- Allison B1 contributionOur favorite place to find crystals! We love coming to Arkansas to find crystals. We’ve been to all of the mines, and honestly feel that our experiences at Wegner are always superior! We love the crystal forest when time is limited. The phantom mine is amazing! We went this month and found some truly beautiful points and clusters. Our guide, Lance, couldn’t have been more helpful and nice. He made a great trip even more memorable! Thank you, Lance!Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 30, 2023
- Expedition6565084 contributionsNice small crystals, easy for kids to find stuffFor the public dig, you will not be in the active pits. An excavator pulls the material out and they dump it into areas in the woods for you to dig through. This makes it easy for kids and those less inclined to hard labor to find stuff. You get two hours to dig on site. We found a decent amount of very clear single crystals but few intact clusters and nothing over 1.5 inch (diameter) due to the excavator destroying most of the material as it digs it up. It would be nice to dig in an undisturbed vein but you have to pay far more for a private dig. Overall it is a nice place for families and young kids to find some nice single crystals. The people are very friendly and make it a nice experience for younger ones. For a serious crystal hunter on a budget there are better mines for the money though.Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 7, 2023
- Discover193201509796 contributionsGreat fun by yourself or with a groupI had the best time going to the Crystal Forest Mine. Our driver, Doug, was very friendly, and knowledgeable. He showed me a good place to get started and helped by picking up a few as he can't across them. I stayed for 4 hours but would've stayed longer if the weather was better. I met some great people and can't wait to come back and try the Phantom Mine as well.Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten December 31, 2023
- Happiness426218254881 contributionAmazingVery pretty views up and down the mountain. The ride up was soooo much fun and our tour guide, Doug, was so sweet and funny. Made the experience even better than it was already. We dug out our own crystals, got a ton of really cool ones! Definitely worth the price, it's really cheap for what you get to do. We kept everything we found if we could carry it, one of them was just short of a foot long and half a food wide. 100% would recommend to anyone.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 7, 2024
- Michelle WackerHudson, Florida1,788 contributionsGet ready to leave with insane amounts of beautiful crystals.Doug, our guide took the time to show us the different parts of the mine and where different types of crystals could be found. One area had mostly clear beautiful points. Another area of tailings had great clusters. He was very kind and helpful. I also appreciated that he drove the truck slowly so our crystal’s would all be protected. I’ve been to several mines in Arkansas and it didn’t get better than this. No matter what you do you will leave with many pounds of quartz. The ladies who work in the crystal shop were also very sweet and answered all my questions. I’ll be back!!!Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten January 11, 2024

- Janice H1 contributionGreat family fun activityFun for the whole family! Get there early-when they open-to assure a spot in the truck to the digging site. The gift shop has the most beautiful crystals I’ve ever seen although they are not all native. The workers were very kind, especially Chris! He made sure we found a good spot to dig for our own crystals. Remember to bring gloves, buckets and tools as you will be digging for at least 2 hours.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 13, 2024
- Larry C75 contributionsGreat Adventure! We reserved a spot on the Phantom Mine trip and glad we did. They fill up fast, especially on the weekends. Prepare to ride in the back of an open bed truck on bench seats. It is quite a ride through the tall pines that takes nearly an hour. We had quite the adventure! Cannot say enough good things about the young man who took us up to the pit area. He was personality plus. Very knowledgeable and carried some pretty big rocks for us. Lance obviously enjoys what he does!! Found a few of the phantom crystals. Great experience for a couple of 70 year olds. Take hand digging tools, gloves, 5 gal. buckets for rocks and water. We could do this again!!Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 16, 2024

I only give one star because no star isn’t an option. I never go in and write reviews but am still upset! We traveled there from South Texas, staying in Hot Springs and the main thing I wanted to do was come here to shop and mine! I grew up with a geology teacher for a mother, which is who told me about the place, and was excited to go spend my one and only full day there at their place before having to head home. When my husband and I arrived we were impressed with the options just outside. When we went inside to shop and arrange to join the mining experience we were completely put off. As we walked in the older lady behind the counter didn’t even acknowledge us until I said something to her first. Then got a half hello and that’s it. I thought maybe she was just having a bad day. So I went on looking around. Maybe 30 seconds later an older couple walked in and they got a warm welcome and she asked how they were doing. I was a little annoyed but went on about my business. We found a piece of Labradorite that we wanted to purchase and it was 4.00 something a pound. Stood in line as she went through each little item of the person in front of us as she inspected things and took a little off the price for the lady, and weighed each little item. My husband and I then walked up.... she didn’t say anything to us... not like hey give me a second and I’ll be with you... nothing. Just stood in silence for a few minutes and then asked if we needed a price on it. We didn’t ask for a price, was just going to purchase the item. She then proceeded to punch a bunch in the calculator, never weighed the item and gave a ridiculous price of 160.00. Then turned and started doing something else. I was fuming at that point so we grabbed it and put it back and started trying to figure out how she came up with that! There’s no way that rock weighed over 25lbs! My husband carried it around for 20 minutes while we looked around. She never even weighed it! We left and went back to Hot Springs, wasted all that time and found the same rock, almost the same size for for 65.00 and it had more color to it!!
The only thing I could think of is that my husband has full sleeve tattoos on both arms and she just straight up judged us and assumed the worst! We had several hundred dollars I was prepared to spend there for myself and a gift for my mom and that’s how they treat people! Shame on you! Terrible customer service! Stop at one of the other places on the way in and save you some time! I’d imagine they treat paying customers better also!

Hi Stacie,
We are very sorry to hear about your experience. It is never our intention to make someone feel unwelcome, and we take your accusations seriously. We are a small business with an intimate group of employees that do a large variety of work, and occasionally on busy days we aren't able to great each customer with the attention and care that we would like. We are primarily a wholesale supplier with the majority of our store priced wholesale for other businesses to purchase. For retail purchases, we add a 33% markup. There are signs marked around the store stating this. Our best quality labradorite which is polished on both sides is $25.00 per pound wholesale. We also sell one-sided polished labradorite for $18.00 per pound wholesale. If the labradorite you selected was marked at a little over 4 pounds, and our best quality, this would have made it about $160.00 with taxes. To claim that we were discriminatory is incredibly disheartening. This employee is one of our most experienced. She has kind and professional mannerisms. Over our 41 years in business, this is the first time someone has insinuated prejudice. We offer an environment where everyone is welcome. This is substantiated by our customers over and over.

We did the tailings area first because we had a 4 and 6-year-old with us. The lady at the front was helpful and got us checked in and on our way. She made sure we knew where we were going and let us know there was no bathroom where we were going. We also did the sluice with the 16 gem bucket.
They had a ball at the tailings area and actually found a couple of small crystals. After 2 hours adults were ready to go, but kids wanted another 2 hours! I would recommend coming when they are first opened at the 2-hour mark it started to get busy. There was some shade early in the morning but was leaving quickly.
The sluice is a touristy thing! There were maybe four nice size crystals and what I would call microscopic tenny tiny specks of color. It took all of 30 seconds to pour the pail and wash away the sand. Pretty much a waste of money I think.
The prices on the pieces are per pound so it will add up quickly and they don't have any really small pieces they are all pretty good sizes!
Overall, the tailings were fun and this is what we drove 20 hours to do. The girls enjoyed themselves.

Hello! Thank you for your feedback. Our all-day tailings is a great option for families who want to spend the day playing around in the dirt. For more serious treasure hunters, we recommend our Crystal Forest Mine or the Phantom Mine. Our Sluice is a 100 ft long covered trough with running water to sift through your semi-precious gem buckets. All of our gemstone buckets are put together in house by us, and every stone listed on the description chart provided you are guaranteed to find. Our 10,000 square foot wholesale warehouse is open to visitors with large museum specimens available for viewing, however the prices listed are wholesale and we mark up items 33% for retail purchases. We are pleased to know the girls enjoyed their time. We hope you come back for another adventure soon.

Lovely area, but not a great mine for digging. There is a trailing but it is not well kept and is largely to keep kids digging in the dirt, you'll only find chips, shards, or VERY small (fingernail sized) crystals there. The mines themselves are groundlevel turns, not deep or rich, and all quite picked over. They very much look like Wegner turned over the top layers and then moved on. We found WAY more in the runoff zones than in the mines proper, and even then found very little of quality. We started in the trailings and moved to the mines. After our experiences elsewhere, Wegner was a big dissappointment. We are used to packing our car with findings. Of the three of us, we had less than one bucket of crystals to take home.
Watch your time as the truck rides back to the parking area don't call for individuals, you have to report to be taken back. There is a portapotty on site but bring your own water and snacks.
What I will say is a huge positive: the shop has outstanding prices on large crystals of good quality. I won't return to Wegner to dig, but I will come back every chance I get to buy crystals. It will be worth the trip out!

Hello Kimberly! We are sorry to hear you were disappointed in your digging experience. When it comes to digging crystals some days are better than others. We stock our all day tailings with fresh stock from our Phantom Mine weekly. The top layer always gets picked over quickly so we urge our diggers to move around often, in addition to overturning the tops of the tailings mounds to see what is packed down underneath. Our 40 acre crystal forest mine has lots of beautiful crystals to be found. The open pits are for experienced diggers only who know how to extract crystals carefully from the quartz veins. The runoff mine tailings surrounding the open pits are best treated much like our all day tailings in that moving around often and overturning the mounds lends the best results for surface mining. Having a keen eye for spotting the stones in the rich red clay helps and takes some getting used to. If you are having trouble finding crystals your guide who transports you to and from the mine is there to answer any questions you have. Everything at Wegner's is satisfaction guaranteed. If we had known at the time that your experience was not to your satisfaction, we would have remedied it in the moment. We appreciate you reaching out and hope you come back to see us again for another try.

Traveling to Mt Ida quartz mines from Dallas is a little far for a day trip, I recommend a stay over at a local hotel or nearby B&B.
On our last trip over the holiday Wegner's mine was closed, so we traveled a little farther and found another, and also drove by the free vista area (overcrowded).
The other mine we went to was nice, friendly, smaller scale, but if Wegner mine is closed, it is a close by choice.
In two hours walking prospecting and barely scratching the surface we found over a dozen decent quarter and half dollars sized clear points, and probably a few hundred smaller than a dime with a decent uncompromised point.
One could probably pick up several hundred decent pieces if they wanted.

Hello! Thank you for the review. We always recommend a minimum of two hours digging time either at our Tailings Area of one of our mines as it can take newbies a little bit to get the hang of spotting crystals in the soil. There are lots of beautiful crystals just sitting on the surface, but larger finds take quite a lot more work to uncover. Our mine sites we shuttle you back and forth from with a knowledgeable mine guide whom recommend you ask lots of questions! Our All Day Tailings Area you drive yourself to and are welcome to come and go all day as you please. We are happy to hear you enjoyed your dig and hope that you do indeed come back for another visit!

We visited Wegner Quartz Crystal Mines on a first time trip to Arkansas. We had no expectations at all and were not prepared but OMG. So much fun! We originally only planned to do a 2 hour dig but ended up staying to close (almost 5 hours). If we had the option to, we would have probably stayed longer. Our guide, Charlie, was so kind. It was pretty apparent that we had no idea what we were doing but he walked us through what kind of dirt and clay to look for to find crystals. Charlie made the entire experience well worth it! We learned so much from him. We enjoyed it so much that we came back a second time before heading home.
As of Dec. 2022, it’s about $20/per person for a 2 hour dig. They give you the option to stay longer if you’d like, which if you have the time, you probably will stay longer than 2 hours. You can bring your own tools or you can rent from their store. They also have buckets and gloves to buy. Gloves is a must as the crystal points are quite sharp. There are port a potty’s available. I highly recommend bringing toilet paper with you just to be safe.
We brought home 3 large buckets full of crystals. Highly recommend visiting ☺️

My husband and I had a wonderful day at Wegner’s Crystal Mine today! We came away with beautiful clear crystals, large and small matrixes of quartz and a bucket full of treasures. We especially enjoyed our guide, Charlie Ramsell, who was so friendly and upbeat. He even showed us areas where people were finding great crystals earlier in the day, and he pointed us to an area that had rich pockets of quartz. We enjoyed our visit so much, that we decided we will bring the grandkids back here for Spring Break in 2023. We highly suggest you spend time finding your own treasures there in their open mine - it’s only $19.95 per person!

My sister and I planned this trip to Arkansas because going to Crater of the Diamond State Park has always been on my bucket list, since I am a hard core rockhound. After going there the first day my advice is to skip that experience altogether and head over to Wegner Crystal Mine instead. The park is a waste of your money, a lot of hard work, time and effort for NO reward! It’s a waste of energy!
Our first day at Wegner we did the mine trip, and signed up for 4 hours, you can go for 2 hours but if you are serious about Rockhounding then you will need 4 hours. I think you can also go longer, but with the heat and our ages, we maxed out at 4 hours. It was a tremendous amount of fun! We both found an enormous load of beautiful crystals, in fact, together we filled a huge bucket.
We were told from their staff, (Haley was so gracious and helpful) that you can also go to a different mine they operate that has phantom crystals, so we signed up to go on that trip the next day. It was an outstanding experience! Our guide Mike was truly a joy and helpful and I cannot say enough great things about the adventure. Some suggestions if you go, and I strongly recommend this amazing place: wear rugged hiking boots, hat, bring a lot of fluids, food, and sunscreen. The 2 days we spent at Wegner’s mines was a highlight of the trip and of all my rockhounding adventures, which have been many!

Hello! Thank you for such a lovely review. Two days at the mines in the full summer heat is some serious digging! We are happy to hear you nabbed a decent haul for all that hard work. Your recommendations about what to wear and bring are spot on. We love hearing you enjoyed your excursions. We hope you come back soon - perhaps in the fall/spring with the cooler weather.

Enjoyed the shop and the variety of items available. Shopping here was a good stop after digging at another nearby mine where we were successful in finding crystals. You certainly appreciate buying them all cleaned up for a reasonable cost after going through lots of dirt :)

Hello! We appreciate the kind words. Primarily we are a wholesale supplier, so with a wide selection to choose from we try to be a "one stop shop" for other crystal sellers. We love hearing that you enjoyed perusing the shop and appreciated buying the crystals already cleaned. As you know, there's a lot of work that goes into getting them from the earth to the store shelves. We hope to see you back again!

I would've given 5 stars if they were better organized and had more staff. I called the week before and asked about reservations but I was told it wasn't necessary and to get there 20 minutes before the 9:30 mine tour. We arrived 20 minutes before and there was a line to check in. They had 2 trucks taking people up to the mine so it was about 10:30 before we were able to get on a truck. Your 2 hours doesn't start until you get up there so thats ok. We came back down around 12 :30 and a lot more people had arrived. We thought we could buy some things in their store but we were hungry and finally left about 1:45 to go get lunch. People were complaining they had been waiting since before noon to get on a truck. They had run out of tools and buckets too. We had planned to come back after lunch to buy some of their buckets of findings and use the sluice box but didn't want to stand in line for an hour. The mining experience was great. We found some awesome quartz and crystals. Just go early and bring your own buckets and tools. The staff are nice just totally unprepared for a crowd.

My husband and I are Rock hounds and LOVE mining our own. We will be in AR 1st week in April for our annual vacation for 3rd year in a row. We are looking for a mining area that will keep us digging all day long. We may spend 2 hours or 6 hours. We like bringing our own digging tools. How much can we expect to pay for an all-day digging excursion? Also, how many areas are there available to dig?

Hi Helen,
We have 3 digging options. The tailings, the Crystal Forest Mine and with reservations the Phantom Mine. The Crystal Forest Mine is $18 per person per trip witch lasts about 2.5-3 hours with travel time. You can dig at the tailings for $10.50 and the Phantom Mine is $40. The Phantom Mine is $40.00 and leaves at 9:45 and you will get back at 4:00. we have a Phantom Trip this Saturday the 6th. If you are interested please call 870-867-2309 to make a reservation.
Blessings,
The Wegner Crew
