Massive, Impressive
May 2021
We spent three hours touring all the museums and grounds. Only Albanian signage in the Armaments and Prison parts of the museum which made it tough for us to understand what we were seeing. The historical span of this structure is remarkable.

Nice hike up, beautiful views, first floor museum worth it
May 2021 • Couples
Recommend taking the hike up to the castle and walking around, then hanging out outside for a bit. We liked it a lot.
The views are wonderful, nice breeze. The walls of the castle are immense, a lot of arches.
Was an additional 200 lek per person for the 3 floors of museums. The first floor museum was very informative and well done and we spent time reading the info and looking at photos and quotes - enjoyed this; second floor nothing there; third floor-we’re not into weapons at all, but if you are, the third floor will be interesting.

Well preserved town
Apr 2021
The castle is at the top of the hill and we walked through the town to get to the entrance. it is a good hike to get to the castle. There are great views from the top and many of the points of interest have signs explaining the significance. The castle is well preserved but it feels like there is more that could be opened up.

Very insightful
Mar 2021
A fun day exploring 'Castle Gjirokastra' a 12th-century fortress, very insightful learning about the experiences of living in a communist country, and eerie wandering through the cells and of course more wonderful views of Drino valley.

There is also a weapons museum, where you can even pick them up! A wonderful experience for 400 Albania Lek (ALL) converts to approximately 3 EUR and worth the additional 200 (ALL) to explore the museums.

Gjirokastër Castle is a fortress in Gjirokastër, Albania (during Ottoman rule, it was historically known as Ergiri while local Greeks referred to it as Argyrokastro, a name also applied to the castle.

Gjirokastër Castle is situated at the height of 336m above sea level and under protection from UNESCO.

Excellent museums and views
Feb 2021
Take photos from below, from above, from every angle--you'll be happy you did. The museums are professionally done and very enjoyable. They close at 3 pm, be warned.

One of two most beautiful towns in Albania
Aug 2020
We've travelled entire Albania during our 2 week tour and two towns I can point out being the most beautiful are Berat and Gjirokaster.
Gjirokaster is only an hour drive from the seaside resorts of Saranda and Ksamil, and I'd suggest everyone holidaying there to make a day excursion.
Gjirokaster sits on slopes of Gjere mountains overlooking a huge valley. The Castle occupies a commanding position and is a beautiful site while approaching the town.
The fortress dates back to 12 c, modified and reshaped over the centuries. It's main feature, the clock tower was added in 1800's by Ottoman governor Ali Pasha Tepelena who's also responsible for a magnificent sea fortress at Porto Palermo north from Saranda on the Ionian coast (read that review).
The Castle houses a military museum consisting mostly of captured WWII Italian and German weapons and a US fighter plane from the cold war era (different versions on it), as well two Pasha tombs and some underground Ottoman era rooms.
However, most impressing are the views of the valley and old town below.
Like most such places in Albania entry fee is extremely cheap and there are good English explanations throughout the place.
