This is an absolute must-see for anyone visiting McLeod Ganj or Dharamshala. Even more so if you are planning to visit the Dalai Lama — you cannot fully appreciate him or his role without understanding the context of Tibet that is provided at this museum.
The museum is deeply moving, telling the story of the little-known, modern Holocaust that is still being endured by the Tibetan people today. It, too, tells the story of a vibrant culture and a deeply resilient people who refuse to be erased — a story that foreigners must share around the world, to give voice to a people from whom theirs have been taken.
Humble on the exterior, this museum is world-class on the interior. It is not just still images with walls of text. There are interactive displays, tons of real artifacts, video documentaries, and all kinds of other dynamic things that bring the untold story of the Tibetan people to life. It is also organized in a very intuitive manner, covering topics ranging from historical dynasties to Buddhism to the role of the Dalai Lama. It is not just all about China invading Tibet; there is so much more to Tibet that this museum unveils.
I thought I would be there for two hours max, and I ended up staying for five. If you are visiting the area, in my opinion, your trip is incomplete without a half a day dedicated to this place. The understanding it gives one of Tibet will add invaluable richness and contextual appreciation for all the rest that Dharamshala has to offer.

The museum is wonderful, no doubt about it. But they didn’t want to let us into the toilet. They sent us to look for local cafes, which turned out to be closed. It's sad, though!!! We returned back to the museum and already demanded to be let into the toilet. Oh, miracle!!! They let us through. That's why four stars, not five. We appeal to the museum management: make the toilet accessible to all visitors who sympathize with the Tibetan people 😉😊

Walked the 2km down during free afternoon section of small group tour, taking a taxi back!!!
Is in a small village of Tibetan houses(I walked through from the back!) and a Temple.
Could not find a toilet, there was supposed to be one outside but could not find it!!
20 rupee entry.
Only opened in 2022.Is very user - friendly layout with clear labelling,in Tibetan and English ,short videos .
Is in two distinct sections..historical and geographical history of Tibet ,royalty, religion. and so on.
The other part, across the hallway ,is" I am Tibetan.", featuring the Diaspora and modern interpretaions.
I did not allow sufficient time.Needs 2/3 hours.

The museum shows the complete history and geography of Tibet and what all the atrocities the citizens went through. Must visit for all those interested in tibetology. Bang in the Dalai Lama temple complex.

Really worthwhile, you can soak in the whole exhibit within 30-40 minutes, or stay longer and watch a documentary related to Tibet's culture and history at 11am or 3pm (the topics vary from day to day; be sure to verify timings when you're there) for a 10 Rs entrance fee.

Definitely stop by at this place on your way to the Dalai Lama temple. Also highly recommend toy watch the documentary. If was an eye opener about how badly China is treating the Tibetian people and almost wiping out their culture. Costs just INR 10.

museum is supposed to present a complete picture of country/ region. Here was only sufferings, problems. I have been to tibet and its a beautiful place, with many tourists visiting every year. There may be things to be happy about then why only project one issue of freedom, in outside country as if there is nothing to life in tibet than political freedom?

The museum gave thorough insights on the tragedies taking place in Tibet. There were helpful banners around that described the sceneries so well and gave factual knowledge of the atrocities. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is planning a visit. We were disappointed that we couldn't see the documentary so be sure that you come when it is playing.
