A lot of souvenirs
Oct 2017 • Family
This place is amazing! Every time I go looks bigger and better. Big variety of souvenirs to buy and brin to those loved ones.
People around at the shops are very friendly and nice u can negotiate prices and get them for a lower price as advertise.
You can't miss this place if u go to Chillan.
You can walk around and find fruits, veggies and a lot of places to grab a bite.

I agree with previous contributors that the Mercado de Chillan is not what it used to be. Having said that I feel that it is still one of the best places to get souvenirs and taste typical southern food. However make sure you don't go to the restaurants via the meat market area, as if you are not used to or familiar with South Americas meat markets you will probably be nauseated by the smell.

Fun To Explore
Jan 2016 • Couples
We had a fun time exploring the local merchants and seeing the different goods for sale. My wife was especially excited when she saw a wheelbarrow full of cilantro. She had never seen so much at one time...and since she loves cilantro she took photos to share. We picked up some nice souvenirs from out trip here. Since there is a nice selection to pick from it took some time. My wife loves to shop so we canvassed every corner of the market. Over all a fun place to check out and experience the culture.

Interesting place

I consider myself a market-lover, every city I visit I must go to see its market. I had higher expectations for Chillan market. However it is actually a great place to get vegetables and fruits and the famous longaniza made by local producers. It is very clasic , tidy and clean. There are also around small places to have huge and cheap meals.

OK For the local experience

It's a traditional market with a flavor of the local culture and customs. If you're looking to get in touch with what is truly from origin I believe this is a place to visit. The 'Longanizas' are known countrywide and good if you feel like tasting something new and tasty (not for the soft-of-stomach though).

Disappointing

It is celebrated and when I went there ten years ago it seemed really rather good but this last time I was not so thrilled - maybe I am getting blasé about South American craft goods, and in some places - not here - things one used to get have vanished. It has all the usual stuff, it is nicely laid out and the interior market has the usual, cheap and good mini restaurants. If you want to buy spices and the like, fair enough, and language is not a problem - these people know how to sell. But in a way I had as much fun going round the El Roble shopping centre which is close by and, the food stuff apart in the market, is where you find the Chileans and not tourists like yourself. There is nothing wrong with it, but I feel the same about the ones in La Serena and to a lesser extent in Valdivia.

Great market and lots of fun

We were able to walk to this market from our hotel. It was a very large market that offered everything (and I mean everything) from chicken feet to zippers. We were able to purchase some spices that had been recommended to us when we took our Chilean cooking class. Even though we are not fluent in Spanish, the merchants were helpful and very open to our taking pictures.
It was a fun attraction.
