The museum also covers human evolution, stone age societies as well as the scientific study of prehistory. There’s English as well as Spanish labels and descriptions, but not for every exhibit. Anything really important will have both though. The finest exhibition in the museum is the replica cave and cave art, which sadly can no longer be visited for conservation reasons. The curators have done a superb job of recreating the sealed off caves. Totally worth the entrance fee.Visited November 2022Written December 18, 2022
- AMsaysThornhill, Canada4,056 contributionsTimes of AltamiraThe discovery of the Altamira Caves is credited to Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola in 1879, but in actual fact, his 8-year-old daughter, Maria first noticed that the cave ceilings were covered with images of bison. Here, the permanent exhibition “Times of Altamira" showcases prehistoric life in the Cantabria region from art, culture, living conditions, hunting methods and more. There are some explanations in both Spanish and English, but most are without. At the time I went, some of my questions were answered by the museum attendant. At the other end of the museum is a screening room that leads to the renowned Cave and Palaeolithic Art reproductions.Visited November 2022Written December 22, 2022
- NormandInLondonLondon, United Kingdom786 contributionsExtremely unpleasant and rude guide, but interesting & Impressive museum and cave.Museum section is good, interesting, has many interesting information panels and artefacts. The problem, for me was the guided tour in the cave. As of my visit, (August 2023), you could only visit the cave with a guided tour. So we took one, but instantly regretted it. The guide was extremely rude and kept shouting at us for no particular reason. 2. I can understand spanish and talk it fluently, so I understood, but this guide spoke absolutely no english. We felt like we were paying the lady to shout at us. Thoroughly unpleasant. It's a real shame that that ruined our experience as the cave and museum were both really impressive and beautiful. The museum building itself was striking. So, to balance it out, I'm rating Altamira three stars. We are sorry that your experience was not satisfactory. The Spanish tourism website indicated (for days) that tickets were available through Bank Santander (NO THEY ARE NOT - either online, BS website, branches, ATMs or at the BS headquarters) or at Cave museum.
Well, we were among dozens of very UNHAPPY travelers that found out (after days of waiting and hours of driving) that tickets are not available unless purchased weeks in advance.
If you know exactly which day/time frame you'll want to visit the museum they don't bother showing up.
We spoke to may locals, hotel manager, and tourists who had the same unfortunate experience.

A museum dedicated to the prehistory of the region and reproduction of the artwork of the Altamira Caves. Since the original caves are virtually closed to the public, these high quality copies will have to do. There is no signage other than in Spanish and there is lack of literature in any other language — audio guides would have been good.

An amazing place to travel through the history of mankind. Though the original caves cannot be accessed, the museum has constructed a model of the original one. The museum has many information and bones, skulls and displays from the age of the Neanderthals.
The video show before the tour of the caves is very good too.
The cave models are very intriguing and interesting. Loved the visit there.

What a fascinating story of discovery in this excellent museum. Begins with a short video and then into the cave replica that really does give one the feel of the caves and art. Rest of the museum documents the past archaeological finds with artifacts, narrative texts, and videos. Good coverage of discoveries in other locations and the evolution of man. Lovely gift shop with a variety of souvenir objects. Kudos to the museum designers. Would not miss this experience.

This is an amazing museum on Prehistoric times. The most interesting thing is the Altamira replica and the guide visit. It explains how the Prehistoric people lived in Altamira, the cave paintings and their symbols, and the style of live during the Paleolithic period. It is worthwhile the visit. It is located a few miles from Santillana.

Queued for over an hour in the rain for tickets because there was only one person in the ticket office. The “caves” are a simulation of the actual caves, which is not made clear anywhere. The museum is quite interesting, but overall it didn’t seem worthwhile out queuing for all that time. Fortunately entry is cheap and there are lots of concessions.

We are sorry for your long wait. The caves must remain closed for conservation reasons, which we indicate on our website. We hope your next visit will be more satisfactory.

Back to the schoolperiod. The drawings of Altamira were in historybooks. Now we visited the replica in Altamira. This was our third try to get inside and we had a luck. On a sunday it isn't possible to pre-order tickets and for free. We had to wait one hour. Happy we did it!

Hi,
Do Santander taxi, train or bus drive to the Museo de Altamira? Which one would be convenient? I am not planning to drive a car to the location but would be happy to take public transportation... Any idea for the cost to get there on a taxi?
Thank you,
Vitaliy

Sorry, we stayed nearby so didn’t need to check this out. Also, if you did change your mind about driving, there is a big car park there, which was not clear from the publicity!

Hey! I'm curious if it were possible to visit the cave? I understand that at the museum there are the exact replicas though. Thanks a lot!

Visits to the cave follow a strict protocol and it is not possible prior registration nor any access different that the open selection of five visitants that takes place every Friday. This protocol was fixed by the Museum’s Board of Trustees on 2015 and remains unchanged.
Nonetheless, we encourage you to take part in Friday’s selections and, in the meantime, we invite you to discover Altamira at our museum facilities. We offer a wide variety of cultural experiences such as the three-dimensional replica of the cave and its art, the Neocave, and an exhibition on The Times of Altamira.

Se vuoi evitare la fila devi prenotarla su internet e vai direttamente all'ingresso del museo evitando la biglietteria.
Quanto costa, sinceramente non me lo ricordo.
