I visited Kampenwand with my wife and my12 year old son to follow a hiking route we found online. We took the cable car up and followed a loop around the summit with a side trip to the summit itself. Although the route was a bit more strenuous than the description led us to believe, it was quite doable. The views were fantastic all around. We stopped for lunch at Steinlingalm which was quite nice and reasonably priced. This is much more civilized hiking than we are used to in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We hiked for a total of 6.85 km which took about half a day including the ride up and down.

The ride in the cable car was slightly nerve wracking for someone slightly afraid of heights but looking out to the amazing views of Chiemsee and the Bavarian countryside was well worth it! We did the short walk along the Panoramic Way to the Steinling-Alm where a delicious hot chocolate and apple cake warmed us up. The kids loved the views, alpine cows, scrambling on rocks and the walk was short enough in the cool that it was really easy and enjoyable.

Went up the cable car and hiked down. Lots of cows with a cacophony of cowbells - so fun!! Great views. The only complaint....no distances on the signs along the trail. The signs just showed an estimate of time to the various locations and I didn't find that very helpful. Even though I'm used to miles vs. kilometers, it still would have been more helpful to have km marked rather than time.

Cable car into the valley - beautiful. This overcrowded place demands hiking shoes and wind stoppers.

If it's views you want, this is a great ride but the fares are quite expensive. Great walks at the summit.

The cable car is so nice and cute. The mountains and views are beautiful. Lots of options for nice food on the mountain. And beautiful walking. Although the trail map isn't numbered and that can be confusing on the way down if you are walking.

This is ideal for those who can't manage the hike on foot as you can take the cable car to the almost the top where you can either sit and have some food or drink or you can walk a little further and take in some of the views of the other side of the mountain. On a clear day the lake can be seen from up there with fabulous views of the town below.

This is the cutest newly restored 50ties gondola- up to a mountain of about 1850 Meter. from there you have a view to die for. Up there you can just walk 100 Meter to a small restaurant with a panoramic view or hike for 20 minutes to an alpine hut with the best Bavarian food.

Picking a late autumn day to escape the foggy bavarian lowlands we decided to get up to the Kampenwand. Excellent decision, the weather was gorgeous and the hikes on the Kampenwand are, although Alpin and steep, fairly easy to do. We started from Aschau and made it up to the Gori-Alm in 2h and were rewarded with delicious and perfectly sized Kaiserschmarrn (at least for an hungry, adult mountaineer). From there is one of the nicest and easiest climbs in the alps with, if the weather permits, gorgeous views over the Chiemsee and the Austrian mountains inlcuding the Loferer Steinberge, Großglockner, wilder Kaiser and the German Watzman. The cable car is fairly expensive but provides a wonderful opportunity to come back down and enjoy the view over marvelous Aschau and the trees besides it - especially in autumn!
