- Abhinav Choudhry2 contributionsMust visit archaeological siteSanchi has a rich history with the Ashoka's best stupa located here. The site has been beautifully restored and there is even a museum that documents the restoration process with pictures from a century back. The site is huge and there are old Buddhist monuments from the time of the Mauryan emperor Ashoka. Anyone with an interest in history will love it but even others may enjoy the site as it is a very nice comfortable place to stroll as well. The entry fees are low and the evening light show is good even though the scheduling is a bit erratic at times.Visited February 2020Written October 23, 2020
- Jay-Raghu-2016Chennai (Madras), India36 contributionsUNESCO tagVisited after 33 years. Big change in the surroundings. The monuments are the same. Description of the monument has come up now with lawns. Those days about 3 or 4 decades back hardly anyone visited except on the weekends turning it into a picnic spot. Transportation wasn’t easy then. Entry ticket is 40 rupees and the counter is about a km before one can reach the monument area. Plenty of parking spots. Be prepared to walk to see and learn about the stupas. To cover it all, then keep ATLEAST 2 to 3 hours on hand. Clean toilets available close to a cafeteria. Worth a visit. Monuments well preserved.Visited January 2020Written March 17, 2020
- schandMohali District, India80 contributionsBetter than I had imaginedOne has grown up with images of the Sanchi Stupa and its easily identifiable gateways (Toranas) in History textbooks and tourism brochures. Finally I visited it in my seventieth year and it turned out to be much better than I had imagined. The site is on a hilltop. Once can drive close to it and then it is a gentle walk to the monument. My daughter, who is an art historian, was fascinated by the carvings on the four gates. The licensed guide was well-informed and helped us appreciate the monument better. The lawns around the monument are well-maintained and clean. A bonus was a small but significant temple from the Gupta era, claimed to be the oldest in India.Visited July 2022Written July 17, 2022
- Ashvin ParekhMumbai, India68 contributionsAn excellent experience of India”s heritage less explored so far.The monument is an excellent representation of the indian rich heritage and civilisation. Built almost 2300 years ago, it shows the viewer the cultural and economic supremacy India enjoyed. The stupa is an amazing piece of architectural heritage, with vast circular gallery and pieces of fine quality sculptures. It is recommended that you take a guide to walk you through the work and narrate the history behind the monument.Visited March 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten March 10, 2022

It reminded me of the temple of Diana at Sounion in Greece The guide affirmed it was Greek in design . There used to be a statue of the Budha placed on a pedestal . A group of monuments dedicated to lord Buddha. There are three Stupas and temples and monasteries. The main Stupa has the relics of Lord Buddha's bones and was the first Stupa to be constructed by Emperor Ashoka. Words cannot describe the beauty of the work done on the gate. Be sure to hire a certified guide who can tell you about the gates in detail.
Best to visit the monument in the morning or at 3pm. You need about 1-2 hours based on level of interest.
Toilet facilities are not so good

We visited the Sanchi Archaeological site with family, and spent a few hours over there. The site is very well maintained by ASI, and you'll definitely get a very calm and quiet environment. Must visit for all age groups to have a chance to get a closer embrace with our glorious history!

Hello, I was wondering what would be the best way to travel from Bhopal to Sanchi. I would also like to go to Bhimbetka if possible, but I have just 4 days in all to cover all this. Is it possible?

Bhopal to Sanchi is a one hour ride in a car. Depending on how many are travelling will be the cost per head - Bhimbetka is also not very far and you can also stop over at Ratapani - which is a wildlife reserve - all within an hour of each other. For food though - Bhopal is the best option as you get a lot of variety.
