My daughter (26) and I (63) had a fantastic experience with Ben and his team climbing Point Lenana via the Choguria up, Sirimon down route and would not hesitate to recommend them for anyone considering climbing Mount Kenya, Mount Meru, Mount Killimanjaro or going on a safari.
Totally professional from start to finish, but with the warmth and caring of a family, Ben, Joshua, Samuel, Samuel, David and Tairus were without exception a delight to be with.
Ben was really lovely from our first email contact and very rapid and thorough when answering any queries.
We felt extremely safe and very well cared for the entire time and really enjoyed Ben's and Joshua's company throughout the trek. All the small touches like hot water, soap and a towel provided to wash before every meal and bottomless tea and coffee were very thoughtful and much appreciated. The meals were really tasty and we enjoyed camping in the more secluded places that we had asked Ben to find.
The pace set each day was perfectly suited to us and enabled us to successfully summit at sunrise as planned.
We could not have asked for a better experience and will definitely book through Ben for any future treks or safaris in Kenya, Tanzania and anywhere else that Ben can cover!

We had a Beutiful and safe Trek up to Point Lenana on Mount Kenya with Kennedy Mutuma see him on the first photo the far left, The pace was not forced at all and the food was awesome. we trekked for 4 days (3 nights) up via Chogoria route and down via sirimon route, our guide Kennedy and his Team of porters and chef's were excellent and professional, he knew all the names of the plants we found and every single bird on Mount Kenya. If you're looking for a budget trip without compromising the quality
of porters and services up Mount Kenya I would recommend him, You can find him on Facebook as Kennedy Mutuma or search his Facebook business page Wilderness Alternative Expedition, his WhatsApp Number Is +254743789655.

we had a very enjoyable time with David from mountkenya hikes tours,we didint have any information regarding which route to consider to hike mountkenya, but the guide suggested us the chogoria side of the mountkenya,of which with all the helpful information we decided to go through, this route is the best for the hikers who really want to see the lakes, forest, and and ambience, with the best scenic sourounding.
our food was very delicious like a five star hotel, and the cook was john,he made sure that there was something on the table, the porter which i can not mention them each participated in carryng our back packs, they made us summit fr their effort, and lastly very lucky to have the best view at the summit, which was very successful.we would like to recommend David (njugunad2050@gmail.com) for playing the mostpart in being our guide.

What a great trek we had up Mount Kenya with Ben and Joshua and their team! Going up Sirimon route and down Chogoria is an excellent advice, as both routes are beautiful and from Simpson hut it's the easiest, and a beuatiful, climb to Lenana top. Yes we reached the top!, thanks to the pace set by Joshua, a guide who basically lived his whole life at the mountain and even has a hill named after him. Ben took great care of all our needs and responds very well on email and WhatsApp, also to help you plan your trip.
We can highly recommend this team, get in touch with Ben Njoroge, bennjoro2001@yahoo.com or +254 722 427782

December 2019 was my first time climbing in high altitude and I chose my own country's mountain as a starter. My guide was John Mukuruma Ndichu who I met in Nairobi and travelled with to Nanyuki base town and up onto the mountain. The entire process was relatively smooth and organized showing ample of experience from the guide, porters and cooks. The expedition was well staffed and definitely an excellent expenditure of my funds to ensure my own success and enjoyment of the process.
John was very good at what he did, always ensuring that my safety, comfort and pleasure of the process was at the forefront of the adventure. The accommodations in the huts was also adequate and a welcome reprieve from the long, difficult but enjoyable treks. The support staff for the expedition were also very keen in making sure that our loads were safe and delivered as well as ensuring I was well hydrated and sustained with pretty decent meals and snacks. We started, summited, descended and back to Nairobi in 3 days
I would definitely recommend John Mukuruma as your mountain guide whether a novice like me or an expert climber.

I climbed up Chogoria route and down Sirimon over a 5 day hike. It was a bit tough on summit day but well worth it. It was beautiful up there and clear enough to see Kilimanjaro in the distance.

I went with local guides Ben and Joshua. Both were incredibly knowledgeable and knew what they were doing, and Joshua in particular has worked on the mountain for decades, helping build the huts on Sirimon. Makes for plenty of cool tales to entertain you at dinner! Their whole team was great - cooked delicious/different meals three times a day, were all very attentive and fun to be around. I felt very safe and comfortable in their hands. Couldn't recommend highly enough!

You can reach Ben on bennjoro2001@yahoo.com. You have to pay the money upfront so they can organise stuff for the trip, which feels scary, but its nothing to worry about!

I have been looking at Mt Kenya each time a journey took me to the Northern parts of Kenya and really wanted to get to the top of it. I finally managed to climb it in March 2020. By climbing I really mean climbing to its true peak, Batian at 5199m. For this I engaged the services of the highly recommended team from African Ascent based in Nanyuki. They made the trek from Chogoria gate to Austrian hut via Lenana extremely comfortable so that I was able to truly enjoy the amazing landscape which changes from bamboo to alpine forest, moors and then to volcanic lunar dreamscapes. We took it "pole pole", trekking for 4 days and sleeping each night at higher altitude before the summit day. African Ascent has very good equipment and are an extremely friendly team (all 16 of them!). Not to mention providing plenty of very tasty freshly prepared food too!

For the actual climbing part via Batian and the SE ridge route I was in the safe hands of David the squad leader of the Mount Kenya Rescue Service who was contracted in by African Ascent as technical climbing guide (as far as I understand this is common practice amongst the various providers of Mt Kenya climbing experiences). If you have done some Alpine climbing and mountaineering this part will feel familiar with all the usual fun and struggle: the weather is just as unpredictable, the ropes easily get caught on the abseils, a traverse (through the Gates of Mist) can feel a little awkward and reaching the summit always feels great. You could be anywhere in the mountains but you just happen to be on the second highest one in Africa.

We walked off the mountain via the Naro Maru route which is amazingly beautiful and offers fabulous views but gets slightly spoilt by having to descend through the "hanging bog". For most of the 6 hours or so it took it was just me and the two trekking guides; the porters had disappeared downhill out of sight so fast that I would have had to run to keep up with them. As this was at the very end of the climbing season we met nobody during that day apart from a team of porters carrying up supplies for the Mountain Rescue Service. As a matter of fact during the entire trip we encountered very few trekkers and never had to share a campsite with another team.

It is best to do a lot of research and read in detail about all the various approach routes, trekking and camping options to find the one that suits you best. Outfits like African Ascents offer tailor-made, rather comfortable and very safe treks. It does come at a price but for me it was money well spent. For a trek just up Lenana I think I would choose a more low key, less pricey option.

Making it to the summit was such a highlight. Freezing cold but so exhilarating watching the sun come over the horizon, knowing you have succeeded.

John was patient, kind, supportive and very knowledgeable. He managed our walking pace carefully; very attentive to the needs of each individual.

One member of the party suffered from altitude sickness. In order to manage this, we had an acclimatisation day, spending 2 nights at Shipton’s Camp. This enabled us to climb to 4500m on day 3, in preparation for the summit the following morning. It worked!

John’s team ensured we were supported, well fed and watered along the route. John’s communication, at all times, was outstanding.

The scenery from Minto’s Camp to Chogorio is stunning as are the locations of all campsites particularly Shipton’s Camp.

I recommend you take your time and enjoy the incredible scenery - it might also help with acclimatisation. Prepare for the cold, particularly at night, ensuring you have a decent sleeping bag. Travel lightly. Also, don’t forget to add the cost of tips for the guide, porters and cook into your budget, as they certainly add to the cost.

Thanks to John for making this dream a reality.
