Stunning landscape from horseback
May 2021 • Friends
Horsebackriding in the hills opposite to Gjirokaster was one of the highlights of my holidays in Albania. Being in group of 11, we did most of the ride in 2 smaller groups, each with a leader. It is a hilly terrain with several routes available. I had ridden a few times before, here I learned how to ride uphill on narrow paths. I loved going through flowering meadows and appreciated an open & supportive attitude allowing people to get more confident & comfortable.

Amazing horse riding at the sunset

Amazing horse riding just before the sunset! Kristina and her husband are very nice and easy going people and we really enjoyed spending time with them. All horses are happy, kind and beautiful. Overall, it was a very cool experience!

So perfect!

I was so impressed by the 3 hour trek we did at the weekend. Kristina was really easy to get in touch with and quick to reply, and booked us onto a group trek consisting of two novices and two intermediates. The horse are perfectly trained- we went up and down very steep slopes with loose stones and uneven footing and they handled it perfectly. Didn’t bat an eyelid when sheepdogs came barking at us, and were very safe and easy to control- we all cantered, including the novices who’d ridden just twice before. Would definitely come back again!

Awesome experience

I have been both on a one-week-trail to the sea and on a day ride- both were great.

Trails are organized in a way that you learn a lot about Albanian culture and you also meet some families who are very guest friendly and let you enjoy the trip even more. Nature is stunning- you experience many different landscapes during only one week. Horses (Albanian mountain horse breed) are friendly, surefooted and good in shape. And, also important: you get great food :)
Definitely one of my best trail experiences ever.

The day ride was together with a friend who is a beginning rider. He got a very relaxed and experienced horse and the trip and pace was chosen according to his abilities, so that he felt at ease and we both enjoyed the trip.

The team (Kristina, Aurel and Ilir)is very attentive, caring and also entertaining :)

You surely will have a good time there!

Superb scenery, challenging riding, fantastic people. Eco tourism at its best.

My 13-year-old daughter and I joined a week-long mountain trek on horseback in early April 2019. It was booked through Unicorn Travel in the U.K. who handled it all well. It has been one of the best holidays we've ever been on (and I've travelled widely). Albania is still unspoilt, scarred by communism but emerging from that era with some optimism and much pride. The caravan holiday team are totally dedicated to showing off their country to visitors, sharing their historical and political knowledge as well as leading progressive rides over the most amazing landscapes. You stay with Albanian families as you progress along the route, the horses bedding down in a nearby orchard or field. The food is amazing, the people so welcoming and sincere (despite not speaking any English) and the whole thing is held together expertly by Aurel, Kristina and Ilir who are so good to their guests. You need to be able to ride proficiently to do one of these treks. There is about 5 hours riding a day (18-28km per day), nearly all flat work is done at a canter with some quite challenging up and down steep slopes which the sure-footed ponies take in their stride but there were the odd moments when I decided that to look down might be foolish! I can not recommend this adventure highly enough. Learn a few basic words of Albanian for the homestay experience and go for it; such a fantastic experience.
