We only did about 7km of the Manderscheid-Wittlich section, but it was absolutely fantastic (maybe not for people afraid of heights, but I am and I managed).

This was enough to make us want to go back, stay in Manderscheid (we were staying in Gerolstein, about 35 minutes drive), and walk the full route.

As it was fall, lots of fallen leaves where on the path, making it a bit too slippery in places (sometimes the path is rather narrow, and rather high above the Lieser river), but after about 2km of slippery-ness we passed someone with a leaf-blower clearing the leaves from the path. We passed 1 couple, so although it wasn't busy, it's still well maintained.

While we were in Daun we did do part of the Lieserpfad to Manderscheid. But the weather turned bad. So we turned back to the Hotel. One note to find the correct path walk up behind the hotel till you get to some small garden on you right. Then take the path down the hill along some more small gardens till you get to a street. Turn right on this road and you will see the signs to get to the Manderscheid. There are other paths to take in the area too.

We walked the first part of the Lieserpfad, from Daun to Manderscheid. The signs are very clear and the walking trail is not too difficult. We made the walk in 3.5 hours. You have great views, nice little bridges across the Lieser and shelters to eat lunch.

The Lieser is a little river which is more or less followed by this path (=Pfad). The valley has no streets, so there is no traffic. The path is not difficult to follow, but due to some "side valleys" which cross it gets quite up and down, so you should be fit enough to make the whole trip. If you once started you either go back after a while or you make the path till the end in Manderscheid, where you can catch a bus back to Daun.Look up the timetable before leaving, because the bus is not going often.
Nature along the Lieserpfad is beautiful, often you can see the Lieser flowing in it's valley where you'll be either higher up or closer down. Great variety of trees and plants, but no place to get food or drinks, so be prepared to have enough water with you, as you will work up a sweat :-)

We made first a part of the Eifelsteig coming from Daun passing three "Maare" (vulcanic lakes) then had lunch at the restaurant of Hotel Michels in Schalkenmehren (ro recommend!).
From Schalkenmehren it is a good three hours walk to Manderscheid, so a total of well six hours hiking.
