Kutai NP is a beautiful and well-maintained rainforest. It is a must see! You do need a travel agent to organize the visit because it cannot be accessed by yourself. We booked a three day tour which included the entrance by boat, 2 nights in de ranger camp lodge, fresh homecooked meals, a night trekking to see tarantula, snake, caterpillar, bullet-ants etc, a morning trekking of 2 hours to see orang-oetans (and we did!!) and another 4-hour trekking to go deep into the rainforest to meet hornbill birds. All trekkings were guided by a ranger who had such good ears and showed us the rich flora and fauna of this National Park. Highly recommended!

I came here to see orangutans and it's very well advertised. But there are no orangutans here.
Most of their habitat is destroyed to create palm oil plantations.
The national park itself is not maintained, the vegetation around the trails is growing fast and it's easy to get lost.
In the stopping areas there is lot of plastic garbage. It should be banned to bring plastic inside the park and they should clean.
The ticket entrance is 5000 rupiah for locals and 150000 for foreigners. As a foreigner, I have to pay 30 times more than locals. This is not fair, especially because the flight ticket, the accommodation and food in Borneo are already expensive and part of the package that a foreigner must pay to come here.
If you want to see orangutans, you just waste your time and money in Kutai.

KNP is rich of endemic animals and old trees. Here we could see many interesting things, such as a giant Ironwood tree and canopy bridge. This park was a great place to enjoy tracking path in a tropical rain forest.

We booked through Rimba Borneo Kalimantan and I would recommend our guide, Rusdy, without hesitation. He's also a great cook. The forest is beautiful (we got to see orangs), but the Prevab camp needs improvement. Large garbage pit just by the lodge. That's the last think you would expect to see at a 'national park'. The facilities are extremely basic, which is fine, but be prepared. Take binoculars (these should have been provided) and plenty of mosquito repellent. The mosquito net was torn and served no purpose. A lantern would have helped and added to the atmosphere. Also, something to keep the mosquitoes away in addition to the repellent that we were lathering ourselves with.
I would go back there but would make sure that I have a little more 'comfort'.

After reading several, not so positive, reviews about the Kutai National Park I was a bit reticence to go there but I had a nice surprise and absolutely loved it. Here you have a chance to see orangutans in the wild. I didn't see any during my morning trek but saw 3, including a baby one, in the afternoon. The park itself is beautiful and quite, not many tourists there. The accommodation, at the rangers house, is basic but it's clean and has everything you need. I went there on a private tour so the guide cooked for me. If you are on your own, you have to buy food before going there, there's nothing there, it's totally isolated. You can use the ranger's kitchen. It was wonderful to have my breakfast looking at monkeys and water monitor lizards. I definitely recommend this place, despite being difficult to reach. It was a long journey, but totally worth every minute. The rangers and family are very nice, I felt welcomed and safe.

Together with my sons: Tito and Iqbal , we tracked the TAMAN NASIONAL KUTAI / TNK forest.
Unfortunatelly, after more than 1 hour I gave up to continue our trip. The weather was hot and I was tired to follow the steep road. The guide told me that our rest trip was about more than 1.5 hour. I had decided to be back, coz the next way was too steep.
While we were tracking, we saw a lot of big trees which we never see before. For example Pohon Ulin or Ulin tree, so tall and we looked so tiny. The adventure was amazing, we had passed the wooden bridge, fall big tree, hut and steep road . We couldn't find out the atmosphere9 like this in Java , I think.
I suggest you to wear sport custom, bring drinking water, cap, sunglasses and mosquito lotion. Coz alot of mosquitos are around you. And the most important thing is to set up your body, enough sleep so you can finish your trip.
They dont provide guide, but we can ask them as long as available. They dont have rate for guide fee, you can give about IDR 100.000 or USD 10.

Is there a need for reservation? Or can you just go there and book the trek when you get to the park?

Hi, I am looking to book a tour to see the Orangutans in Kutai National Park (for 2-4 days). I have seen a large number of operators but very few reviews for all the operators and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations.
Many thanks,
VP

Phone number for Kutai National Park is +6254827218. Alternatively you can contact +6282158088945.
Another location to see orangutan and located closer to the main airport (Sepinggan in Balikpapan) is in Samboja. You can contact Borneo Orangutan Survival via orangutan.or.id.
I hope my answer helps you.
Please feel free to ask more questions.

Hello, Could you recommend a travel agency for a tour in Kutai National Park? Or did you book directly with the park?
Best, Katja

I am considering doing a tour to see orangutans in Kutai National Park. Would someone be able to tell me a bit more about the KUTAI NATIONAL PARK, including species likely to be seen? How many orangutans are estimated to be there? Is it almost guaranteed to see orangutans and proboscis monkeys? Is it worthy to go there? What about the facilities? How can I reach the place? Is there any tour or guide that you can recommend? So far, I have only been able to find tours with De'gigant Tours. I am a female traveling alone, would it be safe? Thank you very much, any information would be very much appreciated.

Kutai National Park is a great place to find a variety of wildlife, insects, birds etc... (I still remember that enormous tarantula we saw in the jungle). My mother and I decided to go for a tour with a guide who drove us from Balikpapan all the way up to the forest. The tour included many walks around the jungle where we saw orangutans (a mother with her two daughters - but unfortunately no male) and lots of different wildlife. One morning we woke up and saw a huge varan waiting for breakfast down the stairs. The one thing that I would be wary off are the facilities - they were extremely dirty; I am also a female who is used to travel alone but at that time I was glad to have someone else and the guide with us. The rangers are supposed to look after the facilities but I don't think they do so.
The surroundings are beautiful though, and you can access the camp only through a river. We stayed there for two days and two nights. If you are traveling alone you can organise access to the camp site in the main town (a couple of Km away). Once at the camp, you would meet with the rangers and one them would be coming with you, as we cannot walk around on our own, but also to help you find the orangutans as they follow them and usually know where they are. I really enjoyed being in such a remote place but I would bring my own mosquito net, mat, sleeping bag and pillow, plate and cutlery next time, and use the garden hose as a shower rather than the shower itself. Camping style!
