If you have time to take the journey, a must see is The Castle at Gjiorkaster, Albania. A magnificent structure preserving ancient history. There is nothing more to say...this is a top shelf example of ancient history right before your eyes.
Highly recommend...go and visit.

The castle itself is huge and still being renovated. Probably when those renovations end (sometime in the next 5-10 years), it will be much more impressive. But the views - they are amazing. On a clear day you can see and appreciate so much.

The castle is well worth a visit just for the view, The actual castle is very beautiful, also not much health and safety, so lots of fun to walk around, there is a great display of artillery guns when you enter, very impressive and also an old 1950 rusting fighter jet with an intriguing history. Follow the sign for the entrance and avoid our mistake of taking a short cut that failed. Very interesting place to visit

Very interesting place, with lots of history from different periods. The castle is impressively large and gives a really great view of the town below

We took our time visiting the castle as we spent a couple of days in Gjirokaster but it was worth the walk, especially the ‘captured US spy plane’. The castle is in pretty good shape considering its age, due to the ongoing renovations, which mean that you can’t get to every part of the structure. However, it’s certainly worth a couple of hours of your time and it very accessible from the old town.

This is an impressive castle on a fairly grand scale. Though you can’t walk end to end at the moment due to renovations, it’s 1km long.

It’s fairly well preserved and not just a few fallen down ruins. Lovely little chapel. There’s even a quirky “captured” American plane.

It was 200lek extra to do the museums and we didn’t bother.

Great views too.

Definitely worth the admission fee.
