We accidentally found this old entrance to the city as we parked our car nearby.
It was one of the gates (porta) to the medieval city of Nafplio built by Venetians during their first rule.
On top of the gate is a lion - symbol of Venice. Nice photo stop with Akronafplia fortress behind and gateway to beautiful Nafplio.

This is an medieval structure built in 1708 during the Venetian occupation and remodeled in 1894. There is a sculptured lion standing on top of the gate surrounded on a piece of bared land. Background on top of the hill is the castle overlooking the whole of Nafplio.

Very cool spot at the bottom when you prepare to walk up the 999 steps to Palamydi Fortress.
I enjoyed this area a lot. Nafplio is very charming.

First constructed under the Venetians in the 1680s, what we admire today is a reconstruction but it gives a fine semblance of what an impressive entrance it was.
It marked one of the portals to the city and closed right after sunset. So too bad if you arrived after that because you had to spend the night outside the city.
With a lion atop and different stone work on front and back it continues to be a popular landmark.

It is worth visiting to see the unique entrance to the city during the time of Otto. Landmark of Nafplion.
