Great scenery, especially in the winter, because of the shapes and colors of the clouds. Gaze the sea at the end of the dock.

The fortress is a great place to take a photo wether it be of the castle from the promenade or the castle of the beautiful Nafplio.
The castle is one of the most photographed landmarks in the Peloponnese, simply stunning.

I see here that many of you have mistaken Bourtzi castle for Akcronafplio. Akcronafplia is located on a rocky hill adjacent to the town. Easily accessible by foot and car, I'd recommend this place for its stunning sunset and sunrise views. No entry fee, accessible at any time of the day or night. What's more fascinating is that it's drive through castle. How many Roman castles can we drive through at this time? This was my first one. Totally worth it. Take water and snacks as there are no eateries around it.

We did not have enough time on our last visit to Nafplion to visit this fortress in the bay but rectified that oversight on this last visit. This fortress can be reached by a short boat ride (inexpensive - 5-6 euros) and is surprisingly large and intact although there are no interior rooms for viewing. The views of the town and harbor and both fortresses above the town make this an absolute must-do excursion.

Some of the reviews for Arkonafplia talk about other attractions in Nafplio and cause confusion. This is neither Bourtzi(which is reachable only by boat) nor Palamidi Castle (for which you have to climb 999 stairs). Arkonafplia is the old fortress of the city located on the hill behind the historical city center. You can easily reach it both by car and by foot. It is a pleasant place where you can admire the city from above.

Although our book said this was not a very interesting place to visit, we loved it. Drive the car up, and start walking around this huge castle complex which has commanding views of the surrounding area, the city and the sea.

Scenic views of the town and the sea. The castle is exciting to walk through with all the hidden features. Be prepared to take a lot of pictures.

Our guided tour stopped in Nafplio for a couple of hours on our last day of the holiday. While many of my companions ambled around the pretty streets or sat outside a café with a cool drink, I headed up the steps with my camera to the Akronafplia Fortrtess. Although I did not have enough time to go into the fortress, I was able to take some terrific shots looking down over the old town towards the bay and, from the other side, towards the fortification on top of an adjoining mountain - very impressive. I wished that I had more time to explore the town, with its interesting examples of Venetian architecture here and there.

The Fortress on the Acropolis overlooking the old town of Nafplio is fun to explore and makes an impressive backdrop to this fascinating city. As one of three fortresses that guard Napflio, the Akronafplia Fortress is often overshadowed by the larger Palamida fortress that looms above the city and the tiny island fortress of Bourtzi in the harbor.

Exploring the fortress is a great way to spend an hour or so. There are views over the rooftops of the old city, a bell tower and an ancient amphitheater. As you will read in other reviews, one of the best ways to tackle this hike is to start with an air conditioned elevator ride from the parking circle at the end of the old town to the swanky Napflio Palace Hotel and Villas. From there you can hike to the highest point where you'll find a large cobble stone circle with a large letter H (presumably for helicopter). Double back and head down hill past and derelict looking skeleton of a modern hotel and on to the walls, amphitheater and bell tower.

A good and interesting walk along the ramparts with stunning views. Make sure you save the legs by catching the lift hidden underneath the mountain at the end of the point.
