Would there be Starbucks without Peet's? We can thank Alfred Peet for establishing the shrine of coffee bars at Walnut & Vine in Berkeley back in 1966. The concept of coffee bar did not exists before Alfred Peet set his foot in this country because prior to that American Coffee had the reputation of being swill and undrinkable. The founders of Starbucks were Alfred Peets' disciple who learned the technique of roasting coffee, took their knowledge to Seattle and opened Starbucks.

If you aren't familiar with Peet's, start now. this is where Starbucks learned to do it. It was once just the store at Walnut Square, but now it's all over the country. I buy the Italian roast and use a French press.

Trying to live off it's former reputation as a purveyor of great fresh roasted java. No more. burnt beans, weak brew. A corporate shell of it's former self...

I have been a Peetnik for almost 40 years. The best roasted , best tasting coffee in Northern California. Mr.Peet got Starbucks started but I still revere him! Don't settle for corporate coffee, drink Peet's.

Friendly, casual, coffee place that is a local favourite and haunt and as it turned out of visitors from the City as well. I chose a chai instead of coffee and my friend a coffee. Both were great. Many people within a small space and yet not noisy. Spent well over an hour ordering nothing else, felt guilty. Great place to be. I love their coffee and buy it for home use.

This is the original Peets, and if for no other reason this is a good reason to visit. But, the atmosphere is authentic, with Berkeley locals always hanging out inside and just outside the corner coffee shop, and they are low key and thoughtful types. Also, there are a bunch of small shops right around the corner that are worth visiting (a shoe store, a wine shop built into an old pumping station, multiple clothes shops, in the heart of the Gourmet Ghetto).
