- Kapil SoodBengaluru, India413 contributionsMust visit when in DharamshalaVery serene environment, excellent Darshans of Buddha and a place to spend some time. It's very well maintained, clean and organised. Also happy to see that they do not put restrictions on cameras etc. Also, there is no specific dress code for visiting this place. The approach however is through narrow streets. While we had driven down to McLeod Ganj all the way from Bangalore but within McLeod Ganj we hired a cab for the day because finding a parking is next to impossible and also the streets are very narrow. Near this temple complex I did see a multi storied car parking but not sure if it's open for general public.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 21, 2024
- David WMumbai, India143 contributionsA Fun Getaway in the HillsMy friend and I had a fun weekend in Dharamshala in June, 2024. We stayed in McLeod Ganj in an AirBNB not far from the main chowk. We split our time between gift shopping, sightseeing, and eating. At 2000 metres, the air was a bit tin. The narrow lanes were often steep, so we got a workout just walking around. The prices were very affordable. The shopkeepers were quite friendly and pleasant to deal with whether or not we ended up buying anything. Shopping wise, I'd like to give special praise to Naseer at Arts & Craft Jewelry. I also got an expert deep tissue massage from Prashant at Himalayan Wellness. we picked up a few odds and ends from the stalls along the roadside. We got some good bargains on handmade clothes at the Tibetan Handicrafts market across from the Dalai Lama Temple. We tried a variety of Tibetan foods. We enjoyed our meal at Tibet Kitchen the most. Jimmy's Italian Kitchen had a surprising variety of Italian dishes, but my sense was that all of them were localized to some extend for Indian tastes which are spicier than Italian tastes. We did little sightseeing in McLoeod Ganj, but on our way back down the mountain among the hairpin turns and scenic views, we stopped to see the lovely cricket stadium and the Norbulingka Tibetan Culture Centre with its exquisite Losel collection of dolls and other handicrafts. Our weekend in Dharamshala proved to be a lovely, relaxing getaway in a clean, somewhat cool hill station with a relaxed pace but enough to do to stay busy. I recommend the town if you're looking for a getaway in Northern India.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 15, 2024

It is a 15 minute walk from the main square… and if you are of a religious bent of mind , then you must not miss going there. Very neat and clean complex … you need to take off your shoes before you enter the main temple… fortunately there was no rush , so one could go in and sit in the temple and absorb the peaceful energies of the place Cameras and phones are allowed… very very peaceful!!Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 7, 2024

Situated in the middle of a busy narrow street, this temple has peace of mind to offer. Compound is really calm and soothing. Connectivity is good. Also place is surrounded by fabulous cafes.

The monastery is at a height. Has become popular because His Holiness Dalai Lama stays here. The tere are many steps to climb. I saw a lift but not sure if it’s operational. You must try and visit when the prayers or mainly the debates are going on. I think the debates are in the evening from 4-5 pm.

An excellent trip. We went in October, a good month in terms of weather. We able to attend prayer sessions with HH Dalai Lama. Very nice walks in the morning (circumambulation path) around the temple. Dharamsala is somewhere we'll return to, has a special spirit.

I got up very early and joined the monks (as an observer) while they finished breakfast and did morning prayers. Stroll down Temple road, clear security and go up sit on the platform as the day gets underway. Explore the Temple, walk past the prayer wheels and watch the buzz. I made a donation outside the Temple after I left. You can then follow the road around the perimeter. I had a arranged to meet the Dalai Lama on one of my trips which was a wonderful experience. Bear in mind that this is in McLeod Ganj above Dharamshala.

Abode of his Holiness Dalai Lama situated in the middle of Macloadganj . Big temple and in case you are lucky you get to attend Dalai Lama’s address. Very serene and blessed place. You can sit for hours to meditation. You can reach this temple by your vehicle or cab. Parking available just outside but heavily crowded. You can also reach this place by skyway cable car from Dharamsala. Totally calm and quiet place in the mid of pine trees . Photographers delight and must visit place.

The most popular with place to visit in McLeod Ganj. Excellent Darshan with no touts. Very busy with lots of crowds. Both lifts were not working and the ramp was very steep and was relatively disabled unfriendly. Wheelchair available. Lots of monks were praying. Immediate parking around the area difficult. Small network of shops selling local goods.

Toured the complex and temple and apart from the overwhelming spirituality and tranquility of the place the views are fantastic. The town of McLeodganj is very compact with very narrow streets lined with shops (similar to some towns in Italy). Great place for rest and reflection even if one is not religiously inclined.

I will be staying at the monastery for a week.
Are there any precautions to take in advance regarding the food, water, vaccines? Any other guidelines for a first time traveler to India would be recommended.
thank you!

Yes Shots a good idea for immunity. Water only from bottles and please stock enough. There are shops near the monastery. Food you may take dry fruits and nuts which are high density items.

Hi,
I am planning to go to Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj in December 3 and 4th week. Can you please guide on the following:-
a) Please guide me in which locality in Dharamshala and in which locality in McLeod Ganj, I should take a hotel. Also, if you can recommend any good hotels in both the locations, that would be great.
b) From Google map, I understand that Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj are only 6 kms apart. If that is the case, can we stay at one of these places and commute to the other one for a day visit. Do we have some good mode of transport at reasonable price.
c) We are going for about 10 days trip and also planning to cover Dalhousie, so how many days we should give to Dharmashala, McLeod Ganj and Dalhousie.
Thanks.
