- Blake M1 contributionFantastic, Klein guided by an absolute legend of the mountainI wanted to climb Mt. Kenya… but I had both no particular experience and additionally had a very tight schedule. I chose Benson +254 722 427 782 And I could not have possibly made a more fortunate choice ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️ Benjoro was the most flexible ( able to take anywhere between a single traveler and a large group) ( willing to quickly shift dates for our convenience) These are the reasons that I initially chose him because it is so difficult to arrange these things from So Far Away. However, this is not why I am so absolutely pleased with the choice.!! in my opinion, there could’ve been no better guide. His companion, Joshua ( a sort of Godfather to Benson, ) is essentially legend on this mountain⚡️ There is essentially no one on the mountain, who does not know Joshua and his mini fantastic stories, and colorful exploits, or have not been touched by his kindness If you are thinking about pursuing this fantastic experience, I cannot recommend this team highly enough!!!!!! - Travel107918983951 contributionA trip to Mount Kenya super efficiently organized by Ben NjorogeMount Kenya Mount Kenya National Park Ben Njoroge Trip organizer I was very fortunate to have an amazing trip up Mount Kenya to Lenana Point, which is just under 5,000 mtrs. All very efficiently organized and supported by Ben Njoroge - The 5 days were unforgettable as we set off from Sirimon Gate, having had a great lunch to fuel us up the first 9km incline to Old Moses Hut. Equipment loaned to those who had traveled from the other side of the world. Or did not have sticks sleeping bags, or warm coats Back packs carried by an incredibly resilient, happy group of people..and I just had a small day pack with wet gear and packed snacks. Pace was catered for each individual on the hike so there was no pressure to keep up. Old Moses hut was our first night, very practical, plenty of bunks, clean and shower available (cold) water brrrr. Due to history of the deforestation no fires are now allowed in the huts. Supper cooked from fresh supplies of which there was plenty. The next day was a 14 hike, more challenging than Day 1's walk up the road. Vegetation changing the higher we hiked. Any birds, animals pointed out to us. The track easy to follow, with various ups and downs. Stopping for lunch, where there is a basic toilet...with a view. Night 2 and 3 in Shiptons Camp where Day 3 was a climitization day. Ben and team very aware of the importance of getting us acclimatized to the altitude, allowing us plenty of time to puff and pant up to new heights. Again food all fresh, fruit magicaly presented on the table, and no evidence of it being shaken around on the way up. Day 4 started at 0245 am with a wake up call, tea and snack. Then off with head lamp, moon shining, smattering of snow and silence. Up and up to Lenana in time to get there to watch the specular sun rise. Then setting off down to breakfast. That day is 27 kms, ending at Chagoria Gate...a long specular hike. Ben and his team sharing historical events that happened, and pointing out chameleons, snakes, birds and animals as we walked down. Near the end we walked through old an forest with plenty of Old Man's Beard on the trees, a particular reminder that there are still remnants of beautiful trees. Night 4 spent in a basic lodge. Again comfortable and good way to finish an amazing trip. Supper again very good having been carried from Day 1, and then back to Nanyuki where we started. Thank you Ben and Team. You kept us all safe, well fed and it's a trip I won't forget.Visited May 2023Traveled soloWritten October 13, 2023

Special thanks to our guide John and his crew Jackson, Joseph & Wilson who did a great job of organising the tour, accompanying us, preparing delicious food and always kept on smiling. We did Sirimon up and Chogoria down, especially the views while walkimg down werde extremly Motivation. Old Moses Camp and Shipton's Hut werde ok, but don't expect anything more than basic. - Wander453972944301 contributionWonderful experience with David in mtkenya.Hiking mount Kenya has been the best experience during the tour in East Africa.its the best one if you want to spend your private time, from the stunning views,to the less touristic places, bush flowers to gorges, and more. When I begun arranging the mountkenya hike, with: David Njuguna,(guide +254725545132) He assured me that I will definitely make it until to the summit which I haven't been into 4000m before, but assured me that people don't need to make because of how high they have been previous, all you need is slow walk, eat well and relax We had a great seasonal weather and no altitude sickness. David who has hiked more than a hundrends times, with mountkenya hikes tours is familiar and knowledgeable to every weather seasons.his service were beyond our expectations, from day 1, itinerary starting in chogoria route to the descent into sirimon route,to the cook, porter arrangements and every staff we needed. He is very supportive and eager to know what you may need. we are recommending his services without doubt!!Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 16, 2023
- Cosima C3 contributionsMount Kenya summit LenanaWe had a lovely time on our 4 day 3 night hike to mount kenya with our guide Michael and his team. The team took great care of us, when it comes to food (which was delicious and more than plenty), the hiking (they made sure to help us prevent altitude sickness as much as possible and explained a lot about the surroundings) and were just very lovely in general. All huts where we slept in were also very nice, especially the last one with a hot shower and private room! Would definitely recommend.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 13, 2023
- Izabela10 contributionsA Transformative Adventure with Daniel, Mount Kenya GuideMount Kenya is quite the hike, through stunning and ever-changing terrain we have tested not only our physical limits but also we have provided with mental and spiritual reset that only the mountains can offer. Views are breathtaking, the air is crisp and clean, the environment has only the sounds of nature – it created a perfect backdrop for a journey of self-discovery. Having the right people around you during such an expedition is crucial, and we were fortunate to have Dan and his team Daniel's team proved to be important element of our success and enjoyment throughout the expedition from our pick-up in Nairobi to the summit of Mount Kenya and back home. What sets Daniel apart is not just his knowledge and passion of Mount Kenya also his ability to connect with each individual on a personal level. His guidance, both mentally and physically, was crucial l in making the summit. - Alice B1 contributionFantastic hikeAbsolutely amazing hike! We did a 4 day trip, the Naro Moru route up, summited point Lenana early in the morning on the third day, and did the Chogoria route down with the last night camping at Lake Ellis. Had some incredible views from the summit and along the way, would highly recommend. We booked through High Peak Safaris through Peter Mburu, he was great and everything ran smoothly. Our guide Charles was fantastic, and the cook Peter and porters Naferty, Peter and Sammy made it such a great time.Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten January 20, 2024

- Maxime l1 contributionAmazing experience on Mont Kenya!John crafted us an amazing route plan and adapted very well to our wishes and suggestions. He was very responsive and helpful. Unfortunately, he was not able to guide us for logistics constraints but he put us in contact with an amazing guide. He arranged all the logistics to meet our budget constraints including 1 porter and 1 cook. We did a 5-day hike, with 1 day of acclimatization at Shipton camp. We went up by old mosses and went down by chogoria route. Breathtaking landscape. The food was amazing during the whole hike. Overall experience amazing. I really recommend John for this professionalism.Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 22, 2024
- Larry BCortez, Colorado2 contributionsKenya lifetime experienceWe spent almost a month with KG Mountain Expeditions going to most of the National Parks for wildlife viewing, sailing on a dhow to an island for camping on the beach swimming in the Ocean and so much more. We saw the "big five" animals numerous times and pretty much every other East African animal. KG makes the trips personal, doesn't do more than 4 people to the Land Rover, not squeezed in like sardines that we saw with other safaris. It was a trip of a lifetime thanks to KG Mountain Expeditions and I highly recommend them!!Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 6, 2024

Making it to the summit was such a highlight. Freezing cold but so exhilarating watching the sun come over the horizon, knowing you have succeeded.
John was patient, kind, supportive and very knowledgeable. He managed our walking pace carefully; very attentive to the needs of each individual.
One member of the party suffered from altitude sickness. In order to manage this, we had an acclimatisation day, spending 2 nights at Shipton’s Camp. This enabled us to climb to 4500m on day 3, in preparation for the summit the following morning. It worked!
John’s team ensured we were supported, well fed and watered along the route. John’s communication, at all times, was outstanding.
The scenery from Minto’s Camp to Chogorio is stunning as are the locations of all campsites particularly Shipton’s Camp.
I recommend you take your time and enjoy the incredible scenery - it might also help with acclimatisation. Prepare for the cold, particularly at night, ensuring you have a decent sleeping bag. Travel lightly. Also, don’t forget to add the cost of tips for the guide, porters and cook into your budget, as they certainly add to the cost.
Thanks to John for making this dream a reality.

I recently traveled to Kenya to visit the exchange student who lived with us a few years ago in the US. We travele with him around the country, and while the entire experience was incredible, I can unequivocally say that summiting Mount Kenya was a highlight. For anyone who loves mountains, this is an incredible trip. I had inititally looked into the bigger mountain to Kenya's south, and am so gla we chose Mt Kenya. Our guide, John Mukuruma Ndichu, was AMAZING! In addition to being extremely knowledgeable about the mountain, he is extremely warm and friendly, and he takes wonderful care of you from the moment you contact him to the time he returns you to your hotel when the trip is over, arranging everything and graciously accommodating your personal needs. He even scrounged up a warm coat and hat for one of my companions, who had not come fully prepared for the cold temperatures on the mountain (yes, it is cold up there!). John operates independently, and leads all of his own trips, so you are guaranteed to enjoy the same top notch experience that everyone else whose reviews you will find about him had. It also means his cost is very reasonable - less than the other outfits I researched. His support team is filled with equally warm an wonderful people. I was initially hesitant to go with an independent guide who was not affiliated with a touring company. If you have that concern, do not worry! John is two hundred percent reliable and respsonsive to your needs. You can't go wrong with him. So send John an email (mukuruma@yahoo.co.uk) or, even better, message him through WhatsApp (+254 720 559948).

I just finished hiking Mount Kenya with the organization Trek Mount Kenya run by Benson (Ben) Njoroge Nduba and it was one of the best experiences of my life. When choosing an organization, I read almost a hundred reviews trying to decide. I ended up choosing Ben because of his great reviews and as a smaller organization, I knew the money I paid was going directly to the guys who were with me on the mountain. I could not be happier with my choice.
I did the 5 day hike to Point Lenana, up Sirimon route and down Chogoria route. I’m glad I got to see 2 different routes as the landscapes were very different, and Chogoria was so beautiful! Choosing to do it in 5 days also meant that day 3 was an acclimation day at Shipton camp, which was very helpful in ensuring I did not get altitude sickness and made the summit easier the next day.
Along with Ben, I was lucky enough to have 3 great team members (Samuel Wambugu, Francis, and Samuel Theuri). The food Francis cooked was delicious, the conversation with the guys was fantastic, and my time on the mountain could not have been better spent. I also have to give shoutouts to Enock (who drove us to/from Nairobi) and Joshua (who is a dear friend, and teacher, of Ben and shared great stories as well).
If you are looking for not only a wonderful hike, but an experience filled with stories, culture and conversation, then I highly recommend you choose Ben and his team! You will leave the mountain feeling like part of a family!!
You can contact Ben at bennjoro2001@yahoo.com or search Trek Mount Kenya to get to his website. I promise you will not be disappointed if you choose Ben and his team :)

I have been looking at Mt Kenya each time a journey took me to the Northern parts of Kenya and really wanted to get to the top of it. I finally managed to climb it in March 2020. By climbing I really mean climbing to its true peak, Batian at 5199m. For this I engaged the services of the highly recommended team from African Ascent based in Nanyuki. They made the trek from Chogoria gate to Austrian hut via Lenana extremely comfortable so that I was able to truly enjoy the amazing landscape which changes from bamboo to alpine forest, moors and then to volcanic lunar dreamscapes. We took it "pole pole", trekking for 4 days and sleeping each night at higher altitude before the summit day. African Ascent has very good equipment and are an extremely friendly team (all 16 of them!). Not to mention providing plenty of very tasty freshly prepared food too!
For the actual climbing part via Batian and the SE ridge route I was in the safe hands of David the squad leader of the Mount Kenya Rescue Service who was contracted in by African Ascent as technical climbing guide (as far as I understand this is common practice amongst the various providers of Mt Kenya climbing experiences). If you have done some Alpine climbing and mountaineering this part will feel familiar with all the usual fun and struggle: the weather is just as unpredictable, the ropes easily get caught on the abseils, a traverse (through the Gates of Mist) can feel a little awkward and reaching the summit always feels great. You could be anywhere in the mountains but you just happen to be on the second highest one in Africa.
We walked off the mountain via the Naro Maru route which is amazingly beautiful and offers fabulous views but gets slightly spoilt by having to descend through the "hanging bog". For most of the 6 hours or so it took it was just me and the two trekking guides; the porters had disappeared downhill out of sight so fast that I would have had to run to keep up with them. As this was at the very end of the climbing season we met nobody during that day apart from a team of porters carrying up supplies for the Mountain Rescue Service. As a matter of fact during the entire trip we encountered very few trekkers and never had to share a campsite with another team.
It is best to do a lot of research and read in detail about all the various approach routes, trekking and camping options to find the one that suits you best. Outfits like African Ascents offer tailor-made, rather comfortable and very safe treks. It does come at a price but for me it was money well spent. For a trek just up Lenana I think I would choose a more low key, less pricey option.

I just finished an incredible tour up to Kenya’s highest peak with the help of Ben, Joshua and their team. It is thanks to them that what would otherwise have been a very difficult journey was smooth an easy and allowed me to reach the summit. He was always immediate to respond to my multiple emails on preparations for the trip and had everything arranged accordingly.
I can not speak highly enough of Ben’s devotion to his clients and his care to make sure everything goes well. If you are looking to trek Mt Kenya or safari in Kenya or northern Tanzania I would highly recommend contacting him.

I wish to thank Ahambi Tours for the exciting Mt kenya climbing tour they arranged and facilitated for me and my family during last month December 2019 holidays, from the enquiries via email correspondence, their warm reception and detailed informative briefing of the expectations of the actual hike, every bit of their engagement was very professional and timely as well.. not to mention the exemplary services offered by the guides, potters and the chef.. the lunch meal was super sumptous!.. We are definitely returning for a repeat of this in the near future possibly in July 2020!

Embarking on Mt. Kenya hike through the Naro Moru route and descending via Chogoria was a whirlwind of exhilaration and tranquillity that left an indelible mark on my soul. This epic journey, where I summited Point Lenana within a day, followed by a captivating another-day descent, was an adventure that surpassed all expectations. Eric (Gileric Tours) his contact +254703952195, was the best organizer, and facilitator of the tour. He knew when to acclimatize and was prepared with a first Aid kit and guided us to the summit. I highly recommend you choose this guy.
The Naro Moru route offered an intense but rewarding challenge. Starting off early, the steep ascent demanded both mental grit and physical stamina. I conquered the 7-hour climb to Point Lenana with determination fueled by the spectacular vistas unfolding around me. The feeling of accomplishment upon reaching the summit was unparalleled; the sweeping panorama beneath the rising sun was a breathtaking reward for the effort invested.
The descent through the Chogoria route was a contrasting experience that allowed me to fully immerse myself in the mountain's diverse landscapes. The lush forests, glistening lakes, and pristine moorlands were a testament to nature's artistic prowess. The five-day journey down was a welcome opportunity to absorb the tranquillity and connect with the environment on a deeper level.
Throughout the expedition, the professionalism of the guides and the support team was invaluable. Their local knowledge, guidance, and unwavering encouragement not only ensured our safety but also enriched the experience with their fascinating insights into the region's ecology, history, and culture.
Planning such an adventure can be daunting, which is why I recommend booking through +254703952195. The convenience of having a local contact to facilitate arrangements and provide insights adds an extra layer of assurance to your journey. Booking through this contact can help streamline the logistics and enhance the overall experience, allowing you to focus solely on soaking in the beauty of the mountain.

I travelled solo and arranged a hike with a local company called HIGH PEAK SAFARIS. The owner Peter Mburu took care of all the arrangements in detail, picked me up and arranged everything perfectly. My guide Robert was a great company, very caring, good pace maker. I felt so lucky to have chosen this company! Also had John who was cooking lovely meals and a supportive and always friendly porter Duncan. What a great team! I felt safe and taken care of. With regards for the hike I could not have asked for more. My guide had all the knowledge and was a great support for me managing the climb to the top.

we had a very enjoyable time with David from mountkenya hikes tours,we didint have any information regarding which route to consider to hike mountkenya, but the guide suggested us the chogoria side of the mountkenya,of which with all the helpful information we decided to go through, this route is the best for the hikers who really want to see the lakes, forest, and and ambience, with the best scenic sourounding.
our food was very delicious like a five star hotel, and the cook was john,he made sure that there was something on the table, the porter which i can not mention them each participated in carryng our back packs, they made us summit fr their effort, and lastly very lucky to have the best view at the summit, which was very successful.we would like to recommend David (njugunad2050@gmail.com) for playing the mostpart in being our guide.

I am looking to summit Mt Kenya without having to pay the fees that these companies charge. I am an experienced trekker and will only need one guide. Can anyone help?

Hi! They have quotations on their website.
SIRIMON – CHOGORIA (6 DAY) gotomountkenya is their website name.
1150 for 1 passenger.
980 for 2.
I took 7 days trip, similar to this one, it’s around 1200USD. With 1 guide, 1 porter, 1 chief. I camp whole trip, which is really nice to camp there completely alone in the Nature. Hope this information is useful for you.

I’m planning a trip over to Kenya & plan to climb MK (Lanana route).I keep seeing on here 5 days for the hike but time isn’t on my side, can this be done (safely) in a shorter time. Also any recommendations for companies or independent guides.
Thanks in advance

apologies I know this is a little late but may help another traveller in the future, I have climbed it twice both times taking two days.... set off from old Moses camp in the morning, stay at camp over night, up at 2-3 to summit for sun rise then hike down on the same day... you will be exhausted but it is very achievable, 3 days would be idea in my opinion!

Has anyone climbed Mount Kenya in August? What’s the weather like. I am going this year and want to know if I need to carry heavy winter clothes?
Written January 29, 2018
You need to bring warm clothes, it is very cold in the mountains and NO heating in the cabins. So make sure to bring warm winter clothes included wool! Have a nice trip 😊I was there in the end of june, and it was ice on the ground and in the mountains...

How steep and precarious is the final climb of Mt Kenya's Point Lenana? I get a bit scared on steep or icy slopes with sheer drop-offs. I would be going in January or February. Could anyone share their experience, or recommend any photos or videos of the final stretch? Thanks!

HI!
Not too steep or precarious. It is certainly not easy, especialy at that altitude, but it does not seem dangerous. The last bit is tougher then the rest, but it has a metel wire to help up the steep bits. I have a slight fear of hights, and I felt fine up there, especially with the wire to hold on to whenever I felt queasy.
It is VERY cold up there.

How long will it take to trek to Point lenana? I'm travelling with my parents and don't want something strenuous. Any recommendations on what we can do once we reach Mt. Kenya will be really helpful. THanks :)

It depends where you are starting (entering the park). From Sirimon it is recommended that you summit the earliest on the second morning (so have slept two nights and walked two days inside the park) due to the acclimatisation. It is not an easy climb if you have not been in high altitude and you are in a hurry so it is better to go slowly (the third morning summit).
By Nanyuki MtKenya Safari clu tehre is the animal orphanage with the rare bongos. Southern side (Mountain LOdge) there are plenty of other wildlife too.

How far Mount kenya from Nairobi. Can we get private vehical on rent
Written April 2, 2017
Mount Kenya is about 180km from Nairobi (all good tarmac road). It depends which part of the mountain you are intending to go. You can rent a car with a driver or just a car, whichever you feel like. If you are not familiar with the left side traffic it might be a good idea to hire the car with a driver. If you need contacts just let me know.
