arrived, we were asked if we had a reservation, which evidently was something they just started doing. We didn’t, but he took the time to make us fee as if we did.

My wife is pregnant, so I was the primary taster. When we told him, he gave her carbonated rose grape juice - a nice touch. He took the time with every pour to explain vineyard location, which are all estate with the exception of Syrah. That’s changing very soon. I loved this because I geek out a little about terroir, the wine marking process, etc.

After the tasting, he took us (my wife, 6 year old, and me) on a vineyard tour in their Gator. The property is beautiful, and he shared with us the history of their property. My daughter loved their dogs, which they use to herd their cattle, since it’s also a functioning ranch.

Their wine was amazing, and since buying a lot would’ve been tough to get home, we joined their wine club. Don’t skip this place. They make you feel like family, and their wines are fabulous.

Made an appointment for a tour and tasting at Pence Ranch. It was a fabulous experience. Claire was our host and greeted us right away. She was extremely knowledgeable and a lot of fun. She even took us on an ATV tour of the property. We loved all the wines we tasted, bought several bottles including a bottle of their rose to drink with our picnic lunch. Clair was very accommodating, brought us out a table cloth, water and fresh glasses for our wine. I just love these small wineries, especially ones as charming as this! Joined their wine club. Can't wait to go back and be a part of this fabulous winery.

First time at Pence and it was charming and memorable! Phillip was our host and was incredibly knowledgeable and personable. We were also introduced to several of the other staff and felt so welcomed. The wine was wonderful and we regret not getting more to take back to New Orleans with us, but just gives us another reason to come back and visit!

I've been to dozens of wineries in different regions but never found one quite like this. The wines already have a worldwide reputation even though it's new, but it utterly lacks the commercialism of every other significant winery I've ever visited. It's a 200 acre property and vineyard (our Stagecoach tour guide took us on a drive tour of the property) but the production facility is in town a few miles away. They don't welcome the public for tasting, appointment only. The staff is young but well informed and our server, Kace, was astonishing in his knowledge of food and wine pairing. Pinot and Chardonnary were all excellent but the Syrah seemed the big winner of the day.

My wife and I discovered this newer winery last year, simply picking it our of the Wine Trail guide, knowing l like Pinot Noir and Gamay. We drove up to the tasting room and noticed no one else was there, however an employee approached our car asking if he could help us.

We found out that tastings were by appointment, but Kace obliged us and invited us in for a tasting, and we were glad he did. Pence makes very elegant, old world style Burgundian wines: Pinot, Chardonnay, and Gamay. They are very good, food friendly wines, and the wine maker clearly knows what they are doing.

Kace then took us on a tour of the winery grounds, which includes acres of vineyards, a pond, outdoor theater, as well as scenic paths, construction of a Polo stadium and more.

We recently visited again for their release party, and very much enjoyed the gourmet pizzas, wines, and views. Highly recommended.

We visited with a Stagecoach tour and got a special excursion of the vineyards, which are spectacular, as well as a private wine tasting. The pinots were excellent but everybody's favorite was the "White House" chardonnay, so called because it was just served at the White House recently. The people are friendly & knowledgable, the dogs and peacocks are adorable. We're looking forward to visiting on our own sometime soon!
