A Life Changing Experience For Volunteers and Animals
Sep 2018 • Solo
I volunteered with the Capuchin Monkeys at Parque Machia Bolivia in September 2017.

A Life Changing Experience For Volunteers and Animals

This was my first experience of South America and also Volunteering. The first day consisted of training and reading manuals about the history of each animal. Safety training was also explained for each of the animals. We weren’t allowed to interact with any animals that we weren’t assigned to. This was to ensure that only trained volunteers would help their specific animals. CIWY provides accommodation although basic it has everything you need including toilets, showers and beds. My tasks included preparing food and enrichment throughout the day and to ensure the animals were properly cared for. At CIWY the animals always come first and this is a great outlook as the main goal is to achieve happiness for the animals. All the animals I met were well looked after and safety of both volunteers and animals was always ensured. We were given lunch that was cooked fresh daily. The food was always delicious and people were always going up for more. Breakfast and Dinner were available to purchase onsite for a small fee and all cooked fresh. In the evenings volunteers would play volleyball, we also played football against a local team and went out for meals as a group. I am looking to go back next year and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Nice park
Dec 2017 • Friends
I can totally recomend this park. It is cheap (6 bolivianos), you have a really good view from the mirador over the village, river and rain forrest. The monkeys are super cute. It will take you max. 2 h. And you could walk there from villa tunari if you want (~15 min).

1.5 km hike for wildlife viewing
May 2017
A pleasant short hike right in town. The staff may try to dissuade you from visiting due to the fact that the experience has changed from what it used to be, so many people still expect to see many animals in rehabilitation. The current experience is simply a hike in the forest. There is a greater chance to see monkeys than in other places because the ones previously rehabilitated lived in relative freedom and many are still there. We visited with two children, and while some spots were slippery due to rain, they were able to complete the hike with no complaints. It is common to see spider monkeys at the outlook and the view is quite nice of the river. This was a convenient activity because it is right across the bridge from the main part of town and is great for 2-3 hours.
