Spend your money with local, independant businesses. They need it after all the lockdown restrictions have left many in the hospitality trade struggling so badly. So, that's what my good lady and I thought we would do for our 1st night out together in 9 months. I had heard lovely things about The Penny Farthing, Crayford and really couldn't wait to pay this place a long awaited visit. We had almost finished a lovely meal at Assos (well worth a visit), so I phoned ahead to ask if it was OK to just walk in, or did we have to book a table? The owner answered the phone and said it was OK to walk in and I explained we would be half an hour. He took my name and all was good.
Warning... This is gonna be a long review...
Duly arrived and walked directly in. Half a dozen, or so other customers already seated, but also a number of unoccupied tables. Grumpy looking lady (presumably the wife of the man who I had spoken with) swiftly 'greeted' us with a gruff "No masks?" She then followed that remark with one of those cursory 'up and down looks' that instantly makes you feel uncomfortable. My lady explained that she was exempt. We should have walked out and left it there. But, no... I thought 'give it a chance'.
So, there's jus the two of us. My Fiancée and me. Offered a table (for 4), but then this woman orders .... yes ORDERS us to sit side by side (not opposite each other) just in case others come in and sit at the same table and she needs to put a screen up! The place is half empty so we ask "Have you many bookings tonight, then?".... "No, but we do get walk in's" was the response. Ironically, there was in plain sight.... an unoccupied table for 2 right next door to the table we were offered. We tried to order drinks... "What wine do you have?".... "Red... or white" she rudely replied. No further clarity followed from her until we prompted "OK, what reds do you have? " Quickly and equally as rudely, a choice of 3 reds were revealed. A Malbec, a Merlot or a Rioja. About as informative as a British Rail departure board during a snow storm! After a few moments, more people arrived. These were clearly regulars as they were quickly greeted with a warm welcome and a smile from the woman. No interrogation follwed about these people NOT wearing masks upon arrival. They were allowed to sit at a table of their choosing. We had only been here a few minutes and already wanted to leave. So we took our drinks to an empty table, outside. We placed our drinks on the table, and prepared to sit down. In a matter of seconds, a man (the owner) appeared by us telling us that as we were drinking, we needed to be sat down. "Wow!Give us a chance mate! We got to the table two seconds ago!" I replied. "it's the law" was the surly response. "What is it with this place? The woman inside was so rude as well". "She's my wife"he replied. Well, they are both welcome and well suited to each other, in my humble opinion. Guess what??? All 'regulars' make a first visit to somewhere new and then return time and again. That's how people become 'regulars'. You want more business? How about you start treating every 1st time visitors as regulars? Give a good experience to someone, they might tell someone else. Continue with this piss poor first time customer attitude, and I'm sure you'll be receiving many similar reviews to this one.

Can't believe the place has been open for nearly 3 years now and is a mature part of the local beer and cider scene already. Attentive table service and an ever changing interesting real ale range which rarely will disappoint, oh and lots of ciders too. Summer outdoor pavement seating is a nice added feature. On this visit the ales and ciders were going down well like in the alehouses of old.

Walked past this place several times without realising it was a pub, what a fool I've been!

Took the day off to visit this week, lovely little pub and I do mean little however it's perfect. Great owners, really liked the table service they offer - makes all the difference.

No queues, no noise, no phones - makes a change from a standard pub, really was special.

Beer and cider was also very good, priced well and from what I saw these change weekly - I'm going to go back again soon, you should too

A merry go round of changing beers on offer at this ale house. All served straight from the weekly selection of barrels. Would be great to see a regular local beer available

The Penny Farthing is a micro pub, selling specialist beers from micro breweries throughout the UK. Its a very friendly pub, although small, the hosts make you very welcome and help you choose the right drink for your pallet, I enjoyed the Porter beer the most, as its very different than a beer you would normally buy in a typical pub.
