We decide to drive down the Carretera Austral a little further south with breathtaking views of the bright blue turquoise water of the Rio Baker with behind it snowy mountain peaks or deep green forests. A wonderful ride.

After an hour's drive, we reach the Chacabuco Valley and the Patagonia National Park (free entry). Here too we see beautiful panoramas, but also various groups of guanacos (nephews of the Peruvian lama) and majestic condors that slide with their large wings on the air thermics. Beautiful!

Puerto Chacabuco is an inlet of the Pacific Ocean surrounded by mountains, of rugged beauty. The place is actually a poret, including cruise ships. The town itself is only a couple of blocks and not much to see, however it sits in a strategic location point from where to go on several tours thorugh fiords to various places.

A nice trip but in comparison with what we had already enjoyed in the lake district part of Chile at Puerto Montt, this one fell a bit short in terms of scenery and visual impact. We enjoyed the Rio Simpson and the waterfalls but there was not much else. Chacabuco is not a scenic town and is very small. Glad to have done the visit and we met some lovely people but we were a bit spoilt with what we had sampled earlier in Chile.

We arrived as part of a cruise. the town looks desolate - the attraction is the Patagonia National Park and its stunning country side. You can take a taxi from the dock or book an excursion via the cruise line. The taxi was fine for us. We had an enjoyable few hours on our way to Antarctica

Not a huge amount to do in town, best to get about into the wild .

Fabulous scenery and well worth taking a trip. We were on a cruise a dat the dock were many taxis willing to take us around for 40 dollars - what a bargain! We hired a small minibus as there were 7 of us and had a lovely young guy who spoke very good English as our guide. A magical day.

This park tries to revive what Patagonia should have been like before humans came upon the land. A new concept for Chile
