Its in Orchha town, but we could not visit it due to paucity of time. This palace was made for the dancer who used to perform before the King.

Rai Praveen Mahal is a small palace built within a garden called Anand Mahal. This building was built for Rai Parveen, the beautiful concubine of Raja Indramani, and a poet, dancer and musician.

It is said that Rai Praveen's fame had spread far and wide and finally reached the court of the Mughal emperor Akbar. The emperor was enamoured by the beauty of Rai Praveen and had asked for her to be sent to his durbar at Agra. Indramani couldn't defy the emperor's summons and he persuaded Rai Praveen to go to Akbar's court. She presented herself before the emperor and asked permission to recite a couplet. The couplet is as follows:

Vinit Rai Praveen ki, suniye sah sujan
Juthi patar bhakat hain, bari, bayas, swan.

[O' good and intelligent! Please listen to the prayer of Rai Praveen
Only a bari (a person from a lower caste), a barber and a mongrel ate from a plate partaken by someone else.]

Akbar was intelligent enough to understand the import of Rai Praveen's couplet and he immediately asked her to return to Orchha with full honour.

The small building is in a good state compared to the other kothis nearby. However, it isn't frequented by tourists, so if you are alone please be careful. There was a security guard when I visited, but he was busy playing cards.

The place is not exactly a mahal and is largely in ruins but the story of Rai Praveen, a courtesan is interesting.

Rai Praveen , as history of Bundela dynasty tells us, had been a highly honored Lady who helped save the dynasty from wrath of the Moghul King Akbar . She was a learned woman and she was also well known as an Indian Classical dancer n singer of high repute. Times got her a high esteem and Love from the Price. The captioned Palace was built by order of the King in her Honor upon her saving the '' State '' as quoted above. Unfortunately no guide takes one to the place even though it is very near to the Jehangir Palace and the Royal Palace .

Rai Praveen is part of the Orchha Fort Complex. This is a small palace which is presently in dilapidated state. Many people do not even go there. Even the guides don't show Praveen Mahal. Not worth the visit and can be skipped.

This palace was built for the rumored lover of the King. Parveen Rai was a talented poet, singer, dancer and musician so much that even Akbar wanted her in his court. But she came back to the Bundelas. This palace has many colorful Murals of her.
