Just a short walk from Zuiganji Temple towards the coast, this temple is famous for its gardens and for its matchmaking. It is the family temple of Masamune's grandson Mitsumune, and its mausoleum, Sankeiden, is designated as an important cultural property. There is a Western-style garden using roses associated with Hasekura Tsunenaga, and the contrast with the moss-covered Japanese garden is interesting, but it is unclear whether it is worth the 500 yen admission fee.

This temple is lesser famous than the next door Zuiganji temple with its beautiful painted sliding doors.
But, Entsuin temple has a very nice garden and the famous mausoleum of date Mitsumune which had been locked up for more than 300 years due to the Christian artifacts engraved in the young lords statue. During the Edo period Christians were being prosecuted by the ruling authorities and since the statue had these artifacts it was decided to hide it. It was on,y opened up again after World War II which is one of the main reason why it is being in such a good state.
The garden is also very calm and has been used many times by Japanese TV and movie firms as a Samurai scene in a movie.

I wasn't planning to go to this temple but saw it on the way to Matsushima Kaigan station and thought, why not?
I was glad I went. The place is bigger than I thought. There is a nice rock garden at the entrance, then the temple, some caves on the side, down to a rose garden, and a pond. It was very quiet - just what a Japanese garden should be.
I enjoyed my time there away from the crowds at Matsushima Pier.

It’s a rather small temple but well maintained and 300 yen are acceptable. Don’t miss the part behind the lake.

What an absolutely beautiful Temple and gardens and grave sites. The grounds and gardens give you such a peaceful place to walk and reflect and listen to the birds and the wind talking through the Maple trees. This place is perfect for those perfect pictures. A must visit.

My sister and I visited Entsuin twice, once at night and during the day. Both visits were worth it. There was a light-up event at night that highlighted beautiful autumn colors. The pond reflected trees around it like a mirror. This event is very popular, and it was too crowded for my taste, but it had an ambiance like a festival around the temple and enjoyable.
Out visit next day during the day was even better. I prefer more quiet meditating quality of temples, so with much fewer people around, we were able to admire beautiful garden of Entsuin. This is a place you really should see even if you only had a day in Matsushima.

When we went, there was a lady in a Kimono that gave us a free English guided tour.
There is so much that you would never know about the place.
The black "slate" stone path? That is from the Beach area and us also same stone used to make the ink stones you can buy.
The first seating area? That was used as a waiting area for the Lord to summon you.
The caves farther in? those were carved by the monks that lived there and now house the memorials of the Lords concubines.
The rose garden? That was due to the Pope giving the Lord a rose during his visit.
The first small building you come to? That is a shrine to the Lords son that died at 19, maybe poisoned.
So much to see and learn, heck the pond at the end is heart shaped...

This is a beautiful temple and garden. It's unusual because it contains a rose garden, a moss garden and a heart shaped pond. There are many maple trees which would make it a lovely sight in autumn. You can wander at your own leisure and take in the vistas. There's a green brochure in English at the ticket booth which is very interesting. I highly recommend it.
