Little Petra is worth a quick visit if you have the time - either the day before or day after the main Petra. If you're on a time limit, I'd suggest not.
That said, if you have half an hour to an hour the day before or after you go to Petra, then it is worth popping in to see a few of the caves here. These were used for ceremonies more so than tombs, and is evident that the Bedoin people have used these as living areas.
There's a view point towards the back of the canyon - up some steps.

Siq Al-Barid, more commonly known as Little Petra, is about ten minutes drive from Petra. The signage isn’t fabulous and we only found it because we spotted a tourist minivan and figured they were heading that way, too. Though I am sure we would have found it on our own, eventually.
Like Petra to get to the site through a narrow canyon, or siq, which opens up to buildings beautifully sculpted out of the red sandstone. Don’t even bother with a stroller here. The floor of the valley is thick with soft sand that even an SUV of a stroller might struggle with.
Little Petra is well worth a morning of scrambling about. Even, and I would argue especially, with a little. Because it is so narrow you can stick mostly to the shade. And because it is so small and contained you can let littles have highly controlled reign.
You’ll likely spend no more than an hour here.

I arrived in Little Petra after hiking from Dana Village and Sami Amarein and his family welcomed me in his Bedouin tent for a good price. I stayed here for 2 nights before heading to Petra. Sami gave me a wonderfull dinner, breakfast and tee everytime and an excellent tour in Little Petra. He also offered to guide me for the hike through the mountains to Petra, but unfortunately I had not enough time to do that.

This was an added bonus that wasn’t on my itinerary. My driver Jousaf suggested this stop since I didn’t spend too much time at Mount Nebu and Madaba so we stopped here at Little Petra.
This was a prelude for what's to come the next day. This site doesn't require an entrance fee and is less crowed, yet you get the same amazement with buildings carved into the walls of the sandstone canyons.
Try and squeeze this gem into your itinerary if possible. You won't be disappointed.

Our guide told us he is always bringing tourists to Little Petra first because if they see it after Petra, they are not impressed at all. I don’t agree. Little Petra is equally interesting as the main one. It is just more compact in terms of size.

Little Petra should be the first thing you do in Petra if you stay few enough days here.
It's s good introduction for Petra biggest site.
You can enjoy in one hour approximately or more if you do tours around, or go to Monastery temple on Petra from Little Petra. Different way and less people. Perfect location for first pics.
And you can meet nice Bedouin as Sami for guide you and explain things about history and location, Bedouin life and more. He does other tour too and has a so cute smile 😊😊
Contact by WhatsApp as every Jordan tourist guide here +962 7 7827 9237.
Thank you Sami and rake care, see you again!

If you’ve seen the Taj Mahal, you probably know that the ‘Little Taj’ is rather nicer and much quieter. The same applies here, Little Petra has some fine tombs and other ‘caves’ and is relatively quiet and much sandier.
Local Bedouin traders will negotiate prices (and they start lower than Petra), but it’s hard work.

The little Petra is super quiet compared to the other popular parts of the archeological site. No special monuments but the highlight was the painted Biclinium. But the deteriorated steps made it hard for some people to get there and see the paints. Nice view from the top of the staircase at the end of al Siq al barid.

This wonderful site is a must before you visit PETRA itself.
It truly is breathtaking giving you an insight into what to expect.
You don’t need a guide.
Just get out and walk, take it all in. You’ll need approx 30-45 minutes here or as long as you like if you want to grab a coffee and chat to a local.

We love this place especially for a short stopover with kids. It is a short walk from the entrance to the far top end where the view is breathtaking. Some good spots to have younger ones climb safely. You can certainly create a magical experience for them making up tales (or be rather accurate in history) as they walk in and out of small caves. An easy walk from/to some nearby Bedouin camps for an authentic overnight experience.

Hi Hannah.
I didn’t pay anything to get into Little. Petra but I did show my Jordan pass, although to be honest the guys at the entrance didn’t seem that interested.

Hi, We plan to go to Little Petra in early January 2018. Our plane arrives at Queen Alia Airport at 12:30 noon. We will pick up a rental car from the airport to drive to Little Petra directly. We estimate to get there around 4:00pm in the afternoon, would it be too late? Is there really an entrance gate to be locked at sunset at Little Petra? Thanks for any tip in advance!

4pm would be too late as it gets darker early in January. You may not be able to explore the area fully.

hello,
We are a group of four visiting Petra in October and would like to hire a guide to walk from Little Petra to Petra and hire a guide for Petra as well.
Can you/anybody provide recommendations for a suitable guide or how to engage a guide?

You don't need a guide for Little Petra it is only a couple of hundred metre long. There are locl guides just after the car park if you really want one. It is far to far to walk to Petra itself, took us 15 mins on the coach.
