- bettybl2018Berlin, Germany2 contributionsMount Kenya - never closer to the sunBy far the majority of hikers on Mount Kenya have their luggage and tent carried up the mountain by porters, and a cook prepares the meals. The three of us set off with backpacks and freeze-dried food. And with a great guide (you are not allowed to go without one since 2022): Joseph. In four days we went up the Naro Moru route to Point Lenana and back down the Chogoria route. Joseph not only knows the mountain and its three peaks, he is also knowledgeable about the flora and fauna, the land and the people. And he has angelic patience. We would go with him again and again. - Maxime l1 contributionAmazing experience on Mont Kenya!John crafted us an amazing route plan and adapted very well to our wishes and suggestions. He was very responsive and helpful. Unfortunately, he was not able to guide us for logistics constraints but he put us in contact with an amazing guide. He arranged all the logistics to meet our budget constraints including 1 porter and 1 cook. We did a 5-day hike, with 1 day of acclimatization at Shipton camp. We went up by old mosses and went down by chogoria route. Breathtaking landscape. The food was amazing during the whole hike. Overall experience amazing. I really recommend John for this professionalism.Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 22, 2024
- Larry BCortez, Colorado2 contributionsKenya lifetime experienceWe spent almost a month with KG Mountain Expeditions going to most of the National Parks for wildlife viewing, sailing on a dhow to an island for camping on the beach swimming in the Ocean and so much more. We saw the "big five" animals numerous times and pretty much every other East African animal. KG makes the trips personal, doesn't do more than 4 people to the Land Rover, not squeezed in like sardines that we saw with other safaris. It was a trip of a lifetime thanks to KG Mountain Expeditions and I highly recommend them!!Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 6, 2024

- jensen_traveler2 contributionsGreat Mt. Kenya trek with High Peak SafarisIn February 2024, I undertook the Mount Kenya trek to Point Lenana at 4,985 meters, with the support of High Peak Safaris, headed by Chief Guide Peter Mburu. The trek spanned five days and four nights, all camping, following the Chogoria route for ascent and the Sirimon route for descent. The natural beauty of the mountain, its scenic vistas, and the diverse vegetation all exceeded my expectations. High Peak Safaris meticulous planning and efficient execution, along with the dedicated team of five staff members including a guide, a cook, and porters, ensured a safe and comfortable trek. Furthermore, the quality of the food provided during the trek was exceptional. Additionally, it's important to consider that this trek demands a certain level of fitness, particularly during the final ascent to the summit (which we commenced at 2:40 am). The climb is strenuous, also taking into account the reduced oxygen levels at this altitude. However, with the guidance of my excellent guide, George, I followed the Swahili principle of "Pole pole," meaning "slowly, slowly” and successfully made it to the summit.Visited February 2024Traveled soloWritten March 10, 2024

Embarking on Mt. Kenya hike through the Naro Moru route and descending via Chogoria was a whirlwind of exhilaration and tranquillity that left an indelible mark on my soul. This epic journey, where I summited Point Lenana within a day, followed by a captivating another-day descent, was an adventure that surpassed all expectations. Eric (Gileric Tours) his contact +254703952195, was the best organizer, and facilitator of the tour. He knew when to acclimatize and was prepared with a first Aid kit and guided us to the summit. I highly recommend you choose this guy.
The Naro Moru route offered an intense but rewarding challenge. Starting off early, the steep ascent demanded both mental grit and physical stamina. I conquered the 7-hour climb to Point Lenana with determination fueled by the spectacular vistas unfolding around me. The feeling of accomplishment upon reaching the summit was unparalleled; the sweeping panorama beneath the rising sun was a breathtaking reward for the effort invested.
The descent through the Chogoria route was a contrasting experience that allowed me to fully immerse myself in the mountain's diverse landscapes. The lush forests, glistening lakes, and pristine moorlands were a testament to nature's artistic prowess. The five-day journey down was a welcome opportunity to absorb the tranquillity and connect with the environment on a deeper level.
Throughout the expedition, the professionalism of the guides and the support team was invaluable. Their local knowledge, guidance, and unwavering encouragement not only ensured our safety but also enriched the experience with their fascinating insights into the region's ecology, history, and culture.
Planning such an adventure can be daunting, which is why I recommend booking through +254703952195. The convenience of having a local contact to facilitate arrangements and provide insights adds an extra layer of assurance to your journey. Booking through this contact can help streamline the logistics and enhance the overall experience, allowing you to focus solely on soaking in the beauty of the mountain.

We hiked the Sirimon - Chogoria route and had an absolutely incredible time! This was largely down to our amazing guides/chef/porters who made the experience truly unforgettable, I can't recommend them enough. They always work together so you are going up with a close knit team rather than a group that is drawn together last minute through an agent.
Ben (+254722427782) (bennjoro2001@yahoo.com)
The hike itself is stunning as you move through the different vegetation zones from forest and heathland into the alpine zone. We did 4 days (acclimatisation day 3) which was great as we got to see a bit more of the mountain on the 3rd day rather than heading straight up for the summit. Going down the Chogoria route after the sunrise summit on day 4 was breathtakingly beautiful and kept us going as the fatigue crept in. The huts on the mountain are decent, bunk beds in a wooden building. Definitely a better option than camping. AHH and the food was unbelievable! Samuel cooks up a delicious feast every mealtime, performing genuine miracles on a stove at 4200m!

I had such an amazing experience with Ben, Joshua, Samuel and Tilus hiking Mt. Kenya that I chose to use these guys again to hike Mt. Elgon. Both trips were absolutely fantastic although Mt. Elgon is a very different type of trek so do your research.
It terms of experience, there are very few, if any, guides that have spent more time on Mt. Kenya than Joshua. He not only helped build the dorm houses at Old Moses and Shipton's camps back in the mid 80's (when there was 7 glaciers on the mountain), but he also lived at those campgrounds solo for months at a time and had to figure out his own food. Ask him, he has great stories.
The bottom line is that if you chose this group you will be going with great local people. Ben is super easy going and is very willing to accommodate. I am super into the plants and animals and I let Ben know. I learned a ton about the different plants and Joshua has an eye for spotting chameleons (I lost a candy bar on a 1st to spot chameleon bet, my fault, Joshua was nice enough to share).
I also brought a pack of travel dominoes with me and the group was eager to learn. We had a great time playing dominoes and I would recommend bring a set if you can although Tirus has his own set now and is becoming a formidable player.
I could go on and on about my amazing adventures with this group on Mount Kenya and Mt. Elgon but the true adventures are the ones that you experience yourself. If I am ever fortunate enough to make my way back to Kenya I will definitely be giving Ben a call. If you are considering trekking Mt. Kenya, Elgon, Kilimanjaro, Meru or any other hiking in the area I would recommend contacting Ben first. You will be happy you did!

Hiking mount Kenya has been the best experience during the tour in East Africa.its the best one if you want to spend your private time, from the stunning views,to the less touristic places, bush flowers to gorges, and more.
When I begun arranging the mountkenya hike, with:
David Njuguna,(guide +254725545132)
He assured me that I will definitely make it until to the summit which I haven't been into 4000m before, but assured me that people don't need to make because of how high they have been previous, all you need is slow walk, eat well and relax
We had a great seasonal weather and no altitude sickness.
David who has hiked more than a hundrends times, with mountkenya hikes tours is familiar and knowledgeable to every weather seasons.his service were beyond our expectations, from day 1, itinerary starting in chogoria route to the descent into sirimon route,to the cook, porter arrangements and every staff we needed.
He is very supportive and eager to know what you may need.
we are recommending his services without doubt!!

Mount Kenya
Mount Kenya National Park
Ben Njoroge Trip organizer
I was very fortunate to have an amazing trip up Mount Kenya to Lenana Point, which is just under 5,000 mtrs.
All very efficiently organized and supported by Ben Njoroge -
The 5 days were unforgettable as we set off from Sirimon Gate, having had a great lunch to fuel us up the first 9km incline to Old Moses Hut. Equipment loaned to those who had traveled from the other side of the world. Or did not have sticks sleeping bags, or warm coats
Back packs carried by an incredibly resilient, happy group of people..and I just had a small day pack with wet gear and packed snacks. Pace was catered for each individual on the hike so there was no pressure to keep up.
Old Moses hut was our first night, very practical, plenty of bunks, clean and shower available (cold) water brrrr. Due to history of the deforestation no fires are now allowed in the huts. Supper cooked from fresh supplies of which there was plenty.
The next day was a 14 hike, more challenging than Day 1's walk up the road. Vegetation changing the higher we hiked. Any birds, animals pointed out to us. The track easy to follow, with various ups and downs. Stopping for lunch, where there is a basic toilet...with a view.
Night 2 and 3 in Shiptons Camp where Day 3 was a climitization day.
Ben and team very aware of the importance of getting us acclimatized to the altitude, allowing us plenty of time to puff and pant up to new heights.
Again food all fresh, fruit magicaly presented on the table, and no evidence of it being shaken around on the way up.
Day 4 started at 0245 am with a wake up call, tea and snack. Then off with head lamp, moon shining, smattering of snow and silence. Up and up to Lenana in time to get there to watch the specular sun rise. Then setting off down to breakfast. That day is 27 kms, ending at Chagoria Gate...a long specular hike. Ben and his team sharing historical events that happened, and pointing out chameleons, snakes, birds and animals as we walked down. Near the end we walked through old an forest with plenty of Old Man's Beard on the trees, a particular reminder that there are still remnants of beautiful trees.
Night 4 spent in a basic lodge. Again comfortable and good way to finish an amazing trip. Supper again very good having been carried from Day 1, and then back to Nanyuki where we started.
Thank you Ben and Team. You kept us all safe, well fed and it's a trip I won't forget.

We had a fantastic experience on our tent trek to Point Lenana! It was our first time at such a high altitude, and the adventure of staying in the tent was simply unique. The organization by John Mukuruma Ndichu of Mount Kenya Guide (mountkenyaguide.com) was outstanding. Everything went smoothly, from the first contact to the last step of our tour.
We started from Chogoria and finally finished the tour towards Sirmion. Our team was just awesome: 5 dedicated and friendly people who took good care of us. A big thank you to everyone – we felt really spoiled!
Of particular note is Guide Jack, who led us safely to the summit of Point Lenana. George, the chef, spoiled us with delicious food despite the simple conditions. The 3 porters always made sure that our tent was set up and our material was well looked after.
The service and value for money are absolutely right here. We would definitely book through John again and can recommend this tent trek to anyone who wants to experience a unique adventure on Mount Kenya. Many thanks to the whole team – it was an unforgettable journey!

Only had a day at mt Kenya , hired a driver in Nairobi and left for the park at 4 am.
Weather report called for rain, but we decided to trust the travel agent and went any way. Thankfully we did, the weather held for most of the day and we got in an awesome hike from the Naro moru gate.
A couple things to be aware of.
1) they do not accept cash or credit cards at the gate, but you can use the Kenyan site to pay for the entrance fee online
2) they charge a different rate for locals verses foreigners,
3) even though we were only doing a short 3 hour hike we were required to hire a local guide
They were able to facilitate this at the time of entry
Overall it was an amazing hike and we will definitely come back to climb the mountain
And make sure we have our Kenyan ID with us

We had the pleasure of traveling for five days with our guides up and down Mount Kenya, reaching the Lenana summit at the crack of dawn on the third day and enjoying majestic views and a sense of accomplishment that is hard to match anywhere in the world. But our guides - John, Peter, Julius, Joseph, and Joseph - this review is for them as they made the experience absolutely amazing.

That much hiking that high up takes endurance and preparation. Their knowledge and skills on the mountain made the trip comfortable, and gave us the opportunity to take our time and enjoy every minute of this incredible part of Africa. John and his team cooked, set up camp, carried the heaviest portions of our luggage, set up our tents, monitored our health and happiness, and ensured we stayed true to our route and never missed a beautiful moment on the trail. All five of them were exceptionally kind and easy to talk to. Meals were great. The atmosphere they created was warm and laid back and fun. They’re good men who love the mountain and park they traverse so often, and it was a joy to see that they take as good of care of you as they do Mount Kenya itself. Walking slowly (polepole!) and steadily, staying nourished and hydrated, and embracing the hours on the trail away from the rest of the world, and this multi-day hike is fairly easy and a delight. One of us was not used to the altitude and still reached the summit, carefully encouraged and aided by John and his team. Be as prepared as you can be for hot sunny days of sweating on the trail as well as very cold nights at 4000+ meters up where the wind and ground are bitingly frigid. Struggling with something? These guides will do anything and everything possible to help. The trip was totally worth it.

I had an amazing experience hiking Mount Kenya with Peter (+254 722 687008) at High Peak Safaris! I was a solo traveler and did the 4-day Sirimon/Chogoria route. I was paired with a porter, a chef, and a guide - honestly I felt that I was so well taken care of despite being a solo traveler. Food was consistently delicious and I was very surprised by the variety of food the team managed to prepare with limited ingredients! I summited for the third day and it was the best view I had ever seen.
I highly recommend Peter because he is a local from the region - rest assured that your money will go back to the community directly. Because of his roots in the community, he was able to provide competitive pricing as compared to other tour operators. The local community has suffered a lot from COVID and I am glad to see that they are starting to recover now. I would definitely go back and do it again in the future!

The local community has suffered a lot from COVID and I am glad to see that they are starting to recover now. I would definitely go back and do it again in the future!

My cousin and I had an amazing experience with John Mukuruma Ndichu and his team during our 6 day trip with them. We did a safari in Samburu park and then hiked Mount Kenya during 4 days, starting at Sirimon gate and going down Chogoria. We contacted John a few months before our trip and he organised a custom plan according to what we said we wanted to do. Everything was organised very well, John and his team were very nice, punctual, and made sure we had everything we needed. The food provided during the trip was excellent and in very large quantities, we brought snacks and didn't need them! Overall we would heartily recommend John for a safari in Kenya or the Mount Kenya hike. His contact is +254720559948 (WhatsApp) and the website is mountkenyaguide.com

Hi! They have quotations on their website.
SIRIMON – CHOGORIA (6 DAY) gotomountkenya is their website name.
1150 for 1 passenger.
980 for 2.
I took 7 days trip, similar to this one, it’s around 1200USD. With 1 guide, 1 porter, 1 chief. I camp whole trip, which is really nice to camp there completely alone in the Nature. Hope this information is useful for you.

I’m planning a trip over to Kenya & plan to climb MK (Lanana route).I keep seeing on here 5 days for the hike but time isn’t on my side, can this be done (safely) in a shorter time. Also any recommendations for companies or independent guides.
Thanks in advance

apologies I know this is a little late but may help another traveller in the future, I have climbed it twice both times taking two days.... set off from old Moses camp in the morning, stay at camp over night, up at 2-3 to summit for sun rise then hike down on the same day... you will be exhausted but it is very achievable, 3 days would be idea in my opinion!

Has anyone climbed Mount Kenya in August? What’s the weather like. I am going this year and want to know if I need to carry heavy winter clothes?
Written January 29, 2018
You need to bring warm clothes, it is very cold in the mountains and NO heating in the cabins. So make sure to bring warm winter clothes included wool! Have a nice trip 😊I was there in the end of june, and it was ice on the ground and in the mountains...

How steep and precarious is the final climb of Mt Kenya's Point Lenana? I get a bit scared on steep or icy slopes with sheer drop-offs. I would be going in January or February. Could anyone share their experience, or recommend any photos or videos of the final stretch? Thanks!

HI!
Not too steep or precarious. It is certainly not easy, especialy at that altitude, but it does not seem dangerous. The last bit is tougher then the rest, but it has a metel wire to help up the steep bits. I have a slight fear of hights, and I felt fine up there, especially with the wire to hold on to whenever I felt queasy.
It is VERY cold up there.

How long will it take to trek to Point lenana? I'm travelling with my parents and don't want something strenuous. Any recommendations on what we can do once we reach Mt. Kenya will be really helpful. THanks :)

It depends where you are starting (entering the park). From Sirimon it is recommended that you summit the earliest on the second morning (so have slept two nights and walked two days inside the park) due to the acclimatisation. It is not an easy climb if you have not been in high altitude and you are in a hurry so it is better to go slowly (the third morning summit).
By Nanyuki MtKenya Safari clu tehre is the animal orphanage with the rare bongos. Southern side (Mountain LOdge) there are plenty of other wildlife too.

How far Mount kenya from Nairobi. Can we get private vehical on rent
Written April 2, 2017
Mount Kenya is about 180km from Nairobi (all good tarmac road). It depends which part of the mountain you are intending to go. You can rent a car with a driver or just a car, whichever you feel like. If you are not familiar with the left side traffic it might be a good idea to hire the car with a driver. If you need contacts just let me know.
