About Popayan Tours
Popayan Tours is the first adventure tour company in Southern Colombia. We offer private transport to the Archaelogical sites of Tierradentro and San Agustin as well as hiking trips to the Purace Volcano (4,650m). Our most popular tour is the Coconuco downhill biking trip. Guests are collected from the centre of Popayan at 10am and driven to the indigenous mountain village of Cocouco where they can bathe in the hot thermal springs. After a time in the springs they jump on the bikes and start the 30km leisurely ride back to Popayan. The route is mainly downhill on a paved road with very little traffic. For those looking for something a bit more extreme, we also offer a downhill biking trip from the Purace Volcano.

Overview
Since 2009, the Coconuco biking trip has been departing almost every single day of the year and is now considered to be Colombia’s most popular (and longest running) biking trip. Our bikes are extremely well-maintained with hydraulic disc brakes, rapid-fire gearing, 120mm suspension forks and puncture-resistant tyres.  The trip includes bike rental, helmet rental, spare inner tube pump. We also include insurance with each of our trips.

We, three friends from Israel, took a tour with Tony. We enjoyed several waterfalls, the Magdelena river, hot baths, biking and especially San Agustin which is among the most impressive sites in the continent. Everything was well organized and well performed. Tony explained us during the long ways about various aspects of the region and connected us with Duviel Malagon who guided us for many hours in the main archaeological site.

We’ll run agency by a couple from Scotland. Great service and plenty of great suggestions. Reliable, courteous, bilingual, informative, always on time, well rounded and knowledgeable people with much experience working in Latin America.

Kim and Tony, a Scottish couple who are long time Columbian residents run a friendly hostel in Popayan (they serve great coffee and cakes) as well as a tour business. Kim responded very promptly and efficiently to all my questions prior to booking the tour and was flexible with regard to my itinerary. She arranged a wonderful guide (Dubiel) to see the UNESCO heritage archaeological sites in San Augustin and then Tony picked me up there to drive me to Popayan. I then did the full day Purace National Park trip (with a local guide to see the condors and hot springs) as well as the full day trip to the UNESCO heritage Tierradentro and Isnos stone church. Both trips were very interesting and worth the experience. I had three full days of talking with Tony who proved to be a highly interesting person to speak to as he is widely read and listens to many interesting podcasts. I'm a vegetarian and Tony always managed to get a vegetarian lunch special at a local restaurant which was always excellent. Prices are very fair for the service provided. I cannot recommend this tour company enough.

We (two retired couples from the US with quite a bit of experience traveling somewhat off the beaten track) used Popayan Tours for a five day/four night custom tour of the Silvia market (with a local guide), Tierradentro (2 nights) and St Agustin (2 nights) with a stop at Coconuco hot springs and bike back to Popayan (abbreviated because of rain). We designed the tour with the very useful advise of Kim, on of the co-founders of PT. She could not have been more helpful and knowledgeable. Our driver/guide was Tony, co-founder of PT, who has extensive knowledge of the area and beyond in Colombia. We had great conversions with Tony about Colombia and much more. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour. In short, without Tony and Kim's help this would have been a train wreck. Keep in mind that the roads can be rough with 4-5 hour rides (with some unavoidable dirt roads) if you repeat this tour. Kim and Tony are very up-front as far as what to expect so be sure to pay attention to their advice. Also, Tony and Kim run the Hostel Caracol which acts as their home base.

Popayán tours organized a great day tour for us to Purace National Park at short notice. Their driver Mauro Medina was friendly, helpful and skilled and handled the very rough roads really well. The special treat was the Indigenous guide Marta Quira who shared her wide ranging knowledge of ethnobotany and cultural geography with generosity and good humor. She showed us the feeding of the condors, the lagoons, the alpine cactus fields and the thermal springs. We definitely recommend this highly.
