Santillana Del Mar & Altamira Museum

3 reviews
This is an excellent choice for travelers interested in medieval sights, beautiful architecture, and museums. Take the stress out of traveling on crowded public transport and opt for a stress-free alternative—a day trip with hotel pickup and drop-off included. Visit the stunning village of Santillana de Mar, see the Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana, the Altamira Museum and its Neocave, the Museum of Jesus Otero, and have time for shopping too.

This is a beautiful main square in Santillana del Mar. The town is just incredible, it is just like going back to the Middle Ages. It is surrounded by the Borja Tower, the town hall, and several picturesque houses. Everything is cobblestone, so I highly recommend to comfortable shoes.

My husband and I visited this charming medieval village during a long weekend, so its was very crowded, with no parking available. Make sure you don´t visit Santilla during a holiday. On the other hand, we had visited Santillana before, on a Sunday, when everything was closed and it looked gloomy. When shops are open, it bursts with activity, so I´m not sure which extreme is better. Schedule carefully your visit. Some places like the allies and Plaza Mayor are always beautiful, but the Colegiata closes from 1:30 to 16:00. Bring comfy shores, with sturdy soles, since the cobbled streets are very irregular.

We really enjoyed strolling around in this lovely and quaint town of Santillana del Mar. The Plaza Mayor is its heart. From here little cobbled streets meander off in all directions, inviting exploring and shopping.

You need to park a few hundred meters away and walk into the cobbled square. The streets are filled with shops and restaurants and the square is beautiful and very well kept. Stay at the Paradore Gil Blas to enjoy the most of the square b
