Dedicated to General strong both on the military and love front.
Jul 2019
This monument is dedicated to the leader of the Greek War of Independence (1821-1829), General Theodoros Kolokotronis. A man of remarkable biography who served in the Russian Navy and the British army led the Greek insurgents. Smart, determined Kolokotronis was able to reverse the outcome of the war of independence, inflicting a terrible defeat on the Turks in the narrow Dervenaki gorge. The outcome of the struggle, however, was decided by the Russian-British-French fleet, which destroyed the Turkish-Egyptian fleet in the Navarino Bay. After the Declaration of independence, Kolokotronis supported the first President Kapodistrias, whose monument stands nearby. The President was killed, Kolokotronis fell out with everyone, including because of his excessive vanity. He mutinied, went to prison, seduced a nun who gave birth to a future military commander. A son from a previous marriage then became Prime Minister. In General, Kolokotronis was strong both on the military and on the love front. The monument on the square depicts the moment when Kolokotronis ascends on his horse on the steep slopes of Palamidi, after the Turkish garrison of Nafplion capitulated.

Unveiled in 1901 and created by the Greek artist Lazaros Sochos, it’s located in the pleasant eponymous park.

It portrays Theodoros Kolokotronis, one of the heroes of the Greek war of independence, commandingly on horseback.

Holding the reins in his left hand he points the way forward with his right.

This is a statue of the general Kolokotroni we learned about at the Fortress of Palamida so it was nice to see him on his horse

Impressive statue in pretty setting but not worth a detour

The park is actually more worth visiting than the statue IMHO. Its a lovely and relaxing area where you can grab coffee. But the statue itself doesn't have any particular merit. I'd give this a swerve unless you are struggling to fill your time in Nafplio - even the bead museum is better than this.

Great angle for photography

About 10 minutes spent there - Pass there if you stroll around the harbor and want to continue from there towards the city center. What I liked about the location is that the background behind the statue is the fortress, and the soldier looks like he is looking up at the walls. The angle illustrates a little of what happened in ancient times.

Impressive Monument of National Hero.
Oct 2017
We visited the park with the impressive statute of Kolokotronis several times during our stay in Nafplio. General Kolokotronis was instrumental in the uprising and revolution against the Ottoman Empire during the war for Greek Independence.

The park is centrally located with cafes, restaurants and stores all around it. A very pleasant location with great historical significance.
