the owners are so nice. we took my granddaughter, on her birthday. they were so kind and let her pick a small crystal, as a gift. in a nutshell, orville takes you into the woods, shows you what to look for and leaves. but, not before he tells you everything you need to know about searching for crystals. and tells you some facts about his interesting life. he is a great host. this is surface, i guess, mining. you set your pace and dig as much as you want. i would recommend this place for everyone.

We had a good time for almost three hours digging for crystals. This is not a field of tailings. They actually take you up on their property in the woods to dig in the hills for crystals. The people were really nice and quirky! The gentleman who showed us around told us some great stories and the boys enjoyed him. They treated us wonderfully and let us dig even though they were technically not planning on opening today. It is not a commercial tourist trap. It was a much more authentic experience like hunting for crystals in the Arkansas hills as a kid. You may not find large crystals but we found some pretty little clusters and lots of pretty quartz. If you take a picnic lunch there are some picnic tables where you could stop and eat lunch. Overall it was fun!

Hi Kathrine, and thank you so much for taking the time to review us! We are happy you enjoyed are all natural mining, or rockhounding, experience! You are correct, we do not have tailings as we do not use heavy equipment to dig big holes in the earth and dump piles of dirt. The experience is all natural, and we are happy to know you had a nice visit! Enjoy your crystals and please come again! Cheryl and Orville

We decided to make a side trip on our way to visit family in Texas. Board Camp Crystal Mine did not disappoint! From the warm welcome,to Mr. Orville's jokes and Miss Cheryl's interactions with the kids, you can't ask for more. Mr. Orville brought us to a good dig spot, showed us what clues to look for, got us started digging and made sure we were finding crystals. He also gave good education on how the crystals are formed and make their way up, to be found. The price is worth it (kids under 16 dig free). We dug a very small area and left with a full, huge bucket of crystals. Can't wait to get them all cleaned up! We would definitely return :)

My daughters and I stumbled across this gem while looking for something to do. The price is reasonable and getting to rent tools vs. purchasing them reeled me in.

Immediately, we were greeted by name and felt very welcome.

We dug around for several hours, found great rocks and made new friends. The area is beautiful and my girls and I will go back.

Bring water, snacks, and bug spray. I suggest your kiddos visit the toilet at the welcome before entering the mine. Bring towels for your car and a container to take your treasures home!

An amazing experience for adults and kids! My 3 & 5 year olds loved digging and actually finding crystals almost immediately, they were so excited! Orville and Rick were absolutely phenomenal about teaching everyone what to look for, and actually making sure we were finding crystals. ( instead of just letting us wander around and dig holes aimlessly like every other place) Everyone was so kind and genuinely wanted to ensure that we had a great experience. I loved the fact that they practice sustainable mining, and also have the grounds blessed - Orville truly cares about his customers and the impact to the environment. They take the time to dig right along with you! We met and visited with so many nice people, and ended up digging alongside strangers who became friends each day! it was such a refreshing and wonderful experience, and by far the best vacation I have ever had.
I had such an amazing time, that I ended up going back and spending the entire day a total of 4 times during our vacation - and leaving with more beautiful rocks and crystals than I know what to do with! I am addicted now! I can't wait to go back, it is an absolute must do experience if you have the opportunity! I haven't been home long enough to clean all of my tubs of crystals, but will update with pictures if I am able!

Cheryl and Orville are such genuine people! Orville was in the dirt digging and helping everyone in their efforts to walk away with memories and treasures. We left with amazing finds that will be cherished forever. This land is blessed by indigenous friends and feels very different than other sites in the area. (

The evening tour (Expedition Unknown) offers a very intimate experience to the phenomen that the land/area and personal experiences of Cheryl and Orville. We saw/experienced this first hand!

The cost was $35 for the first bucket and $10 for additional buckets. I filled 2 buckets which weighed about 100 pounds. I hoped to find an abundance of clear, faceted rocks but that was not to be. Of the 100 pounds I found, maybe 10-12 pounds had some amount of clear facets. Most were small, less than an inch. There were 4 decent sized pieces that are nice. All the rest were milky with streaks of black or red. The owners were friendly. The "mine" was digging in a wooded area that was mostly dirt and some mud. Finding the quartz required a lot of digging and work. I dug 4 hours and was very tired. I'm pleased overall but temper your expectations about find a lot of clear quartz.

Hi David! Thanks so much for taking the time to review us! We appreciate your honest review and happy to know that you were pleased overall at your experience! Digging directly in the earth is called a surface mine, and yes, you dig in the dirt, of course, as well as if it rained a day previous to your visit, there will be some muddy areas. We compare the experience to fishing. You never know what you're going to catch but you will catch "something". :) Thanks again, and enjoy your crystals! Cheryl and Orville

Board Camp Crystal Mine was such an amazing experience. The owners were super helpful in showing us where to dig and what to look for. We found a ton of beautiful crystals and some really cool limestone. I would highly recommend this place for everyone and anyone, our 8 year old had a blast and was able to find crystals all on her own. Definitely the highlight of our time in Arkansas.

My mom and I visited Board Camp Crystal Mine on May 29. This was our first visit and first time to dig for crystals. The owners, Orville and Cheryl Murphy, are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. After Cheryl checked us in and went over the rules and regulations, Orville explained the process and what to look for. Then, he actually helped us locate and dig for crystals once we got to the mine. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in nature and the hands-on crystal digging experience as well as the stories Orville shared. This was definitely a memorable and fun experience, and we would absolutely return to do it again.

We went here with our kids that were excited to dig for crystals. We all ended up loving it. Cheryl and Orville were amazing and he really has the kids enthralled and ready to dig. The kids had a blast digging and we had planned to stay only a couple of hours. We booked a 9am slot and stayed until 1:30, but it was so worth it and the kids are begging to go back. The place has a calming feeling over it and it’s truly magical. We cannot wait to go back next year. We have just slowly started cleaning our finds but are excited with what we’ve cleaned so far. We have a 5 gallon bucket and one small boulder to go.
