Before traveling to Oaxaca, Mexico, I did a little research into interesting places to visit in and near Oaxaca. Tlacolula came up in my searches, especially "The Chapel of Silver."
It turns out that the Chapel of Señor de Tlacolula or Chapel of Silver as us "gringos" call it, is located in the Church of Asuncion de Nuestra Señora in Tlacolula, Oaxaca, Mexico. When I first walked in I almost left because it looked nothing like the pictures I had seen, but the Chapel of Silver is a side chapel to the right of the main altar.
I am noe very interested in reading about this churches history, as I am having a little difficulty understanding just how the "silver" designation came to be.
The altar pieces, lamps, censers, etc. are all solid silver, but the majority of the room is gilt in gold. I will say against the stark white walls, when the sun hits it just so, the room does give a silvery appearance.
Although small compared to the basillica and catherdral, this is a very active church. Several people were worshiping and praying aloud to Mother Mary.
If you choose to visit, be very respectful as the locals pray here often. Everyone I encountered seemed accepting of the fact that I was just another "gringo" wanting pictures of their church. To me it felt as if they were taking pride in the fact that I traveled a great distance to see their church. And of course, I did.
The wood carvings were exceptional and the frescos beautiful. Although not as ornate as I expected, it was a great sight to behold.
Definitely worth the trip tp Tlacolula, which by the way is 20 pesos via a taxi each way. So the entire tirp from Oaxaca cost less than $3 USD and a few hours of my time. And I get to keep the memories forever.
As much as I enjoyed the visit, I would not recommend to anyone who does not truly love the ornate richness of a religous sanctuary. There are quite a few churches, cathedrals and basillicas in Oaxaca that are much more grand. So if you are looking for that grand statement of a church, stay in Oaxaca. If you enjoy the sense of peace associated with smaller churches, then this is the place for you.
My final note is the Chapel of Silver was a great place to visit. I am so glad I took the time to go.

You will not miss this is you are visiting Mercado Tlacolula. The chapel is free for all to visit, there will be a lot of vendors selling cheap flowers and souvenirs for you to offer praying to god. All of them are very reasonable prices. I highly recommend you to make a trip while you are visiting the market.

This is worth seeing ( and especially if you go on a market day- (omg) The chapel is far more gilded than the church and it is full of indigenous people who have adopted Christianity waiting to be blessed. An ancient ritual: being touched by the flower at an altar and having one's head rubbed with the flower and hands of a priest- people were lined up for it. A dark set of statues- martyrs - one with a hatchet in his head and knife in his heart- several holding their heads. Not for children I think..

We were amazed by the interior of this church from the 1500's and the quality of the interior. The silver was everywhere from the chandilers, to the wall sconces, to the alter. A must see for history buffs!

The towns Santo Patron (towns saint) El Señor De Tlacolula is an amazing church with lots of history and culture. Many locals and surrounding towns come to pay its respects to this remarkable saint. In the month of October (second Sunday) the town celebrates the saint in a week long celebration.
