About
The Benicia Historical Museum at the Camel Barns is housed in four 1850s sandstone buildings in the heart of the historic Benicia Arsenal District. Highlighting unique local history from the Patwin Tribe through the present day, the Museum tells the tale of how this historic city on the Carquinez Strait reflects the exciting changes in the state of California since the city's founding in 1847. "The history of California is written in the story of Benicia."

Lots of fun learning the history of the Camel Barn and Magazine. We did hands on activities like in the pioneer days. Docents are very knowledgeable and enjoy sharing the history with you.

This is a nice little museum with a huge story to tell. Benicia played a significant role in California's early years. The museum has many professionally updated exhibits. Even if you have been in the past, it is worth visiting again.

Lots of interesting exhibits on the history of the town and surrounding area. Very knowledgeable fellow at the desk was happy to talk about a variety of topics. It's self-paced so you can move through the exhibits as quickly or slowly as you like.

Very informative about California and especially local history. Who knew the Pony Express came through here, or that the US Camel Corps was here? Learnabout the many important manufacturing businesses that were once in Benicia and its hitory as an important military arsenal. It' not a location you are likely to come upon by chance, so you much search for it.

I am a docent at the Benicia Historical Museum. Hours 1:00 to 4 pm Wed-Sun. The buildings and exhibits include videos and documents of life at this U.S. Army Post in Benicia before California became a State in 1849.

Many details are seen here. If you run into the curator, she's a walking history book of Benicia - such knowledge. It is a small museum so it would be a short visit but complete visit.

Very interesting, well-done, and unusual displays, such as Benicia's history as an Army Post, where generals, such as U.S. Grant, served. The highly detailed Victorian dollhouse is beautiful. It takes an afternoon, or more, to really appreciate and see everything! The docent that day, who is a Mechanical Engineer and owns a business in the Industrial Park, was great to talk to. When open, an old magazine storage bunker is truly amazing for its immensity and incredibly thick walls!
