The Jilava Fort 13's initially purpose was to defend the city of Bucharest, but after 1907 it was used as a prison (one of the worst in Romania). The conditions here were comparable to those of a concentration camp. The rooms here tell very traumatic and sad stories about prisoners who were deprived from food, rest and dignity. To get here is kind of complicated because the Fort is located inside the Jilava Prison so you normally need to call there to announce your visit. But there is a simplier method to visit, to get in touch with the FORTUL 13 JILAVA facebook page, who arrange guided trips at the Fort.

An interesting place. A good guide took us back in the comunist period and told us about the regime in comunist prisons. Easy to visit: contact Asociatia AIRDU facebook page admin and they ll arrange everything!

An amazing experience. On the site of a live prison lies the old Fort built in the 1800s to defend Bucharest and used as a prison until the late 20th Century. George, our tour guide walked us through the modern prison's security and took us through the fort's tunnel-like wings and corridors telling us about its often grisly history in a wonderfully warm and knowledgeable way which put us immediately at ease.
With many striking photo opportunities and incredible stories to tell, this is a hidden gem sure to make its mark on the tourist map in years to come.
