What's That Tower on the Nearby Hill
Sep 2021
We walked up via the Folly Loch and through the woods, following our noses and eyes towards the column/tower on the hill. Great walk and great views of the surrounding countryside from the base of the tower. We only wish we'd visited Lothian Estates beforehand and got the key to the tower (£5 apparently) which would have allowed us to climb to the top. This tower was commissioned by the Marquess of Lothian, who lived at nearby Monteviot, to commemorate Wellington's victory over Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815

Amazing!

Well worth the climb of 228 steps, via a spiral staircase to the top. Pick up the key (book in advance) from Lothian Estates, Bonjedward and away you go! We were lucky enough to enjoy a beautiful day without a cloud in the sky, but I would imagine that a visit in the rain would be beautiful and haunting.

Decent walk and amazing views

Decent walk, worth the climb. We saw lots of baby grouse wandering around which explains why there’s a sign to keep dogs on leads. The views were amazing from the top and going up to the monument was a good landmark for the rest of our stay

Waterloo 1815
Apr 2019 • Friends
I am quite of a history buff that was why it fascinated me coming over to Napoleon's Waterloo battlefield museum. So anybody who likes what happened in history that had an impact in our world, e.g.,'what could have happened if Napoleon won the battle...? This place will excite your imagination. It is an interesting place to see how the actual battle took place from the views and strategies of the opposing sides via a short film at the 18q5 museum.

Absolutely AWESOME
Aug 2019
Having read reviews from others, we collected the keys from the Lothian Estate office, almost next door to the car wash garage on the A68. The £5 fee was well worth it. We walked from the Harestanes visitor centre using the well signposted route. Arriving at the memorial the doors weren't the easiest to open, just a bit fiddly. Climbing to the top the stairway has both handrail and rope attached to the wall. On a dull day you would probably need a torch. The view from the platform is more than amazing, well worth the climb.

If it was not for the reviews of this places e would never had been able to walk up the tower. It is definitely worth the £5. Go to the Lothian Estate office in Bonjedburgh- turn left just after the garbage on the A68 you can’t miss it. You get a map and the keys. Then back into your car to Harestanes Visitor Centre. Free parking then walk whichever route you want to the tower. Going up the tower is great and you feel privileged that it is just you. Highly recommend.

Passed this landmark all my life - finally got to the top

Call in at Lothian Estates office at Bonjedward and for £5 you can get keys to the tower. Park at Harestanes visitor centre and walk to the tower by a variety of routes. The tower has 228 steps on a spiral so not for everyone but on top the panoramic views are superb.

This was a fantastic thing to do. We parked at Harestanes visitors centre and walked up to monument and had keys from estate office to get in and climb to the top. Great views.

Spectacular views

You will be well rewarded on a clear day with some of the best views to be had in the Borders. The walk there takes you through pleasant woods and you'll see a variety of wildlife on the way.

Park at Harestane's visitor's centre and ask for a walks leaflet there. The walk to the monument is well marked and maintained. Only the final part is steep - appropriate footwear required.
