My husband had a day birding with Simon organised by our daughter as a birthday treat. What a fantastic day he had. Morning highlights included a number of waders on the Barbate Estuary, and a large flock of Audouin’s gulls on the salt flats. A lovely picnic lunch was enjoyed in the forest surrounded by Black Redstarts. The afternoon started with excellent views of feeding Northern Bald Ibis. They then went to the roosting site of Griffon Vultures. An amazing spectacle as they watched them being bombarded by a young Bonelli’s Eagle and joined by two Ruppell’s Vultures. This was all interspersed with numerous other species.
Altogether a fantastic day with such a friendly, knowledgeable guide. Thank you Simon.

A full day (11hrs) out to see some of the birds that can be hard to connect with. The local knowledge and years of experience in the area paid off big time for us. Very good value and you also know that not only are you supporting a small local business you are also helping fund and support some great wildlife conservation in the area. Inglorious Bustards also have a great commitment to green tourism and are a rare example of where this is 'baked in' to all they do. They are also great company and supply some fine local food and wine.

Highlights of the day were little swift, rufous bushchat, gull billed tern, slender billed gulls and many more.

Nicky and Simon live in the Straits of Gibraltar so have excellent knowledge of the local wildlife and flora. They have a number of regular trips throughout the year but they are also happy to organise bespoke itineraries. They have access to sites not available to the public so during your trips you may get the chance to visit and see something very special. They always do their best to accommodate their client’s needs and requests whether you are a birdwatcher or photographer. They can even help get you out on a boat to see dolphins and whales in the Straits. Their lunches are legendary and they have their own modern, air-conditioned minibus to take clients to the sites. They work in close collaboration with Spanish wildlife conservation organisations and also with Huerta Grande, an eco lodge on the Straits providing accommodation in wooden cabins in the beautiful cork oak forest.

Our holiday at Huerta Grande was only 6 nights, and so the expertise of moth man Dave Grundy packing in so many traps in various natural habitats really paid dividends with well over 200 species being seen, expertly identified by Dave and available for photos to be taken. Dave’s Spanish moth knowledge is legendary and besides that he has great knowledge of the Andulucia area and is good company.

Likewise Simon’s knowledge of where to find birds really meant we made the most of our time out and about. Everything had been arranged really well with special evening meals for our group of 9 at Huerta Grande. And each day we could look forward to a buffet style picnic lunch featuring wonderful cheeses and other fresh Spanish delights.

Niki was only with us for the first couple of days, but it was great to meet her and admire her Swift tattoos. Really special and a mark of dedication to the local wildlife.

Gambia tour, Dec 2019: Niki and Simon are excellent knowledgeable guides and they chose good locations to stay with wildlife on the doorstep, good food and plenty of beer ;-) Tijan was our superb local guide. We saw well over 270 bird species, plus butterflies and dragonflies, plus a 3m Rock Python, Hippos, Baboons and monkeys, but the best was up close to free-living Chimps on an island in the Gambia River. Although this is a rehabilitation programme the chimps fend for themselves on the islands and have segregated themselves into troupes and form a sustainable population. We saw them from a boat at about 10m when a few had come down to the trees on the riverside. Having waxed lyrical on the chimps, i could have said so much more on the other aspects, vultures coming to a carcass, river cruises with crocs and Finfoots, forest walks, beach walks etc.

Just go if you can. Everything is done to make your birding dreams come true. Variety, colloquial knowledge, scientific knowledge... Niki and Simon are your guides. Beautiful part of the world, with coffee stops, delicious picnics, all show casing the wonderful food of the area. Feels right to support the locals and give something back and these guys make sure you do that. True eco tourism where it’s a win win all round.

I visited twice last year in spring and autumn migration. We saw some great birds and Simon and Niki were so knowledgable and easy to talk to. Even when the weather was bad for migration they treated us to some great birds and a superb locally sourced lunch.

We came across this company at Birdfair 2019. We met up with Nicky and Simon at the border with Gib- they're both resident and based in Spain. Two former RSPB wardens they're well used to dealing with the public and were really considerate both to our capabilities and knowledge. Neither of us are great birders, but we didn't miss so much as a sparrow- they were happy to point out the distinguishing features of every creature we saw from the rare to the dramatic, without a hint of being patronising. We were lucky enough to be in Gib for the great migration of Griffon vultures and we saw over 2,000 mixed in with the occasional lost African species (Ruppells), White Storks and even a Black Stork. We were in Gib for my 60th and Nicky (I hope I'm spelling her name right) laid on a rather nice bottle of Cava to mark the occasion- the picnic provided was lavish with plenty of other wine. It really was like going out for the day with two, really good, talented friends. They are gourmet cheese eaters and will introduce you to some unusual Spanish cheeses and even some extraordinary salt! We visited four different ecosystem locations with varied birdlife- rare tern colonies to the highly endangered Northern Bald Ibis. We even saw Cape Trafalgar! A wonderful, very full, day. Highly recommended and superb VFM.

I joined Nicky and Simon on their ‘mothing the straights’ gig back in late October. They had teamed up with moth-man Dave Grundy for 5 days of intensive Lepidoptery! Fantastically well organized and huge fun. Although the focus wasn’t on birds particularly, all us mothers are birders at heart and Simon and Nicky certainly know their stuff. Their commitment to nature is very evident and anyone, whether experienced or a novice, will learn a huge amount about the wildlife and the places they take you to. I really hope to do it all again next year and would highly recommend hanging out with these guys!

Birdwatching, La Janda, Andalucia: Simon Tonkin + Nicky Williamson are magnificent birding guides. A plethora of knowledge from experienced + dedicated birders + naturalists. Every sound was specified, each eagle eye sighting explained whilst being guided with their telescopes that immersed you into the eco-arena of wading, flying, hunting, perching birds.

What a pleasure to watch + hear the crane festival in the skies + to be witness to the magnificent little Bustards, wonderous Spoonbills, fleeting Kingfishers, speeding Sparrow-hawks enchanting Stone+Chit Chats.

I highly recommend both Nikki and Simon as your professional touring guides on the Peninsula of Spain. It was an inspirational day + photographic delight. What a fabulous way to spend a day engulfed in the avian world.

Thank you.
