A wonderfully designed stepped tank and thus a must visit when you are in Hampi. The pathways created to bring the water to the tank are wonderful as well. However, the security does not allow to enter this tank. We have to watch only from the sides of the tank.

My first visit to a stepwell, this one being in the Royal Enclosure of Hampi. Also, first time seeing a medieval-style aqueduct in India.

The practicality of the system and the symmetrical design of the stepwell makes it one of the wonders of ancient India.

Amazing India architecture depicts its story via this beautiful marvel at the royal enclosure excavation site ... definitely worth an Insta Profile pic! Do note the steps has numbers engraved because of which visitors are not allowed to go down on the steps.

Marvelous water pipe filling system still there.

The stepped tank is a structure used to hold water with decorative, triangle shaped steps arranged symmetrically around the tank that would’ve taken people down to the water level. It’s original purpose was unknown, although it’s proposed that the tank was originally used for water sports.

A very photogenic structure.

Stepped tank is a must see place in the Vijayangar ruins. Considering this has been built several centuries ago, it is definitely an example of mathematical accuracy in calculations to get a perfectly symmetrical architecture.

Well known as Stepped tank. Symmetry with which set of steps descending into the water source
on all four side is built, is quite amazing. Entry inside the tank is not allowed; there is a
guard who will whistle if you try to do so. Must see attraction in Hampi.

I repeat my self here... Thru the numerous ruins uncovered, and I’m sure many are yet to unravel or permanently lost, we can hardly imagine the complete story of Hampi & Vijayanagara.

ASI have done wonderful job in excavating and restoring this Stepped Tank. We can understand the extent of work only when we see the pre & post photographs in the museum.

Whole administrative complex is worth studying in details, take help of a good guide, and he will share stories about Stepped Tank and all the wonderful structures around it.

The stepped tank was apparently excavated in-situ and makes us wonder about the extraordinary times 500-600 years ago.

The stepped wells or tanks must have been important gathering places when the Vijaynagar empire was in it's full glory. Now it has been expertly restored. One can imagine their importance in the barren area. The tank was bone dry in March 2018 due to which the geometrical symmetry could be easily seen.
