Small but informative
Aug 2020 • Family
Due to Corona we needed to wait a bit to be allowed in. The staff was really nice about this and very helpful. Even giving us a discount as we had been waiting for some time with small kids.

Its a small museum and not everything worked (stuff kids could press or lights that needed to show up on a map), but it was really informative. Esp. the staff explained a lot. I did not know for example this area still has an active magma chamber underneath it!

Helpful, friendly and small museum. Shame some stuff did not work. When it is fixed again it would add an additional star to this review.

Shut in Winter - including the busy Easter Holidays
Apr 2017 • Family
This museum is located right next door to the Tourist Office in Daun. However, it is closed all Winter, including during the Easter Holidays in April, when there were lots of potential visitors. Great Pity. We went to a smaller museum in Strohn which was well done. Hope this is helpful for other winter visitors!

This is a great museum to visit.

This is one museum you need to visit. After we took a very long hike to a "maar". We walked to the museum to see all the fossils they have. There is even a section where you can hold in your hand many stones with fossils in them. It is great to take your children too.

Amazing overview of the formation of the eifel region
Jun 2015 • Family
Easy access from the marktplatz carpark. Extremely good value entrance fee (6€ for a family). The cashier gave us a quick run through of the museum exhibits, which although in German, my family was able to understand. You can then view the interactive exhibits at your leisure. You get a good appreciation of the region's volcanic history and attractions and our only regret was that we hadn't visited earlier in our trip because we spent the rest of the day visiting the more accessible sites. Definitely worth a visit if in the area.

Daun Volcano Museum, Eifel
May 2015 • Family
Tucked away in the centre of Daun is the Vulkanmuseum or Volcano Museum in English.

This is a compact and thoughtfully put together museum to the Geology of the area and its wider context, how the Eifel came to be and lots of samples presented very well. For the budding geologist, school science trip or pure interest to know more about the origins of the beautiful area of Eifel this is a great place to start. It tells the story through interactive tools. Information sheets available at the entrance in multiple languages. The highlight for the young might be the model (active volcano)! Apart from all that volcanic history there are also many fossils from the Jurassic and Triassic period when these volcanoes lived. But its a good place to start from before touring and walking/cycling around the Volcanic lakes (or Marre) and enjoying the beautiful scenery of this area.
