Another must-see in Tortosa is the imposing Castillo de la Suda, which dominates the city’s landscape from any point thanks to its privileged location on one of the hills surrounding the city. The castle was built by Muslims in the 10th century, at the time of Abd-al-Rahman III and served as a fixed residence for both Muslims and successive Christian kings. During the Civil War the castle was practically destroyed and had to undergo a major renovation for its conservation and that has long been Parador Nacional.

Either steps or a heavy upwards slope to gain access from the cathedral area , and not easy under foot at the location. Ok there are good views of the town from up on the parapets but you need to be a mountain goat to access , There is limited parking at the base of the "castle " ruins but again from there access from there is difficult. We were underwhelmed

Suda de Tortosa is the castle located in the upper part of the city, which is located in the South of Catalonia. Nowadays this castle is a hotel, from where you can see very beautiful views of the city, the river and the surroundings. I came here to relax and drink two glasses of red wine of Terra Alta, the nearest wine region. I stayed in the bar two hours and it was very comfortable. A very good place in the city.

A historic center with its abandoned monuments. Cathedral and museums closed in the middle of August.
Very few restaurants and bars open.
Many dilapidated buildings with closed streets.
Very special atmosphere in this city.

I stayed in the parador here, so I got to see this structure quite bit. It's high on a hill overlooking the city but it's only a 10-minute walk to get here from the middle of town. Although it was damaged during the Civil War, the restoration is near perfect. It has all the character and charm of a 15th century castle. From the river, particularly, it's an imposing site. It's just something that's never seen in North America.

This castle is situated in the centre of the town and is built on a steep hill. It has been converted into a hotel but the general public is able to walk around the ramparts to enjoy the view.

This Moorish castle sits above and looks down on the city of Tortosa. The views from the castle walls, over the mighty river Ebro and across to the mile-high Mount Caro are simply stunning. You can walk up from the town or drive around, taking the signs to the Parador (state-run posh hotel). Free access to the castle walls.

Worth a walk up the hills/incline to visit the top part of the fortified city of Tortosa. You get an amazing view of the town and the remnants of the fortifications that would have protected in in days gone by. Look out for the huge canons..sadly without too much info.
