Magnificent castle that dominates the valley
May 2019 • Couples
This castle isn't open every day and has two guided tours when it is open. We had walked up - pleasant walk - on one of the rest days. Needed to read the opening times more carefully. There is a car park at the base of the hill and then a walk up to the castle. The guided tour was only in German - understandably so, and the guide gave very full information. One of us could speak some German and the other was fortunately given a handout in English. There are only a few rooms open to the public but the displays and the museum give a good idea of life in this approximately 800 year old castle. Recommendation - if it is a cold day wear warm clothes. The rooms were very cold. However, small coffee shop at the end of the tour and we warmed up with a hot drink. It is a must see though when you visit Aschau im Chiemgau.

Very onteresting

Be warned - it's a steep walk up to this castle, allow 40 minutes. This is Ludwig II's famous fairytale turreted castle built in homage to Wagner. It was never completed. The guided tour takes you through magnificently furnished and decorated rooms and up lots of staircases. The day we were there, there was a fire emergency as we reached the top floor. The evacuation of everyone was well handled and the fire brigade arrived promptly.

Go see the raptor bird show!

This place is so beautiful and charming. Take a picnic or eat at a Biergarten next door. They offer tours and a special raptor (birds of prey) shows and even Shakespearean shows.

Nice Bavarian castle, however...

...wish I knew German well enough to understand the tour guide better. It was great to get to go inside this beautiful place! I totally appreciate that this castle does not have enough English speaking visitors to warrant offering tours in that language but perhaps a fact sheet in English would be possible to provide highlights to those who aren't fluent in German. The tour price is modest - if I recall correctly, around 5 Euros. It was definitely still worth it, even though we understood very little of the tour guides commentary.

wear good shoes to walk up the steep incline to the castle, where the view is breath taking. take your time to experience the Falken birds. Reserve sufficient time and take the tour to learn about the history of the castle and it contributions to the area.
