- Juliet DPhilippines52 contributionsBrief zoo peekBooked a klook tour. Comes with transport arrangements. Only snag was heavy rainfall which meant expressway was closed. We arrived with barely an hour left to closing time. No lunch yet, had to content ourselves with cookies from the shop. But nice to see penguins and polar bears. Tour was not maximized though we understand that the weather was not something that can be controlled.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 31, 2023
- StevenchewteongpengGeorge Town, Malaysia25 contributionsLively animals!!Amazing zoo with lively animals in every enclosure. The penguin walk is obviously the star attraction. There are many viewing areas to watch each enclosure, so you have a good chance of a great view despite the crowd.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 26, 2024
- Quang Kiet LeHo Chi Minh City, Vietnam1,165 contributionsInteresting zooAsahiyama Zoo is a must in Asahikawa. Easily approached by getting on bus No.41 or No.47 (note: SUICA and Pasmo are not accepted on Asahikawa buses). The zoo was not too large but still enough to explore in 1-2 hours. While the polar bears and penguins were definitely the stars, other animals (red pandas, hippo, tiger, etc) were really interesting to visit and watch them.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 1, 2024
- RvMDlShanghai, China444 contributionsnice place, we got to see most of the animals without waitingwell organized zoo, that is placed in a gentle uphill slope (if you start from the main/west gate) We got to see most of the animals, like the penguins, white polar bear, black bear, monkeys, orangutans, etc. it also has a petting zone where children can touch rabbits and guinea pigs. overall, a nice place for children to see animals. one thing, though, we did not like is the monkey indoor space. the floor looked terribly hard and - naturally, dirty - . we felt that was not good.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 1, 2024

Animals don’t seem to be happy:
Polar bear walking in a round of 4x4m
Deers in a 10x20m fence
Monkeys indoor showing clear signs of rashes/ skin problems, playing with their own feces
Floating bodies of dead mouses in the snake aquarium (the snake did not bother to eat the first, the keeper did not bother to through another mouse)
Signs/explanations written by hands (when existing)
Deers fence right next to the wolves fence,
This zoo is not showing any love toward animals.
A lot of infrastructure to be fixed, maintain.
I gave it 2 stars because the entrance fee was very very low. I paid peanuts... got monkeys... I stayed 1hr with the kids and left for the snow slots nearby. Did not bother taking pictures. Felt sad and upset when I left this place.

Asahiyama zoo haven't a clue how to take care of their animals and it is shockingly clear that they are only there for the visitors to gawk at. Enclosures are painfully small so people have a better chance of spotting the animals they came to see.
Solitary animals such as the red pandas were kept together, several polar bears were kept in tiny areas where they could smell each other, social animals like the capybara were in a pair in a TINY cell with no real bedding or drinking water, the macquacs were a huge family but in a small enclosure... there was lots of pacing, the enclosures stunk and the chimpanzees were all balding. One had recently been in a fight and was still bleeding.
I am no expert but I have been to enough zoos and animal experiences to understand enough. These animals were miserable and sadly I have contributed by paying to see them.
Avoid at all costs.

Came via JR train to Asahikawa, a trip of more or less two hours (our mistake was we left late). We took a taxi from the train station to the zoo (would have been cheaper to take the bus, only about 490 yen each). Zoo closed early that day, 330pm. Temperature at the zoo was about 0.4 degrees C so be dressed for the cold of visiting in winter. There were penguins, deer, wolves, polar bear, brown bear, monkeys, the crane (symbol of Japan). Would have enjoyed more if we had come earlier. Last bus was at 4pm, good that we caught it as there were no other means of transport out after (as.we understood it). They had good ramen at the cafe.

We left Sapporo at 7:30 in the morning and arrived in Asahikawa in about 2 hours. From there, we changed to a bus and it took about 20 minutes. It's not that easy to get to. There are buses from Asahikawa Airport, but there are few air routes to Asahikawa Airport. During the summer vacation period, there is a direct bus from Asahikawa Airport to Asahiyama Zoo. The zoo is slightly sloped and there are three entrances, the main gate, the west gate, and the east gate, so you can go around the whole zoo from any entrance. The day we visited was early September, and the weather was comfortable even with short sleeves, but the animals seemed hot. They didn't come out of the shade much or were sleeping. Admission is free for junior high school students and younger. This time we traveled from Sapporo. If you purchase a round-trip bus ticket to Asahiyama Zoo, it will cost 5,200 yen, including the round-trip highway bus from Sapporo to Asahikawa, the admission fee, and the round-trip bus from Asahikawa Station to the zoo. If you take the train, it will be faster than the highway bus, but I think it will cost more than 6,000 yen.

Asahikawa Zoo puts tremendous thought and effort into its conservation efforts and educating visitors about the importance of living with nature. It’s not the biggest zoo, most certainly not he best funded (you won’t see giant pandas and other expensive animals here) but you could easily tell how much the zoo cares about the animals. From the handwritten signs to the regular talks throughout the day (in Japanese only), it continues to punch above its belt and being one of the most visited zoos in Japan. Visiting in the summer and winter is also a completely different experience.

A friend and I were drawn to this zoo in winter because of the diversity of animals, unique views and of course, the penguin parade. However what we found was that most of the animals had very little stimulation, little privacy from view, and were showing a lot of stereotypical (stressful) behaviours. The saddest part was seeing the majestic polar bear pacing back and forth, twisting its neck in the air out of pure boredom. I am not against the concept of zoos, but the zoo really needs to provide more forms of enrichment, proper hiding spaces (i.e. dens, trees) and more space for larger animals like bears and big cats. If you do go, please consider speaking to someone there about this!

Although this is not a large zoo, it packs a lot in to the space it has. The penguin walk was definitely the highlight. Make sure to get a good spot to see the penguins early as it was completely packed when we went. Another highlight was the Red Pandas, I had not really seen these at other Zoo's before.
One negative is that many of the animals appeared to not be happy. Especially the bears and big cats who were just walking in circles over and over. If you are sensitive to this kind of thing then you might want to skip this attraction.

You can not only observe a variety of animals, but also enjoy the changing seasons in the zoo. There are very few zoos where you can observe animals that are active, especially in snowy weather. This zoo will provide a valuable experience, especially in winter.
The animals on display are large, temperamental and rare, so you won't have many opportunities to directly interact with them. I think that's why that zoo is putting so much effort into those displays. It's not every day you get a chance to see the soles of a snow leopard's feet!
There are not just inorganic animal descriptions, but also homemade descriptions made by the keepers. Collaborative research reports with students from nearby universities are also displayed, giving you an insight into the hardships and view of life and death of raising these animals.
If you go to Asahikawa as a tourist, this is one of the places you must visit at least once!

Famous for their penguins coming out from the enclosure to walk around during winter. Unfortunately when we were there in beginning of December the activity have not started yet.
Zoo have variety of animals with the design of enclosure giving visitors very close proximity to the animal. Of course penguins were the main attraction but don’t missed out on other exhibitions as well. If you walk up the hill toward the back of zoo you get a good view of the surrounding area. Which was beautiful during the winter.
Zoo keepers are very helpful and will guide you to the exhibition that you enquired.

A small zoo that charges 1000 yen per adult ticket. Came in a Klook group day tour, and we are disappointed about the scale of the zoo.
We have seen better zoos elsewhere, such as Singapore’s Mandai Zoological Gardens, and this zoo pales in comparison in terms of the number of animals on display, and the animals appear to have limited enclosure to roam. All land animals have fenced around the enclosure and this make them appear more like “prisoners” than they already are. The famed penguins in the zoo are found in a rather small enclosure, and cannot accommodate many visitors to view them all at once.
The toilets in the zoo stink, and are amongst the dirtiest toilets in our 14-day trip in Hokkaido. Very limited number of cubicles in each toilet. Not good for large group tours.
We entered from the East Gate and walked one round and returned back to the East Gate. If your legs do not have the stamina, you may find it hard to walk up the stairs or climb the slope back to where you entered from.
The restaurant at the East Gate is average and can try the curry and rice, with Sapporo beer of course!

Any chance of seeing the penguin walk in mid December this year?
Written November 14, 2024
If we go around 21 to 30 nov 2023 will we be able to see penguin walk?
Written April 13, 2023
Penguin walk usually starts from end dec to mid mar every year when the snow settled.

It's one of the shows at Asahiyama Zoo. In the winter when it snowed, you might be able to see it.

Has the penguin walk begun for December 2019? I know it's decided by the thickness of the snow but does it differs day by day?

Seems it will start Dec. 28.
You can check their website, top page.
But the schedule may change depending on the weather. From Dec. 30-Jan. 1 the zoo is closed for year end/new year holiday.

How can I check on the penguin parade schedule for December 2019? When will it start?
Thanks

I looked at their website and their last year's newsletter and they say usually starting from mid December (when there is snow on the ground). They will announce the start of the penguin march event on their website. Once it starts, the event is held twice per day (11:00- and 14:30-). It was started as an exercise for the penguins.

How much is there to see indoors on a rainy day?? Thank you!

In addition to the above, you can spend ages just watching the hippos (if they are active).
Plenty of cover even for outdoor exhibits.
Written August 11, 2019
How long are the penguin parade arrange ? Because I will go on March and I worry that I may be not see it.😁
