Robust Jesuit church
Dec 2019
Designed by a German Jesuit architect named Simon Shenherr (Sehenherr) after the 1736 earthquake destroyed the first Jesuit church. At the time the Jesuit order was rich and powerful, which is reflected in the predominantly robust Baroque architecture.

This church was severly damaged by the 1983 earthquake. Even the roofs collapsed. The result after reconstruction is impressive. Currently the church serves as a chapel for the University of Popayan, which is perhaps the reason it is almost always closed. A great pity.

Unique

The bell tower of this church is visible from the street of our hotel. So many churches in Popayan, take a time to see them all as they all are worth to see inside

Attractive interior

This Church appears to be open only for services. The exterior fits nicely into the overall street design whilst the interior for non religious people is quite attractive.

What's up with having churches closed at the Historic Center?
Sep 2016 • Solo
Located near the Iglesia de San Francisco, I visited this church , only to be disappointed again! The Fruit vendors located across the street told me that it is open only in the afternoon, around 4-5 p.m.

Similar with what I did at the "closed" churches, I said my prayers and took pictures before leaving.
