This is amazing place to visit if you love to have a day trip for canoeing and swimming. So you need to get to Canoe Lake . It takes approximately 2 hours 30 min from Toronto to reach Canoe Lake. With couple for 10 min stops on route for coffee / rest / washrooms. On the week ends you will find a bit of traffic if you choose to leave after 9am. Once you cross Barrie which is half way point the road forward is pretty fast to cover! Once you enter canoe lake area there is lot of parking spots for free. There are couple of restaurants and they are pretty good !! I had snacks there. Just behind the restaurants you will find canoes. They will give you a life jacket , canoe and off you go.. it is better to take a guide if you do not have canoe experience.. although I found it pretty easy !! We had few girls under the age of 12 who rowed pretty decent.. so I assume it’s not that bad.. one you start rowing you can go to the nearest shore or island and can swim there !! Water was warm . Do take your towels and extra pair of clothes !!

During covid also there were lot of crowd .. many out for spots to eat .. inside you need to wear masks !!

This canoe and swimming should not take you more than 3 hours .. once done you can get to near by Ragged Falls.. for that pls see my review for Ragged Falls :)

Feel free to ask me questions !!

Nutshell :

1) leave before 7 so that u can reach before 9 to avoid traffic and have a ful day to enjoy
2) take snacks along and stop just one to save time on the way

3) get fuel filled at Barrie and on the way back !

4) do not forget masks

5) take towels an extra pair of clothes

6) leave before 6 to avoid traffic on the way back..

I've wanted to visit this lake for year because this is where Tom Thomson (my favourite artist) died. There were a lot of people but the area was still clean and beautiful. The store and restaurant look over the lake where you can rent canoes. I bought a sweater there that I love.

As a huge fan of the work of the Group of Seven, I have always wanted to visit Canoe Lake and the tribute to Tom Thomson. It did not disappoint. Easy to find on the North side of the Lake, it is a fitting tribute to him. And we had a visit from a loon while paddling. Delightful.

Tom Thomson is one of the inspirations for the group of Canadian artists known as the "Group of Seven." He described himself as an artist, guide and woodsman. He helped popularize Algonquin Provincial Park drowned mysteriously in 1917 at Canoe Lake. This is a memorial to Tom Thomson and overlooks the lake he loved and drowned in.

Travelled with 3 other friends, rented two 2-seater aluminum canoes for 4 hours ($72.21 in total, ended up only using about 3 hours). It's a large lake, but most of the islands are privately owned, so you can't go exploring much. There are chances to see wildlife, but we didn't see any. Fun and enjoyable, expect to get a workout from rowing. There were a good number of other people there, but they were friendly and not an issue. Didn't feel crowded.

Kayal/canoe rentals available for good price (4 hours ~$30). Was quite windy when we went so we didn't use all the time up. Food choices were limited so I would recommend bringing your own food/drinks etc. Rentals provide boat, lifejacket, safety buoy, and paddles. Will visit again!

Easy to access, with plenty of parking space.
Canoe Lake is quite large, yet a good location to get to know canoeing. We had a great day on the water, experiencing how to navigate a canoe for the first time. You are informed quite well before leaving, yet be aware that you have "to do it all yourself". Which includes putting the boat in the water & getting in the canoe. And of course - at the end of the trip - getting out of the canoe and getting the canoe out of the water. But: someone is watching you, and is prepared to help you if needed.

It's the perfect spot to visit with your friends over the weekend, to get away from city life, and to enjoy canoeing on the lake.

I'm not telling you exactly where it is because we want it all to ourselves but there is the most amazing private island camping accessed through this park. Best paddle and camp ever.
