This was an amazing experience and something out of this world. The Monetary is site of similar magnitude, size and beauty as the Treasury. Just different architectural style. The trial to the Monastery is 2.5km long and will require you to climb 850 steps -...More

850 steps can be hard on a hot day but the end result is fantastic...not just the superb Monastery but the views from the adjacent lookouts will stay with you for life.

I was planning to climb the steps to see but we were running short of time. If you are older, the climb can be difficult. I rode the donkey to reach the monastery as that was the only way I would make it.

An very beautiful gate. The walk to go is pretty long especially because it is made as stairs. The view on the way is amazing.

If you're going to do this, start early while you're fresh and full of energy. We walked "with purpose" through the Siq, past the Treasury, through the Street of Colonades -- which we toured the previous day -- and reached the Basin Restaurant in 30...More

You can take a donkey one way or both ways, but consider the donkey and that you would miss some great photo ops. To see this magnificent tomb in all of its original glory up close and personal is just fantastic. To look to the...More

Its a long walk up here. The park map says its only 1.6 miles to this place, but it took us a 45 minutes to get up there. It was worth the visit. But continue another 5 minutes to the look out point where some...More

It was totally worth the 2-day muscles pain after climbing to it! The site is breathtaking and beyond any picture of it.

Our tour guide warned anyone not in decent/good physical condition should not climb the 850+ stairs to the Monastery. He explained there are alternate ways to reach the site such as by donkey. We decided to climb. And boy did we climb. It was a very...More

How much time do you have? I ran up in about 20 minutes, but it wasn't easy :) ... it all depends on your physical shape - your twins will not walk up there. it's easy to figure it out: if you don't feel tired by the time... More
I will be visiting Petra in late March. I want to go up to the monastery but have somewhat limited mobility. Normal walking is okay but 800+ steps would be problematic. I am 75 and a polio survivor. For uneven stairs I use hiking poles as an aid. I'm thinking a donkey would be my best choice. How much time and approximate cost for a donkey ride up and down? Any advice at all would be appreciated.

I hate to disagree with Mr BobandSharon but using a donkey is not advisable up or down. It is very hard on the animals and it is not an easy ride because of the steep areas. If you are willing to take the time to go slowly... More
