At Bhimbetka do hire a guide and before you go do some self study as well. One has to stop at a rail crossing around 2km away from bhimbetka....it was through the window of one train running on this rail that one gentleman, an archaeologist, saw the magnificent rocks, had a gut feeling, and Bhimbetka was discovered. There are rock... More

The rock shelters if Bhimbetka are a world heritage site near Bhopal. Situated bout 40 kms away from the MP capital, one has to drive past the town of Obaidullaganj on the busy National Highway, to reach this place. The Rock shelters are situated close to the railway lines and within the Ratapani wild life sanctuary. As the story goes,... More

We visited here with private car(3000Rs, include Sanchi) arranged by our Hotel Grand Ashirwad. Departing at 8:30AM, the busy 40km paved road was through a wheat growing plain full of tractors, motorcycles, trucks, and buses. 7km after Obaidullaganj, we turned south on a rural paved lane, crossed double rail tracks, and proceeded uphill for 3km to the gated entrance. At... More

A Spectacular sight, a natural phenomenon, unspoiled and a must see, thousands of years old and yet the paintings are pretty clear. A pleasure to visit too not crowded and no touts or hawkers.

The Bhimbetka rock shelters are an archaeological site of the Paleolithic, exhibiting the earliest traces of human life on the Indian subcontinent, and thus the beginning of the South Asian Stone Age.

It is pre-historic and perhaps the oldest discovered habitation in India. It places the country as one where human settlement began. There might have been other undiscovered places where earliest people lived but this Bhimbetka is a proven place. Just about 60 kilometers away from Bhopal city, the rock shelters are lively as there are numerous paintings done by earliest... More
