Amazing mosaics

Whilst visiting Petra it's worth climbing up to the Byzantine church to see the mosaics, they are very well preserved and the patterns are beautiful.

Its OK but unimpressive compared to everything else around Petra, but there you go, everything cannot be outstanding.

jordan, although no longer a christian dominated country, has many churches belonging to various eras. petra has some of the oldest churches. the byzantine church is quite close to the great temple. it originally has a mosaic floor, which is now under preservation and reconstruction. the whole church is yet to be excavated. but it is worht a visit

Loved visiting this ancient and charmingly beautiful site. There is so much history and so much to absorb. Photos in this location are well worth the hike.

Do get yourself this far - easy walking and a rest stop with clean look and good cuppa not far away. Not many folk seem to make it this far

if you are there already, you should take the extra 20 minutes to see the Byzantine Church. The mosaics are amazingly well preserved.

The Byzantine church is located north of the Colonnade Street and east of the Winged temple. It was a large Christian church dating from the 6 Century AD. All that remains are the floors, half walls and architectural details. These include an amazing Roman mosaic floor with many different scenes as well as columns and other carvings. A little off... Another great site among many in Petra. How they managed to cut such designs out of the living rock is unbelieveable.

We were not expecting this inside the main site. The mosaics are still being worked on but the area is covered and allows some relief from the sun!!

On a hot day siting on the cool steps of the church away from the main track was a welcome break. What I really liked was how it still had the feel of a church and the visitors spoke in hushed tones - incredible for a ruin!
