- JosephinxBrisbane, Australia41 contributionsTruly magical cultural and culinary experienceSimply one of our all time favourite experiences in Ubud. Ayu’s warm welcome with a refreshing drink and an explanation of the family compound, tradition and legacy was very insightful. What a privilege it was to share her family pavilion style home. If you’ve never experienced a place like this, you should go just for the Balinese indoor/outdoor pavilion architecture. Century old stonework, framing walkways between pavilions, all set in a magical secret garden. Ayu’s detailed cooking instructions made the experience enjoyable and accessible. The precision clockwork logistics in balancing cooking with resting and eating during the class, ensured everyone could fully participate without discomfort. Most importantly, savoring the dishes we prepared in the dining pavilion was an absolute delight—authentic Balinese food with fresh herbs, spices, vegetables and proteins. We highly recommend Ayu's cooking classes to anyone looking for a very authentic cultural and culinary experience.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 22, 2023

- Alison RIndonesia5 contributionsAuthentic cooking class & market tourThis is an authentic, Balinese cooking experience. We went to the produce markets and learned so much about the herbs, spices and vegetables. Then we learned & created 8 delicious meals including delicious peanut satay sauce, Gado Gado, soup, stew and salads. All of this in the beautiful home of Ayu & Made. Ayu’s cheeky sense of humour will delight you and draw you in to this unique culture. We were collected from our hotel in Ubud and dropped back with a recipe book, and we cooked a feast! We also got to visit a home and understand more about the culture. - Felice MMelbourne, Australia17 contributionsA relaxing informative and tasty morningA great experience.. We learned about life in a typical Bali family compound as well as a market trip to see where the food comes from. Our hostess was warm and entertaining. It's well done as some of the longer or more time consuming tasks are done for you so you just get to do the fun bits like grinding chopping cooking and eating the 7 dish meal.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 31, 2024

I went to visit Made for healing. It was an interesting experience. I couldn’t help but notice there were 3 puppies running around his home ( where he did his healing - so on his property)The mother of the puppies was drinking from a dried up water fountain and one of the three puppies vomited in front of me. This was just after the New Year, it was extremely hot and humid. When we arrived we were offered cold water from the fridge ( you can see the fridge from the waiting area) .
And all the dogs had no drinking bowl to drink from. I looked!
I asked Made wife who provide water to us ‘where do the dogs drink from) and she pointed to the dried up water fountain. I said it wasn’t clean or sufficient and the puppies couldn’t reach. She then offered a bowl of fresh water from the fridge for the puppies. Please can everyone help to educate so we can help theses innocent animals, when you visit Made please remind them their dogs are not just for publicity)m they have needs too and there is also a free desexing program in Ubud run by BAWA who will pick up the dogs desex for free and return the dogs back. Why isn’t this happening in Made spiritual sanctuary? He makes enough money $30 per person 😳🤔

Couldn’t recommend this experience more!!! We were picked up from our villa, and there was standstill traffic, our driver kindly called his family and they sent bikes to pick us up so we didn’t run later than we were! To top off the great start the cooking experience was amazing. Being welcomed into the family home and given an overview of Balinese culture made it feel extra special. Not to mention, the food we made we got to eat and it was delicious. I can’t fault it, thank you so much.

When we travel, we always like to take a cooking class to get to know the local cuisine a little better and more intensively. This was also the case on our Bali vacation this year.
In the morning, we met the husband of the future cook at the market and strolled through the various stalls. Past stalls with offerings, flowers and of course meat and vegetables. Of course, a few stalls where people were preparing their own food were also a must.
The whole thing took about an hour and it was time to head off to the cooking school.
After a short drive through Ubud, we parked in front of a fairly large house and were invited in. Since we had booked a "private cooking" session, we were able to demonstrate our cutting and stirring skills together with the landlady. To start with, we were given a refreshing drink and an excursion into the Balinese way of life. We learned why the houses are built the way they are. What the situation is with the oldest and youngest sons and much more. Enriched with this knowledge, we then went into a very large open kitchen. Here another helper came along who was to take care of the grilling and frying during the cooking adventure. In total, we cooked 7 dishes under supervision, which we were of course also able to taste afterwards. We didn't manage to make everything by far, but we tried plenty of each dish.
The recipe booklet was of course also there and we were also given tips on which vegetables we could use to prepare the dishes in Germany, as it will sometimes be difficult or even impossible to get all the original ingredients. We'll see what our Asian market has to offer.
The atmosphere during cooking was super relaxed and very funny, but it was in English, I would at least like to mention that.
We at least thought everything tasted very good and that's not self-praise.
So if you enjoy cooking and would like to try Balinese cuisine, you're definitely in good hands and very well looked after here. I can really only recommend it to everyone.

We had the best time at this cooking class! We were picked up from our Seminyak Hotel then treated to the local markets (only for locals) then taken to their house for the cooking class. We were welcomed warmly and given a cold drink on arrival. We were educated about the Balinese way of life, their culture and traditions. Our host
was funny and her English was very good. She made the entire experience an absolute pleasure. The cooking facilities were clean and modern however you are outside undercover and there was still a lot of tradition. So don’t expect stainless steel bench tops! We made 9 dishes and they were happy to accommodate to any health requests. This was a highlight of our trip! Completely worth doing!!!

We had a wonderful experience. We loved learning about the Balinese customs and traditions and then participated in an interactive, educational and fun cooking class. Afterwards we enjoyed the delicious meal. We happen to be vegetarian and they were very accommodating and kept meat/chicken/fish separate.

My girlfriend and I had the most amazing time at the cooking class.
After being picked up from our accomodation we enjoyed a walk through the local market.
Then we were taken to the our cooking class where we warmly met by Omang. What an absolute sweetheart she was! Her boyfriend and herself made us feel like we were with old friends.
The cooking class was excellent , the food was delicious. We especially enjoyed the sticky black and white pudding for dessert.
Would recommend this activity highly to anyone.

Absolutely amazing experience! Loved every moment of it. The lovely hosts made us feel very welcome and explained lots about the traditional Balinese culture as well as the meals we cooked and the ingredients we used. The meals were incredible and it was rewarding making everything from scratch. Definitely recommend this experience to everyone that wants to have a traditional Bali experience, it's totally worth it! We felt like we were part of the family. Thank you so much!

We are going to stay in Ubud downtown( near monkey forest sanctuary). Is there a pick-up service? And does it cost to be picked up?
Written September 29, 2019
Do they provide hotel transfers?

Were there many people attending the class?
Did you get to have a go at cooking all the dishes or was the class divided into groups and given separate tasks?
Many thanks!

HI! How long does the cooking experience take? Is there an afternoon and a morning session, I am just trying to plan it into my schedule.
Written August 25, 2015
Not sure if you have traveled to Bali already but it is very dependent on how many people in your class. I did this last week, just my friend and myself, and from the time they picked us up in town to when they dropped us back it was 3 hours. We did the afternoon class so there wasn't the market visit and the class was pretty quick as we knew all the ingredients being used (ie. she didn't have to explain them to us and we didn't really have many questions).
It is well worth the time if you can fit in into your schedule!!

Hi,
My name is Maarja and I would like to take part of the healing program by Made Lunas if possible. Do I have to sign up for that somewhere or what would be the possibilities to take part of the spiritual experience?
Thank you :)
Regards,
Maarja
Written January 7, 2015
No you don't have to sign up you can reach them through the FB or website page. You don't have to take part in the cooking class, I am heading back in July and will call in to see Master Made again. A taxi driver will take you and wait for you, maybe perhaps you can work something out with them through their page. Good luck sorry for the late reply.
