Robust reconstruction
Dec 2019
The Dominican order was the first Catholic institution to settle in Popayan in 1552. The convent and church were severely damaged by different earthquakes. The last one in 1983 turned the historic church into a ruin (especially the tower). What you see is a robust reconstruction. Inside many images of saints, some of them dressed in clothes.

A white church
Dec 2017
As it allocate in the white town of Popayan, the white church of Santo Domingo is another example of beautiful buildings around. The Baroque church has many and very well preserved

Pretty towered church 1 block east of main plaza.

Tonight we walked 2 blocks up from our Hotel Arcada Payanesa and found this church brightly lite, including the interior of its 3 story octagonal bell tower, and it was open for services.
Founded in 1588, it was rebuilt in its current state in 1741. The unpainted brick arches contrast with the white walls and ceiling, and all focus on its gilded Corinthian altar. Happy we saw it at night filled with locals.

After visiting the Cathedral, the next church I visited is this church. Located at a busy intersection and next to what appeared to be a school, this big colonial church peaked my interest. i tried the front as well as the side entrances, but they are locked.

The locals I asked did not seem to know the opening hours of this church. I took outside pictures of this church, said my prayers before leaving.
