Definitely a must-visit for all Asahikawa trips, so we planned for one too. It is just mins across the road from the JR main station. From history it was opened back in 1972 as Japan's first permanent pedestrian-only street. Extending more than km to the north it showcases all Asahikawa has to offer. From large-scale stores to the various specialty stores selling myriad ;beauty salons, drugs store and evening entertainment spots. In addition to shopping, visitors can also enjoy gourmet food with the F&B establishment,
Beside the many unique stores/shops there are also some fountains and bronze sculptures positioned along the long dori, including Tadayoshi Sato's "Young Woman,". For the comfort of all there are some benches and tables/chairs for the tired sole to rest, and chill!
A variety of events were held here throughout the year. We understand that During the Winter Festival, it is also the site of the World Ice Sculpture Competition, creating a romantic and fantastic scene.
It was not a packed scene as we walked through the long shopping street on a Tuesday morning about 1030am, in fact towards the end near Tokiwa Rotary and Toiwa Park, there are much less people and many shops appeared (permanently) closed. On our backtrack we even took a quick lunch at Natsu enroute back to JR sta.
Will be better if there are more people & activities to make the place more lively…

I wanna ask if it’s normal to be charged ~400Y cover charge to those Izakaya restaurants at Asahikawa Heiwa Street?
We r not Japanese, so we r not sure abt the rules. We checked 3 restaurants, and they charge around 400Y

We went in late Sept, the walking shopping park is dead after 7 pm only a stragglers people going to the restaurants. We went during day time again to check it out again hardly any people and the shops were closed. Very quiet place considered Asashikaw is the 2nd largest city in Hokkaido.

we stayed in asahikawa because we want to go to asahiyama zoo and kamui ski link. unfortunately the zoo is closed so for the first day our schedule is empty. Asahikawa city turn out to be a small quiet city in late dec and early jan. maybe because of that the city have a speaker that played music in their city street because without that the city really a quiet silent one. we really appreciate their idea to put a speaker and played many happy song. we first going to aeon mall. asahikawa city museum that turn out to be closed as well and finally we going to shooping district with a beautiful light decor on the garden. we spent time took a picture there and happy with the result.

The shopping street nothing much to shop. Many restaurants. Unable to get any toys for my kids. Only get to see a toy shop, boring toys, overprice. Apparels are boring, design not nice and overprice.

If you have nothing in mind to buy or shop, this will be just a usual walking street with modern building by the 2 sides. We only went into one building to look for a ABC-Mart to look for Nike running shoes which were at huge discount.

Nice street with lots of shops, cafes, restaurants & pubs. Cars can't go through so its great for a stroll & people watching. We bought some beers at the convenience store & just hung out watching the crowd come & go. Some public performances here & there. Part of it is alive till late.

So many stores and eateries. One can spend a whole day here if not careful. Lots of space and very clean. I only wish I read Japanese, so I can have a better idea of what they are selling. There seems to be lots of "drug store"-like stores that sells everything.

We might not be there at the right time. At 4pm, the street was almost empty, and many shops were either temporarily closed or not opened yet.

There is nothing very special about this street. It is just a normal shopping area with pedestrian walkway. A good place to walk around for 1-2 hrs if you have free time.
