this is a great way to kill some time in matsushima but it's not a must see... the best part is probably the beautiful, long red bridge. there are some nice photogenic spots located around the island but nothing really out of the ordinary.

It was a pleasant morning walk even though the the temp was about 1C! We thoroughly enjoyed the scenic nature. It helps that we are in our comfortable boots as some paths are abit hilly and rocky. Otherwise, even the elderly can stroll comfortably. There are a few nice romantic huts for rest and just enjoy the beautiful scenery of the sea and greenery.

Totally wonderful island. It looks filled with trees but it has a beautiful empty grass patch itself, and has patches of forest. There are places you can reach the water. We went in summer so you could visit after 5 pm for free and it was still bright and warm. Many Japanese knew and came after 5. Otherwise, come early and pay entrance fee of 200 yen. The bridge on its own is very beautiful.

Absolutely stunning.. Loved hiking around and going on its beaches to see the bay. I would suggest coming near sunset where the water reflects the bridge and island with nice warm colors

If one is not rushed for time, do spend some time strolling the island. There are pathways leading to lookout points and a beach.

As you walk deeper into the island, there are fewer people. Definitely a nice escape from the crowds at Matsushima Pier and Godaido Temple.

After paying 200Y each at a small shop (Cafe Bayland) on Matsushima, we crossed a scenic narrow red 252m-long bridge to get to Fukuurajima, then enjoyed a delightful walk around the islet. We had appreciated the seaview of the Bay from the Basho RIver Cruise earlier, and the walk on the elevated grounds of Fukuurajima offered quite a different visual experience of the Bay. One marvels at hundred year old pine trees and other flora on the islet. I enjoyed investigating the architecture of the small old temple... Highly recommendable to visitors of Matsushima Bay.

Be prepared to walk a couple of kilometres around this island which has lovely vistas you can take in. Accessed by a long red bridge, it offers a great exercise route or walking trail. The paths and stairs are generally good quality. There's an ice cream and drink shop about half way around as well as rest rooms. Also there are several picnic spots and a flat area for kids to run around on. We spent about 90 minutes wandering the paths and taking photos. You could easily extend or shorten this walk.

A complete circuit of the island with some stops for photos from the toll gate and back will take an hour. If you don’t have this time at least walk across the bridge and follow the road up to the left to one of the first viewpoints for one of the better views of the bay. The best views are from the very end of the island though. If you take the high road you’ll be in shade almost all the way. Terrific spot for picnics and the crowds taper off this far from wheeled transport.

The long red bridge stands out as you walk the shoreline by the jetty so it's only natural to go and have a look. A small fee paid in the cafe at the end of the bridge and then a few minutes later it's a different world. There are plenty of maps posted on the island with the walking routes and sites of interest. The paths are well made though steep in places, one or two are rough paths through the trees to viewing points but you can't get lost.
An hour or so will do to cover everything and it's nice to get away from everyone else for a bit of peace and quiet.
