The Chaturbhuj temple is a 16th century Hindu temple dedicated to Rama. The temple looks better from a distance than it does on the inside though. From far away, it’s easy to see the spires of the temple, with the tops of the tower resembling lotus. It was possible to visit the inside even in January and involves a steep climb up some not so solid looking steps. Inside there’s not much in the way of ornamentation, even though it seems to be a functioning temple as the temple there was open to the public. This temple is located pretty much in the centre of Orchha where all the shops and humans are. It’s not that big a place and you’ll like be in the area if coming in from Jhansi anyway.

Overall, not all that interesting and looks better outside than in.

The temple of Chaturbhuj lies next to RamRaja temple. One can keep car parked in RamRaja Temple parking and walk for 5 minutes to reach this temple.

The temple is said to be tallest temple in Orchha. One need to climb a set of staircase to reach main sanctum. The structure is good with some carving on outer side and pillars of temple.

You can get view of Entire Orchha, Chattris and Betwa river from this temple. There are few sweet shops and snacks outlet near this temple. The temple is less crowded as not all tourist visit here.

This temple is dedicated to the Four Arm Form of Lord Vishnu. Built by the king over 500 years ago atop a hill.
The temple is visible from everywhere in Orchha.
The temple is a prime example of Hindu architecture, engineering, ingenuity and devotion.
Glory to Lord Chaturbhuj!!

A 16th century temple which has been maintained somehow. It looks quite beautiful from outside but needs renovation from inside. The history of this temple is interesting where Lord Ram was worshipped as King Ram (perhaps the only place in India). Recommended time to visit is less than 30 mins.

The temple stands on a massive, stone plinth, itself a high rectangular building with a very simple exterior, ornamented on two major and four minor spires. The interior of the Chaturbhuj temple is devoid of carved ornaments. The great height of its ceiling is an unusual feature in a Hindu temple.

Ticket - Applicable when you will go to upper floors of The Temple, Also Ticket for photography for upper floor only

Must have- water bottles , if you will go to upper floors,

Must know- The stairs which goes to upper floors , are very narrow passage & the heights of the each stair is very high. It si difficult to come back from top floor to lower floor. If you have problem in legs or you will worried from suffocation then do not try to go the upper floors.

Chaturbhuj Temple is dedicated to "Lord Vishnu".
His life-size idol is kept in the sanctum sanctorum. It is exquisitely ornamented and is immediately visible.

Constructed on a high platform, long stairs lead to the main temple. The architecture of the temple is truly amazing as it resembles a multi-storeyed palace, with arched entrances, a main tower and is closed from all sides. The exterior is adorned with the lotus symbol and other symbols of religious importance; the interior of the quadrangle temple is devoid of carved ornaments.

The ornamental , seamless patterns carving with gematrical & floral shapes on the High peaks / spire , shaped like pine cone, These are placed on the top most floor roof area on the Chaturbhuj Temple

The best thing i liked about the place was that it gives one 360 degree views of orchha. The chaturbhuj temple being right in the center of orchha; help you get a good orientation of orchha.A lot of steep steps need to be climbed though to get to the terrace. some staircases might need a torch.

There are old temples like Angkor Wat and Meenakshi Amman in Madurai, where much study has already been done about temples as repositories of knowledge, especially the time space arc engineering and observatory aspects especially in context with astronomy and navigation.

So here's what - head for the main hall under the big dome at the Chaturbhuj Temple on the left of the RamaRajya tempe in Orchha. Take your smart phone out, recalibrate the compass, and then set it down on the ground in the exact middle under the big dome. Check what you see?

True NESW is what comes up. Not magnetic, polar or anything else - True Cardinal points.

Now look along the four main cardinal points from under the dome and check what you see neatly aligned.

Then try to explain to yourself how a temple built 5-6 centuries ago got True North and cardinal points of the compass correct to the second decimal point of a degree at a time in history when magnetic North was not fully understood in the rest of the world.

If you're with me so far, now try to envisage the 7 domes or spires on top of this old temple, and figure out why in an otherwise symettrical construction, there is so much variation in height, diameter and angle of spire. Then revisit astronomy 101 and check out the 3+2+2 on the Belt of Orion as it marches across East to West every night.

Spend time at Chaturbhuj and if you have the basics of celestial navigation, as I do because that's what I was trained in as a seafarer way back when, then you suddenly start seeing a lot of stuff falling into place.

I'm going on a second visit to figure out some more.

The temple attracts lot of devotees from across the country. The architecture is mind blowing and designs carved in the stone are quite intricate. The temple also has a Bhul-bhulaiya which is climbing 4 floors through precarious staircase. The guide don't tell about the risks. One must use discretion to avoid any uncalled for situation.

Built upon a massive stone platform and reached by a steep flight of steps, the temple was specially constructed to enshrine the image of Rama that remained in the Ram Raja Temple.

There is a hidden stairs to the roof from the right side inside the temple, find it for a view of the entire area. Though it may be locked but then look out for the young keyholder ( He is Special Child with Ear n Tongue). Assure him that you would pay him, he eould unlock the door to the hidden stairs and take you up and show you around which he supposed to do for free.
