- loic cPune, India20 contributionsGood for a beach breakA long Beach of around 8 km. There is a many tourist indian and foreigners but as the beach is long it is not really a problem. The beach is clean but do not expect blue lagoon without any garbage on the beach. There was some current and waves it remain manageable for adults comfortable with water but maybe that for young children it could be risky. There is only few restaurants near by most of people have dinner on their homestay. You should come for the beach because there is nothing else to do (else you have to travel to alleppey 30 min or kochi 1h30).Visited December 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten December 31, 2022
- Big Indian ToursKochi (Cochin), India249 contributionsMarari Beach/ Mararikulam BeachMarari Beach is the best beach in Alleppey. A true beach feel with the coconut trees around there and relaxing chairs. Stunning view of the sea, much more beautiful than the Alleppey beach with clean blue waters. Neat and well-maintained beach, one can enjoy both sunrise and sunset views. If you need relaxing chairs there you need to pay. We can even get into water up to some extent as waves are not that high. It is peaceful and less crowded, providing an ideal spot to enjoy nature and take long walks. Even with a lot of people, you won't feel it to be crowded as there are no fun activities being done here and mostly it's not crowded. Nearby shops offer snacks, ice cream, and other essentials, adding convenience to your beach visit. The beach is clean, making it suitable for a comfortable day out. Resorts and homestays nearby offer a convenient stay for those looking to extend their visit. You can find a few sunbeds available here, and beach umbrellas and chairs are available for rent at an hourly rate of INR 100. While situated in Cherthala, it is around 15 kilometres from Alleppey, providing an accessible option for those in the area.Visited November 2023Traveled soloWritten November 4, 2023

Marari has a long, nice beach. It's not touristic like Goa for example and has only a few small Restaurants and no Souvenir Shops or the like. The colourful fishing boats are a beautiful photo motif.
For sunset many local families arrive at the beach, Kids are flying their kites and everybody is enjoying themselves. Unfortunately people do not take care of the waste they leave behind which is why there is quite a lot of plastic and other rubbish lying around. That's really too bad and unnecessary.

If your seaside holidays have to include swimming or snorkelling, this will to be for you but if you are happy with a beautiful stretch of sand and low-key beach cafes to sit in and watch the sea, sunset, local fishermen ... you should love this. If only the currents were not so dangerous and the sand so steeply shelving into rough waves it would be perfect.

This is more family friendly beach as compare to Varkala beach. Homestays by the beach, good food. But, in the weekend the place is crowded and there's no proper parking space so vehicles were lined on the side of the road before reaching the beach.

Very drooling leachy guys running cloud 9 cafe in unprofessional way. Beach nice enough but full of westerners which seemed odd. I'd rather mix with Indian tourists as well.

This beach has been totally ruined by ignoance and neglect. It is covered in rubbish which is never collected. The local Fisherman just poo in the sand and wash themselves in the sea after. You cannot walk any where along it's length without having to avoid the varying levels of mess. A real shame as this should be a jewel in Kerals bank.

This is a massive long Sandy beach with good swimming and development at the northern end slowly edging south BUT it is (like a lot of India) covered with rubbish with just keeps accumulating. Nothing new in that you say ....... Yes but this is the first beach I have been on in India or anywhere where there are dozens of people crapping on the beach - every morning.
I can cope and accept that there is rubbish washed up, or left behind, on a busy beach ...... but dozens of people digging an open hole and having a crap every morning is disgusting.
If India can afford a space programme and the worlds 6th biggest Navy ..... its Government can afford to put basic sanitation into a primary tourist destination.
If it was not such a stunning beach it would have scored lower!

I have traveled the world and the Marari Beach is below average. Starting w the positives. The staff is quite nice, particularly the restaurant team. The rooms are comfortable and spacious. The food at the restaurant was also good. The negatives: The hotel maintenance is very bad, especially the lawn, pathways and room bathroom. The Wi-Fi is extremely slow, it simply doesn’t work. The hotel distribution couldn’t been worst, where the beach is far from the rooms, pool and restaurant. You end up not using the beach at all. Plus the beach is dirty and the local fishermen defecate on the sand, which is washed out into the water. This is right where you would be swimming. This is discussing and probably a health safety.

After seeing the Chavakkad and Alleppey beaches, we were in 2 minds as to whether we wanted a 3rd one. We are glad that we went over to spend some time at a clean bech that was not crowded. Spent a quality time of over an hour just looking at the sea and the people who had got into the water

I personally would not swim in the beach as I do not find the waters clean. However the hotel has a wonderful salt water pool which you will enjoy and be comfortable wearing bikini of your choice.

Hola.
Is this a nude beach ?
You can get nude when it's dark. Best is after 7pm. Go to the north or south end. Water is warm. If you are lucky you can meet other nudist too. After sunset there is hardly anyone and going nude is possible.

The plastic waste is coming from ocean or its the locals dumping it.

Much of it seems to be ocean plastic as it is highly degraded. The hotels nearby seem to be doing a fairly good job of cleaning up any local waste.

ofcourse you can, you must be mindful, Feb is peak tourist season, so availability of a pool villa may become an issue, unless you book in advance. Many good hotels have private beaches which you may want to consider as well. Regarding hotel tariffs, please check hotels section under Mararikulam. Hope this answers your query.

Hi
Marari Beach is very low key for tourists. Nothing like Kovalam – which in my opinion is a good thing! There are a handful of small beach shacks at one end selling things like fresh green coconuts and chai lattes and a few children’s plastic bucket-and-spades type items. Possibly a couple of street-food stalls but I’m afraid I can’t be certain, as we ate at our homestay villa every night. Definitely no beach bars/restaurants selling food or alcohol, such as you’d find on Goan beaches.
You can buy alcohol from government run shops - there is one in the village - and this is an experience in itself! Supply is limited per person, but enough to see most people through an evening. 3* plus resorts are allowed to sell alcohol in their bars and restaurants.
The beach is just stunning, with a long stretch of soft sand, beautiful sunsets, and quite high surf (whilst we were there, anyway.) Also fishing boats. The atmosphere is very relaxed, with a fair number of larger (expensive) hotels with gardens fronting the beach and lots of homestays around the pretty and sprawling village of Mararikulem and shops selling most things, including snack food but no cafes or restaurants.
We stayed at Mayas Boutique Beach Villas for 11 nights and I’d thoroughly recommend both the villa and Marari Beach as a place to chill. It has the feel of a real village, is very laid back and friendly. Maya cooked for us every night and her food was superb! Genuine, home-cooked and from the heart. I believe you can dine at other hotels but we chose not to, as Maya's food would have been hard to top. If you don’t stay at Mayas, if you enquire beforehand, they will accept dinner guests if they have the space. It's a small place with just 5 villas and a gorgeous garden, about 100 metres from the beach.
I’ve stayed in Kovalam, Varkala, and Poovar previously. In my opinion, Marari Beach is by far the nicest. I’d go back in a heartbeat!
Hope this helps a little. Enjoy your trip.
