This is much hyped attraction which is poorly maintained. The jungle safari is a complete waste of money. The few animals that have been kept in open cages have not been looked after well. Do not go there expecting to see wildlife. The only significant attraction is the bicycles that are available on a nominal rent that you can cycle from one end to the other early morning , enjoying the nice breeze from the lake.

It's best to visit Van Vihar around 4 pm in the evening. You will catch a lot of animals. You can easily spot deers such as barasingha, black buck, cheetal etc. grazing in the hill or down by the lake. Langoors are almost everywhere. Occasionally you can spot a wild boar on or around the main road. Plenty of birds to see as well. The best part is the western lights falling onto the hill as the sun sets into the lake. The whole scenery is just beautifully serene and calming. Plenty of carnivores as well to see which are kept in secluded large enclosures according to their breed. Its a very safe and fun place to visit with friends, family and small kids.

It was our brief visit to bhopal with special attention to sanchi, udaigiri and bhimbetka. Both places enlightened us about the Ashoka period and influence of Buddha on him. Along the route we crossed tropic of cancer that overjoyed us. Bhimbetka also gave glimpse of early life when people use to spend life in caves. Very beautifully they described their lifestyle through paintings that i feet still inspiring tribal art and craft. Udaigiri was equally important and informative.
Besides we also visited local Bhopal particularly the lake area and the van vihar park. Vanvihar is good place for animal as well as birds lover. we enjoyed a lot. Many species of birds we could watch since water body on the one side and land area on other side provides opportunity to watch all sorts of wild fauna.
So i will recommend everyone to visit these places and make at least two to three days plan. One day to udaigiri, sanchi, other day to bhimbetka and bhojpur and one day local in van vihar and related places. Due to lack of time i couldnot make to bhojpur.

I found this to be a very underrated place to see both animals and birds. The fee is nominal & you get to enter either by foot or by bicycle. My suggestion would be to go by foot to get the complete experience. With animals on the left & birds on the right (in the lakeside), you would get to see a variety of species. From a well fed white tiger to your regular tiger. Grizzly bears (i actually saw one hugging a tree),a lion, a lioness, deers, turtles in the lake, a kingfisher, a tailor bird (busy digging through the bark of a tree) which is a complete photographers paradise, etc etc. There are grills on both sides for safety. There is even a board put up which names and describes which all birds are there with a picture for your reference. The only downfall is that the sanctuary is too vast to be covered by foot (as in my case).In that case one can use the bicycle, but i would still suggest going by foot );

Located on the lake side of the Shamla Hills is this unique small wild life sanctuary. The place is gives a unique up-close to nature... its a nice quite drive with the lake on one side and bushy forest on the other. In the winters and rains you can sight a fairly large variety of ducks and water birds in the lake and some herbivores in the forest. The deer are left in the open areas so one can encounter them while driving about. All the big cats, jackals, Bears crocks etc are in large open enclosures. There is also a small snake farm where one can sight a fairly large number of local snakes.
One can even take a small safari into the forest and up the mountain and also rent a bicycle and enjoy a leassurly cycle ride inside on the main road. as the animals are all not caged sighting is dependent on luck which ads to the uniqueness of this place and makes the experience a little more real..
Its a lovely way to spend time in the midst of nature see animals up-close.

An enjoyable mini safari. One can hire bicycles or take your own car or even an auto to take a tour of the 5km tour. We took a tour on a golf cart for a3 of us at a cost of Rs. 120. We could spot white tiger, bear, lion, jackals, deer, and star turtles. It's close to Shyamala hills and post the tour one can enjoy a walk near the lakeside which is picturesque, and also the tribal museum which is in the vicinity.

The area is vast almost 5km but has only few enclosures majorly - Crocodiles , snakes , bear , lion, turtle , leopard , deers and birds

I would recommend not walking as it is more tiring and less rewarding, they have a option of renting a bicycle which is the cheapest option possible

The ticket per individual is 20/- only . Dnt ever take the electric cart it costs around 300/- and u will repent it later .

If you generally have ample time and love to walk and be around nature then u might like this spot

A nice peaceful lakeside Animal park. It is a great place to visit if you are visiting Bhopal. Good place for kids as they get to see wild animals. It is not like a zoo but there are larger places and natural surroundings for Tigers, Bear, Crocodile etc. Best time to visit is near Sunset as you get a beautiful view of the Upper lake.

Van vihar has two entry points. Entry for a couple along with a car was Rs. 250/-. The drive from one end to other is good 6 km. It's better to vis the place on a car or hire a auto/ electric veh. There are even options to hire bicycles at the gate, which is very good. Inside the park the carnivorous animals i.e Bears, Lions, Tigers, Fox & Leopard are kept in open enclosures with deep pits & high fences. The herbivores are kept without any enclosure in the park. There is also a snake park inside, which has a main attraction - The Indian Python. I could not spot the White Tiger in its enclosure. The park also offers night Safari & meals too. Adequate food canteens are available inside Van Vihar. The drive along the lake is also great. Should plan to visit in the evening or morning time. A must visit place especially with small children.

The park gets closed by 6:30pm. We have visited on 6th August by cab. we planned to hire golf cart but we didn't get as they have very limited golf carts . Finally the guard arranged auto for us as we are 6 person.
The park has cycle facilities too or else you can go inside by your own four/two wheeler... for all these you need to pay separate charges apart from entry tickets.
